8 Ball, Ashley's, and the Bier Garden...in college we went to Good Time Charley's(ie's) a lot.  Old German is good when the town is full of people...

Zion and Arches

My experience with National Parks is limited and I imagine they are all worth going to as every single one I've been to is great.  I highly recommend southern Utah.  Particularly the San Rafael National Recreation Area, the Wedge Overlook is a place you can camp right next to a canyson called the Little Grand Canyon, it's free, it's not crowded, and it's spectacular.  Arches is cool, Zion is cooler, anything around there is great.  I'll be canoeing down the Colorado River in that area in June this year and can't wait.  The parks out west are a revelation if you've never left the greenery east of the Mississippi.

Yosemite, Yellowstone, and Isle Royale are on my must do list.  Isle Royale next summer!

Nope

"My brother is accountable and so this guy and all mentally ill people should be too" is just an outrageous hot take.

Unless you're a psychiatrist who treats him you don't know what is best for him.  There are plenty of mental conditions that make it impossible for the person to be accountable, especially paranoia.  Like.  Legally unaccountable, which is an incredibly high standard.

Hope UM Hoops sticks around

I really like the content and have ponied up for the subscription.  Guess it's just hard to get a following comparable to the JUGGERNAUGHT that is mgoblog.

Because It's a Beileinism?

I think it's a nod to a Beileinism?

A biscuit (according to Coach Beilein and only Coach Beilein) is some kind of specific way to pivot.  His goofball terms are part of his G-Rated charm!

When I Was Born

Since before I was born.  I've been a fan and going to Michigan games since before I can remember.

My parents met at Mosher Jordan, grandparents met at U of M.  Both sides of the family are major U of M fans and most are alums.  About half of my cousins on each side went to UM, GO BLUE!

Not what I expected

I'm sure this is all very good analysis and interesting and so on but...

I clicked because I was though I was going to see a hypothetical Celebrity Death Match Coaches Royal Rumble.

Let’s just remember That John Beilein is an asshole who can’t recruit or coach and THE SKY IS FALLING WE LOST TO OHIO STATE AND NOW THIS!?!?!?!? Wait. I turned it off before the game was over...we forced OT and won?!?! Hail Beilein! But the post-OSU game bitches about Beilein and the need for “scrappiness!” and the desire to “Want it!” were not hysterical at all!
Yeah!

A comment on anonymous posting is basically an elitist, subversive attack on net neutrality!

Hold the Door?

Harbaugh's GoT character is clearly Stannis...Harbaugh is a happier, more intense Stannis.

Fair Enough

There are plenty of good reasons to be in favor of a stadium at the FailJail.  And yeah I think all things considered, it's a pretty decent deal.

Mostly I was really put off by the guy I replied to...there are good reasons to be skeptical of both the stadium deal, and Dan Gilbert.  Stadium subsidies are the rule, not the exception so it's reasonable to think GiIbert is going to get paid.  I get annoyed by both how much some people love Dan Gilbert and also how much he's hated.  He's a good businessman trying to make money, not trying to save the downtrodden in Detroit.  He's not a saint and he's not some cartoon villain either.  So going off on someone who is skeptical like that is pretty petty and, to me, doesn't show much thought beyond a kneejerk dislike to a certain type of person.

Harsh Bro

I guess you could assume the commenter is a NIMBY Gilbert hater, you could also say he's against stadium subsidies.

At the moment this looks like a stadium subsidy, if a pretty decent overall deal compared to say, Little Caesars.

An added cost that isn't being considered is that Wayne County would have to transport the prisoners to court, which is right across the street from the FailJail, so despite gross incompetence or corruption...that location may Still be the best place to have the jail.

But

Second level professional sports teams don't have huge alumni fanbases.  There's a lot of pearl clutching about pro sports and amateurism but I don't see how that affects what most alum fans like me love about the game, tailgating and mobbing to the big game with my friends.  That will always remain so long as there are college sports.

This is already about money (I saw no amateurism talk in that article lol) and I agree that the next phase of realignment may be the harbringer of the end of football amateurism.  The big schools should leave the NCAA and form their own conferences/organization that pay athletes right now, but the next money grab may be what does it.  Then we can turn on the MONEY CANNON AND WIN FOREVER...or do just fine with Harbaugh however it works out.

I'm Anonymous!

To be fair

I doubt the author's "agenda" is anti-Michigan specifically, and is more general in a pro pay the athletes and anti NCAA, anti high coach salaries (because the money has to go somewhere if it's not the players) sort of way

I wonder if they FOIA'd a bunch of coaches but didn't find anything, so they just put up a post about Harbaugh since he's more likely to get a bunch of clicks?

Suprised by the number of DCFC Fan Haters

I've lived in the burbs and the city, and I gotta say, everyone should hate those pretentious faux gritty hipsters who love their gritty city that they recently moved to...but I reallllly can't stand that mouthbreathing suburnite who considers a pregaming at Hockeytown before a Tigers game and then going to the casino the full Detroit experience and WAITS FOR A HALF HOUR AT THE LAFAYETTE EXIT INSTEAD OF TWO SECONDS AT THE JEFFERSON EXIT THAT IS LITERALLY A TWO BLOCK DIFFERENCE to get there.  Of course, most people fall somewhere between and are just fine.

I went to a couple of DCFC games when I lived in Detroit for grad school.  They were still playing at Cass Tech (silly fans thought the city meter readers wouldn't stick it to them for parking in handicapped spaces smh) so I can't speak to how they are in Hamtramck, but I thought it was a lot of fun.  There was definitely a hipster vibe, but I thought everyone was friendly.  There are some wannabe hooligans but I don't see anything that bad about the fans.  The level of play is not good so the antics of the super fan weirdos was part of what made it fun.  I also liked that there was kind of a neighborhood vibe.  I usually saw a couple of people I knew from school or around town at the game which was cool.

Brian's right, DCFC and an MLS team are not mutually exclusive.  I wouldn't mind Detroit having an MLS team but I don't like that Gilbert is pretty much guaranteed going to rip the city off by getting all kinds of money and tax breaks the city shouldn't give for the stadium just like the owners did for Ford Field, and Comerica, and Little Caesars.

That's not necessarily why

he didn't like trick plays.  Trick plays tend to be high risk/high reward.  If you're risk averse, a reverse can be...I had something for this that rhymed...a hearse?...adverse?...you get the idea.

Highly Recommend that y'all

 Reading through the lawsuit:

It is quintessential archaic, esoteric legalese.  It's got it all:

  • Lengthy Quotations rather than "Scare Quotes":  The NCAA operate pursuant to a set of "Bylaws" and Northwestern falsified "internship" timecards.
  • Incomprehensible Metaphors:  "The shot clock on Johnnie's limited eligibility window ticks down"
  • Quotes witty insults: "he 'sucked'"
  • Cites vaunted ancient texts: "accompanied by a handwritten post-it note"
  • Veiled insults: "a dumb reason"
  • Obsure Latin Rules: "General Rule"

In all seriousness this is good stuff.  Northwestern really boned him.  The lawsuit lays out the law, says why Johnnie got screwed, and does it all in an accessible way.

I wrote Amy King Size

Mary Janes are the WORST

I took the survey just to say so.  I'll say it again.  Mary Janes are the WORST.

Yep, this is how to do it

Don't question the UM fan, troll Sparty!

A+ Trolling

All embedded media are excellent concrete examples of expert trolling...though not excellent examples of concrete.

Yep

Dizzy diagnosed the mgoblog community correctly.  I approve of good MgoGrammar but there are some pretty damn nitpicky and smug comments and threads.  This thread proves him right.

Jail food?!?!

Man I LOVED the dorm food, especially the breakfast.  Omlette bar, all the cereal, but really, how can you not love waffles with block M's on them?!?!

I never understood people complaining about the dorm food.  There is always something you can make for yourself and I usually really liked the hot meals they made.  And you can eat pretty much whenever you want without having to cook.  I want to eat dorm food right now.

If not for rematch

I'd be fully for an OSU loss.  Would rather see Nebraska.  I want us to beat EVERYONE!

That's minor though.  I still want OSU to lose.

Hmmmmm

Probably all boring paying down debt and donating to family and so on BUT, my pet projects would be:

  • Get a huge sailboat or yacht to cruise around the world, possibly to a Caribean Island shack on stilts or a cabin on a rock in the North Channel;
  • Buy a baller Mountain Chateau accessible only via gondola or helicopter from which to ski deep powder and have sinister meetings regarding World Domination a la On His Majesties Secret Service;
  • Take my friends and family to a super fancy 9+ course meal at a high-class restaurant with fine wines, hor d'oevres, entres, and desserts, the kind of place that has palate cleansers, no expenses spared.  A four-hour meal where we mostly hang out all day while eating the good stuff, pausing to digest.  I love a good meal and have wondered about a truly extravagent one at a fine restaurant.  It seems so frivolous though that I don't pull the trigger...I will do that one day though lottery or not.  I'd probably have a personal chef too...and require a personal trainer.
  • And, uh, yeah, two chicks at the same time.

As far as do-gooder stuff I'd like to endow a scholarship to Michigan at my high school named after my grandpa.  My charity would be for either education or basic needs like food, shelter, clean water, etc. or special gifts to friends like a car they've always wanted or something.

Remember Walter Scott?

Remember Walter Scott?  That's the kind of thing CK is talking about.

Then there's the Justice Department reports on Baltimore, Ferguson, New Orleans and so many other towns establishing systemic law enforcement racism.

If you care to do some research you'll find good academic studies on racism in housing, real estate, lending, job hunting (drug tests make a black applicant more likely to get a job because employers assume they will fail without one), who gets the death penalty, who gets suspended from school, who gets charged with certain crimes, who gets harsher sentences.

The fact that racism exists shouldn't be controversial.

no one knows

There are theories with Arya but what she's going to get into is one of the bigger mysteries in both the show and the books.

The show had Asha doing new things

Victarion isn't in the show but Asha going to rescue Theon after receiving a, uh, piece of Theon.  I'm not really sure what was important in the books that wasn't shown so far in the show.  You basically miss a bit of Damphair and Victarion.  All the "important" stuff in the books with the Greyjoys happens after the Kingsmoot.  So I think Asha is going to take over Victarion's part and it will be pretty cool.

Nah, Sansa is going to pwn LF

She's going to just take his army.

Sansa: "Hey knights of the Vale, you know how all you care about is honor, and you're so super proud of how honorable?  Well you're following a guy who sold me to a rapist and then lied to you about it.  So.  You should follow me instead.  Oh yeah and he killed King Joffrey, which, like, was actuallyl kind of cool but is still illegal so there's that too."

Knights of the Vale: "OK, we didn't like him anyway."

If you want them to take the fall for their buddies

then give that advice.  When cops want to talk to you, they're usually trying to arrest someone.  And it doesn't matter how tangentially involved you are.  A confession in hand is worth two delinquents in the bush.  "Oh so you didn't vandalize anything but you were drinking in public?"  Opening your mouth is how they get you.

and yeah Hughie def has something to hide.  Then again don't the boosters do all the dirty work?

Conspiracy!!!!

School bonds are hard to pass in a lot of districts.  This was a 220 Million bill so about 2/3 of that is for "other district improvements.  I bet the superintendent was superSAVVY!  After getting his $40 million bond for books and upgrades from AOL rejected he was all like "WAIT!  I'll tell them we're going to build the biggest got-dang FOOTBALL stadium is Texas!  They'll vote for that!  I can even ask for more stuff for the schools!"

Check and Mate

I don't know, I'm not a coroner

Heh Heh

Favorite Flyover is Old School

I love all flyovers but the best I saw was an old-school bomber with propellers!  Super Fortress, Liberator, Flying Fortress, something like that.  You could hear it before you saw it and it kind of shook the whole stadium.  Very impressive.  Made me wonder what it would be like to be in WWII watching a wing of them approach, like someone facing our D-Line probably.

Anyway, they should go with those old bombers more often.

Yep, pretty much sums it up

There's a very real possibility that each Power Five conference champ will have a legit argument for a playoff birth.  Throw in ND maybe too (gawd).  Time to start arguing for more games!!!

Assuming UM wins out, there's a good chance it gets snubbed.  Utah needs to continue winning and an undefeated Iowa in the championship game would be nice too.  FWIW I think an undefeated OSU or MSU would be a shoo-in for a playoff spot.

http://michiganstate.247sports.com/Board/93/Contents/Sparty-and-his-people-are-the-worst-40234530

My packaging major dis appeared to be the most vicious part of my work.  I think they really appreciate my writing, so I guess my English major WAS good for something.

Other highlights:

  • re Mike D - "So tell me who are you dissin'? Maybe I'm missin'"
  • re Slave Dependent - No, it's not a coincidence; it's because "State" and "Spartan" both start with the letter "S". That's right, "S", as in, "Suck my balls, walvie, you're going to get your shit pushed in."
  • re my crappy username - "How the hell does one pronounce "blueeee"?"
  • "Too many words to declare his butt hurt."

FWIW, I've kept my hatred and MSU commentary confined to the board.  Can't go public until we win, and then, really, it's better to just bask in the victory quietly...and smugly

Been going for 20 years but

I've never seen anything like the Northwestern game.  The stadium was all up and engaged and cheering in a way I hadn't seen before.  Even the big games against MSU and ND and OSU were not like last weekend.  I didn't attend many of the major games until I became a student in 05 so there might be some that compare, but I doubt any after the renovations.  That plus HARBAUGH FEVER made for a truly incredible experience.  I expect that this coming game will be even more rowdy.  And with a W...well I can only imagine what the last game of the season would be like

Sparty and his people are the worst

Until a couple years agoI didn't hate Sparty.  I hate all opponents on game day and generally dislike ND.  OSU is a huge rivalry but the hatred was limited to losing to them.  I genuinely hate Sparty now, or at least his fans.

Grad School gala a few years ago:  Michigan is playing Syracuse in a monster BBall game.  Everyone is having a great time drinking and dancing and celebrating one final time before exams, except the Michigan fans huddled around the TV hoping to get to the championship game...and the Sparty fans watching the game to cheer against us.  Not the team, the fans in the room.  That was my moment of clarity.  Sparty fans are not happy unless we are not.

Fuck em'

Sparty sucks.  His fans suck.  His school sucks.  Lose sore, win sore, inferiority complex havin', barbarians.  I used to feel a little embarassed by my smug dismissiveness.  I miss it now, I just have hatred in my heart.  Is it a coincidence that when choosing a mascot MSU chose arguably the most slave dependent society in world history rather than...I dunno, Trojans?  No.  It isn't.  Sparty is the worst.

I hate having to live among them and listening to them whine and gloat at the same time.  I hate their tacky giant S's and Horsehair Helmet Stickers on their trucks right above their tail-hitch nuts.  I hate packaging majors and the Turf-and-Grass department.  I hate that every one of them claims he or she got into both schools.  I hate Izzo.  I hate Mike D.

I can't wait for Saturday and the next five + years.  Some healthy beatings will put them in their place and hopefully return me to smug dismissiveness, where I should be.

Some Good Leach Quotes

I just googled Mike Leach quotes and found this, has some funny stuff in there.  Sorry that it's bleacher report...

Love thinking playoffs!

I don't think it's ever too early to think Playoffs and National Championship.  Speculating about future victories is one of my favorite things to do as a fan!  This one game at a time stuff is so damn boring.  Leave it for the coaches and let's get ahead of ourselves!  Hope springs eternal!

Assuming we win out and are B1G Champs, I think we're probably in.  The issue would be whether they pick the B1G Champ or snub it in favor of the champ of another power conference.

I can't imagine the SEC not having a team in the playoffs.  If Clemson goes undefeated, they get in.  Same for any undefeated conference champ probably.  TCU or Baylor are candidates for the Big 12, possibly even OK State???, Utah in the Pac 12, and FSU also.  I think all Power 5 champs would have good arguments to get a spot.  So which conference would get snubbed?  Probably not SEC.  Same for Pac 12 IMHO, If the ACC and Big 12 champs are undefeated, we could be in trouble.  Also, ND would like to say they deserve a spot...but they don't.  Fortunately, the Harbaugh and UM resurgence narrative would really help us out, especially if we continue to steamroll every opponent and the West champ looks decent.  I bet Clemson wins out but TCU and Baylor stumble leaving:

SEC Champ - ???

Pac 12 Champ - Utah!

ACC Champ - Clemson

B1G Champ - Harbaughlers

Michigan beats the SEC champ for a rematch with the Utes.  Sweet vengeance and a National Title follow, Harbaugh leads us to 20 years of uninterrupted undefeated seasons and National Championships until everyone quits football.

First step on the path?  Beat Sparty to a pulp and make him cry.  Can't wait!  GO BLUE!

31-3 Michigan

31-3 Michigan Go Blue!

How good is Oregon?!

Knowing how good Oregon is would really help in giving me an idea about us, MSU, Utah AND Northwestern.  If it turns out the Ducks just aren't that good then our loss to Utah is less ok and means Stanford was the toughest competition either UM or NU had.  Transitive property doesn't necessarily apply in college football but what else is there to go on before the game?  It'd be nice to have a little more clarity going in to this big game, but the surprise is fine too.  Got my ticket and can't wait!

It's the Research

Notre Dame isn't a research institution on the level of any of the B1G Schools which all get national grants, in fact,  I thiiiiink ND wouldn't even qualify to join the B1G for that very reason.  Since the criteria for Global U Rankings looks at a lot of research and publishing information, ND lags behind.

For all we know

Northwestern will be the toughest game of the season.

This discussion really puts it in perspective

how toxic Brandon was.  An mlive link to minor news is all discussion about her hiring a bad AD, and seems entirely appropriate to me.  MSC's part in hiring that...guy...is enough to put a shadow on her whole presidency!  And I'm not even sure that that's hyperbole.  I still haven't read "Brandon's Lasting Lessons" because I know how depressing it will be.  I had no opinion on MSC before other than assuming she was a good president as UM continued to be a great academic institution, but athletics have always been important, and to drop the ball (HA!) so badly with him really is a major mistake on her part and causes me to wonder how good a president she really was...which is likely totally unrealistic on my part, especially with no evidence showing otherwise that I'm aware of (nor have I looked for, WHO NEEDS EVIDENCE?!)....But I like the new guy!
