Wings Beat the Avs in OT - Kaner with the Game Winner!

Submitted by smotheringD on February 22nd, 2024 at 10:17 PM

The Avs still look great, very fast, even their D are fast.  But the Wings hung tough, Lyon kept them in it when the Avs were buzzing and somehow the Wings just keep scrapping out these victories.

Long way to go, this was the first game of the last third of the season.  The Wings now own the 1st Wild Card spot so if they can stay healthy, we have an excellent shot to make the playoffs.  This was our first win over the Avs since 2017.

OT (started with a short RW power play):

Yeah, I've had to temper my hatred a little bit.  After playing for West Point for 4 years my middle son was stationed in Colorado Springs.  They must have got to him.  For someone who played at a pretty high level (my son, not me) he appreciates the speed with which they play.  Mackinnon and Makar are elite and they've got depth.  When he was out there they were winning a Cup and the Wings sucked ass.

He likes the Wings too, which is weird.  Datsyuk was his favorite.  And now he has my first grandchild so I have to be civil.

But now the Wings are like Michigan Football and even the Lions!  From sucking ass to excellence.  I don't remember Detroit having this many teams so competitive.  Full props to Stevie Y and Newsie, Coach Jim, and MCDC.  LGRW!

Lyon is red hot. If he can keep it going, the Wings can cause some trouble in the playoffs.

Cossa is red hot in GR, too. Prospects are looking pretty damn good.

I saw none of it except for the OT. The wings played excellent. Lyons made a big two on zero breakaway save. Mickey said that if the wings win this game they’re going to the playoffs. They also said that the wings now have 17 come from behind third period wins, the most in the NHL. That shows some character and some grit.

You know I didn't think of it until you mentioned it.  The Wings do have a lot of grit.  We don't have the McDavid's or the Mackinnons or the Makars but it's a solid group that works hard.

Vegas was built the same way for their Cup run.  They had some good and great players but probably not what you'd call elite.  But they were deep and solid up and down the lineup.

I bit the bullet and signed up for Bally Sports because I had a feeling the Wings were gonna contend for a playoff spot this year. Plus I have ESPN+ as part of the Verizon Disney package. So no matter what I get to see the games.

However going forward it looks like the games will be streamed on Prime as part of Amazon's  bailout of DSG starting in 2025. Since I'm already a Prime subscriber it looks like I won't have to pay extra in 2025.

you might've missed the starlink post on sunday, but we just got enough TV reception to even see a 'puck'.  prior to starlink going live sunday night a 'puck' was an abstract concept, not usually visible on our TV, or at best a fuzzy thing moving between fuzzy/stick figure people who looked like they were gliding around somehow.  i may now take more of an interest in hockey for the first time in 20+ yrs, since we can now watch a game.

This feels like the reverse of that game last year when the Wings were holding onto a wild card spot and Tampa Bay came to town and shut them out. That loss was the catalyst for trading away Bertuzzi and another cycle of being hockey's have-nots.

There's still a lot to finish, but they look like they're going back to the playoffs finally.

This is a solid comment....last year, that TB shutout was deflating. But this year, this victory -- in a game not many folks gave them a good shot to win -- might be the confidence builder this team needs to propel them higher.

Assuming the goaltending holds, this is a playoff team, and one that might make some noise in the playoffs, too. Even the fourth line battles and battles, and that's huge in the playoffs.

Oh, and I'm POSBANGING everyone. It was a great game to watch last night and a great victory.
