They will eventually move on from "we don't pay our players" to "what's wrong with paying players"?

Hopefully this type of blatant rule breaking eventually opens things up so that  Michigan can aim its money cannon.

This is the political move.

I think, if you're Freeze, you know you're fucked unless you do something.  So I think he needs to take a risky gamble like this to blow the whole thing up.  Were I him, I'd say something like:

"Okay.  You know what, we did it.  We paid a kid's light bill.  I knew it was against the rules and we did it anyway, because the rule's aren't moral and we're trying to do what's right.  Everyone else does this too, by the way, but they're all throwing stones at me in an attempt to take down a emerging program.  We did this, I knew about it, we'll keep doing this, and that's a promise."

Regardless of whether any of those words are true or genuine, it completely reframes the NCAA's investigation.  He's been transformed from the bad guy to the good guy, and now the NCAA needs to decide whether to double down or ease off.

Ironically, he could emerge from this the "hero" of a new era in college football.

That's just part of reframing the investigation. Acknowledge some minor infraction, then pretend that's what the entire investigation is about. Swamp the press with it.

People around here seem to have forgotten how this works. We should invite Gene Smith onto the blog to do an in-service.

i think its way worse if they are actually paying the kids families bills. Its one thing to give the kid some money to survive while on campus, but if were gonna start running around supporting athletes families now, then sorry, its time for strict enforcement and no hand outs whatsoever again.

you can tell the coach was dealing with a different amount than he was used to. He's still going to get the money but he sorta calls Tunsil out before Tunsil replies that they combined multiple bills (iirc). It's a certainty that Tunsil kept some and/or usually received personal cash. That's not to say that it's right or wrong or whatever. It's just obviousness and likelihood. #1 OT recruit not getting paid when everyone around him is? Unlikely.

It's how it will eventually unfold.

Public opinion is turning against the prohibition on player compensation.  In a world where college sports is as big as it presently is, it's tough to defend an artificial restraint on trade.

Eventually, a coach will speak out against this.  It's no skin off his nose, especially to the extent that he can benefit from a few years of not being part of the camp that doesn't pay players and getting the top talent.  In fifty years, there will be a statute of that coach no matter how bad his teams were or how slimy his previous reputation was.

Did you know, for example, that in the early forties there was a debate about whether it was unethical to provide college football players with scholarships?  Do you know which coaches were for it?  Do you know which were against it?

I also assert that he has no other choice.  He's a dead man walking unless this works.  So yes, it's exactly what I'd recommend for him.

Hey, this is all way out of line. Hugh Freeze is a good, moral, religious man who loves his family and his players more than anything, and would never cheat or lie under any.....

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, just kidding.

Do I think Hugh Freeze knew Tunsil got money? Of course he knew. Do I think Freeze doesn't want to be deposed because he doesn't want anything to do with these two morons' lawsuits? Entirely possible.

Great message to send to kids who played for you. Hey you ran through a wall for me but when it comes time for me to have your back I’m too busy covering my own ass.

I am not sure the university needs its ass covered one way or the other. Even if they do get some sort of watered down punishment they will just go back to being who they always were. Yet another irrelevant SEC school, with a history of disgusting racial prejudice and some connection to the Mannings.

Freeze doesn’t care about the school, Freeze cares about Freeze. If he gets fired with cause form this gig it’s back to coaching high school for him and away go all the perks and the bagmen who passed off the golden egg with it.

I've always been the type who believes if you have nothing to hide, you have no problem talking. Obviously he's hiding something.

always have things that they want to hide.  Even when they have no involvement in the event that is being investigated, they inevitably will be asked about something that makes them uncomfortable and they often give partial truths or flat-out lie.  In their mind, they are not doing anything wrong because the issue they are addressing has nothing to do with the investigation, but inevitably the "little white lies" are found out and can actually turn somebody into a suspect when they otherwise would not be.

Yea, but they are free to lie their asses off when talking to you.

Rule #1 - Never speak to the police. Lawyer up and stay silent. Let you lawyer figure out what to say to the police.

Rule #2 - Don't believe a word the police/LEO says because most of it is false. They're just trying to get you to incriminate yourself or someone else. Don't do their job for them. Let the fuckers do it themselves.

your list of 'hideables' might be longer than some others', so make sure you take your own advice,   and don't forget to invoke your rights under the 5th (miranda, right to silence) and 6th (right to counsel) amendments.

just blog here when you make bail and we'll swap emails....

Instead of school assemblies about yo-yos and boomerang, I wish my school would have had one on how to interact with cops and your legal rights. Knowing just to have your car completely turned off and keys on the dash and hands on the steering wheel as a cop approaches will go a long way to not getting a speeding ticket

Speeding tickets are so frustrating. Unless someone is driving dangerously cops should not have the right to pull anyone over. The way I see it, if cops have extra time to post up on the side of the road and deceive people in order to pull them over they have too much time on their hands and some in the department need to be laid off.
