Will Johnson- Best UM CB since Woodson?

Submitted by Bo Harbaugh on December 4th, 2022 at 5:28 PM

Woodson was obviously beyond generational, only defensive player to win a Heisman.  But we've had some talented corners and secondary playesr come through UM since all with the weight of being compared to the GOAT.  Lewis, Peppers (converted to safety), Marlin Jackson, D. Warren come to mind - but we obviously haven't been d-back U like LSU.  Lewis and Jackson were probably the closest to "lockdown" imo, but not quite really LOCKDOWN.

Watching Johnson during his freshman year, it's hard not to see the progress made during the year and feel that as a freshman, he is trending to be the best, most impactful cover corner we've had since Chuck. He has all the physical tools and seems to enjoy the bright lights.  Watching him go up against Marvin Harrison Jr. (a future top 3 NFL WR imo) was great stuff and showed how much faith the staff has in the young man.

Thoughts?

Suuuper premature.

Jourdan Lewis
Leon Hall
Marlin Jackson
Donovan Warren
Jeremy Leseuer
David Long
Ambry Thomas / Lavert Hill (hard for me to get a good read on their historical context but definitely in the conversation)

All very, very good CBs. And while Johnson has had a notable and breakout freshman performance, he hasn't been without fault this season either. None of this isn't to say that he can't develop into a great Michigan player (maybe even an all-time great). But "Best Since Woodson" includes some very good CB who had very good careers. Maybe pump the brakes a bit?

I'll take an "as good as Hall or Lewis" and be pleased as punch.

We absolutely knew his Freshman season.  The coaching staff did everything thry coukd to temper him, but ultimately they couldn't keep him off the field.

His two INT's against OSU were killers for them after Terry Glenn ran his mouth off earlier in the week, guaranteeing the win and downplaying Charles.  That OSU team is the most stacked team they've ever fielded. Eddie George, Glenn, Shawn Springs, Vrabel. The list goes on and on. Even Luke Fickell was on that team.

Woodson's picks gutted them, especially the one he snagged after stepping in front of Glenn.  I was there that day.

Jourdan Lewis was so good that he basically stopped recording statistics because teams simply threw the ball on the opposite side of the field from him. I love Will Johnson but he's not there yet.

Ways to go but for a fr he’s been closing the year with great play.  He’s made some key difference making plays and the two INT”s were massive and against an all conference WR.

Hoping next year we start seeing him locked on a #1 rec for other schools just to take them out of the game.

Will Johnson, JJ, Edwards, 5 star players matter in recruiting!!!  All 3 made game changing plays and why I’ve been saying it!  Our NIL has to start coming in so we can land them!  We want titles, championships, wins over Osu, we want to win the CFP, we aren’t doing it without 5 stars on this roster!  Yes, 3 and 4 stars with high ceilings, well developed and a culture for the team, to win all that has been built is so important.  But lining up against osu or in the CFP.. we need big time talent too!

Leon Hall was an All-American, first round pick, who played 11 years in the NFL.  Johnson has the ability to be that great but lets get a full year as a starter before we make him an All American.

I know this thread is about post-Woodson comparisons, but Ty Law was incredible here (not always remembered because of the ‘94 Kordell Hail Mary), and is in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. WJ is a much different body type, but they do have some similarities in play style.

As a true freshman, Woodson had 2 interceptions against OSU. His achievements were overlooked that game because Tim B decided to run for 313.

Last night, Johnson had 2 interceptions but his achievements were largely overlook because Edwards decided to run for almost 200.

Coincidence? Or Prophecy?

He's definitely a superstar in the making, but there have been a number of collegiate Eric Berry, Jalen Ramsey, Patrick Peterson, Dre Bly types. There was one Woodson.

We'll see. To me, it's up to Will himself, because personally I think he can go there.

I wish I had a dollar for every bad projection people have made about freshmen. Is the potential there? Sure. But there are lots of reasons it might not happen, along with a few why it might.

Since Woodson is one of the best corners in the history of football, that's a lot to live up to. Johnson could be stellar, and yet not be Woodson. Bear in mind, Woodson played offense and returned kicks, neither of which Johnson has done yet. I would not be surprised if they try him out on punt returns next season, but I have no idea if he has that kind of explosiveness.

We can compare their freshman campaigns. Woodson as a freshman was first-team all-conference and had five picks, things Johnson has not done.

Colston Loveland has a serious chance to be the best tight end we have had at least in the Harbaugh era.  But we don’t need a thread about it just yet.

Love Will, he's a freshman all american. That said, he's not even the #1 on the team. He got beat and made a smart PI play instead of giving up a TD. Give him a chance next couple years - I'll reserve judgement til then.

He's looking good and with good fortune will continue to ascend.

Michigan, as pointed out by earlier posters, has had some great cornerbacks.  So if he ends up in their company, it will be excellent indeed.

Congratulations to him in the Big10 Championship on two awesome interceptions when we needed them.

Outstanding!

From what I've seen, he has great instincts, a nose for the ball, and he pays it off by catching well. We have had many great DBs in the recent-ish past, so we'll see how he develops.

I'm so glad we have him for two more years!

You may be right but there have been a few pretty elite corners. Lewis comes to mind. Absolutely could not throw on that dude.

the note I think about it though, there have been a lot of “almost elite” corners at UM. People like Donovan Warren come to mind. Very good, but man…thought they could be super elite and never quite got there.

How many lockdown freaks at corner have we really had since CW? I mean the type of corner that makes teams think “we literally cannot throw their way”?

If Will Johnson were stock on the NYSE, I'd be bullish and buy in. This kid is a stud. His star is rising. It'll be great watching him play in the CFP against TCU, next.
