Who will QB Michigan this season?
Nothing against Cade, all he’s done is win. However, I’m just wondering what peoples’ opinions are, regarding who will QB M throughout this season.
After the first game or two, I thought we might go to a two QB system. And when the run game looked unstoppable, I thought Cade was pretty safe. Now, I’m less certain.
I don’t think a change would happen soon, if it did happen, and I’m definitely not trying to say that a change should happen.
But I would like to know who people think WILL be the starter, not who deserves it or what M SHOULD do.
So, if you think Bowman wins the starting job the night before the OSU game, chime in. I like to hear peoples’ thoughts on how this will shake out.

Cade was rattled against Rutgers. Wisky will stop the run and if Cade is still rattled and missing throws and reads he’s pulled by/at halftime.

Cade gets rattled and wiscys D is not Rutgers. If he gets happy feet and isn’t confident in his throws early it’s gonna be a long day. Wisconsin is going to make us 1 dimensional from the 1st snap and I’m rooting for Cade, but I fear the writings on the wall. Tomato can teams he’s fine but any team with a pulse and I have my doubts. If you see the 3/4 arm delivery early than pucker up. I really hope I’m getting worried for nothing but a hostile environment and a top 5 D has me a tad bit concerned.

Oh.... yea sorry people don't like it when you post discussion topics on blog thats supposed to be built around discussions. You didn't know?
But I like your post, this incessant obsessing about Michigan football is what this space is for! I think Cade will remain the starter all season 80% chance. The only caveat would be injury or maybe if Cade starts turning the ball over.

Oh Man...
September 28th, 2021 at 5:16 PM ^
I know what you mean. I don’t see many discussions here anymore. You kind of hit on it though, in that there’s more than one question. Health is obvious. But will Harbaugh switch away from a healthy McNamara? It might be one of those things where McCarthy comes in for relief (for whatever reason) and distinguishes himself to the point where it’s hard not to give him a shot at starting.
September 28th, 2021 at 6:52 PM ^
What is there to discuss. We have a quarterback who has his team undefeated a third of the way through the season and has not turned the ball over. We, as fans, are going to speculate over him losing his job to our third string QB who has received almost no hype? Makes no damn sense.
September 28th, 2021 at 10:30 PM ^
On Sunday it may make sense to you.

Dumb thread but I'll entertain it because why not. Cade is apparently safe as the starter, but I would like to see JJ sprinkled into competitive situations a little more.
September 28th, 2021 at 5:50 PM ^
I don't understand. Why is this thread dumb? Honestly asking. No snark.

2 QB systems always work very well...

Yeah, I listened to the pod too. This is a great single example from 14 years ago.
I'm not necessarily opposed to the idea, but what other proof is there that a 2QB system works to any effect?
September 28th, 2021 at 5:14 PM ^
yes, the exception proves the rule.
September 28th, 2021 at 2:48 PM ^
I wonder whether maybe Cade is getting too much heat and the receivers aren't getting enough. Do we really have a top-tier No. 1 receiver? Not really.
September 28th, 2021 at 8:11 PM ^
Interesting point. Erick All is usually good for a drop a game.
September 28th, 2021 at 2:48 PM ^
I have questions on things. Important questions. Questions like "why does Michigan run bad plays when they obviously have good ones they should be running." And "who will Michigan lose to next" I also question who will be our head coach this year. I know they say Harbaugh is but is he really? I mean REALLY????????
I'll hang up and listen.
September 28th, 2021 at 3:06 PM ^
Phil Martelli really does the coaching. Harbaugh is just a figurehead.
September 28th, 2021 at 2:50 PM ^
I think Coach Jimmy Lake finally figured out how to post to this board.

I think Dylan will get some run in the Wisconsin game, if he doesn't get injured I think he starts the rest of the year.
September 28th, 2021 at 8:28 PM ^
McCarthy?
September 28th, 2021 at 2:51 PM ^
They aren't going to bring a backup in and suddenly start passing more. Cade was doing everything asked of him until the second half of the Rutgers game, he's going to run the offense until he can't. That being said, JJ and Bowman are both probably really starting to improve at this point. They've had time to learn the playbook now, and Bowman already has good college experience while JJ is still building decision-making, speed of the game, etc.
September 28th, 2021 at 2:55 PM ^
Cade has not cost Michigan a game yet, which is a plus. No turnovers, yet. He hasn't won us a game, like pulling out a victory against Rutgers last season which is a minus.
Until Cade either costs us a game or doesn't have the playmaking ability to win a game, he remains as QB1.
Michigan could sure use a big playmaker like a Justin Fields or even the last 6 games Jake Ruddock had with us in 2015.
FWIW
September 28th, 2021 at 6:04 PM ^
Your reasoning is sound, but I disagree. I don't think we should wait until Cade has another bad outing or costs us a game. Based on what he's shown so far, and admittedly he hasn't been asked to do too much, he appears to be a "game manager" type of QB. I think we need more from the QB position to beat teams like OSU, much more. We don't have the talent and depth, especially on defense, to where a game manger QB will get us over the hump. As solid as Cade has been, I think it would have been better to see what JJ brings to the table and to have him start the Rutgers game or at least play a bunch. Unfortunately now we go on the road to a tough place, so I don't think we would or should make a QB change just yet.
September 28th, 2021 at 2:55 PM ^
My thoughts are this is a bad post and you should feel bad.
September 28th, 2021 at 2:55 PM ^
Is this an artifact? I found it odd that it was here to be answered...
September 28th, 2021 at 3:00 PM ^
Michigan is 4-0, hasnt fumbled or thrown an interception, and hasnt trailed a game yet this season. A fan made QB controversy is not something this team needs, or deserves.
September 28th, 2021 at 5:23 PM ^
There is no controversy, but there will be discussions about the QB situation. No, they are not always fan made. Will you feel better when the tv announcers, Devin Gardner, or the sports writers bring it up? Discussions aren’t always a bad thing.
September 28th, 2021 at 11:57 PM ^
UM is 4-0 and hasn’t trailed a game this year, the 1st time that’s happened since ‘71, I know, let’s change the QB, yeah, that’s the ticket!
Obviously never played or coached. And you keep doubling down on 13, and splitting 10s.
There’s no controversy here.
September 28th, 2021 at 3:00 PM ^
I am going to predict that Cade will be the opening game starter.
September 28th, 2021 at 3:01 PM ^
Brandon Peter's, although McCaffrey and Milton are nipping at his heels. Heard Milton was about to get a easy TD to Giles but overthrew him by 50 yards in practice.
September 28th, 2021 at 10:06 PM ^
Brandon Peter's...what? And who is Brandon Peter?
September 28th, 2021 at 3:04 PM ^
I just want to know where the Villari-Cat is. I heard a lot of Taysom Hill comparisons during Hype Season.
September 28th, 2021 at 3:11 PM ^
It's hidden somewhere safe along with the option to pass or pitch the ball when we deployed the Pep-cat.
September 28th, 2021 at 3:06 PM ^
McNamara won't make it to Nebraska.
September 28th, 2021 at 4:44 PM ^
So, your comrades intend to make sure he misses the plane?
September 28th, 2021 at 3:07 PM ^
I think McNamara gets the Kelly Bryant treatment at some point this year. I don't mean that as a bad thing. Bryant was playing good for Clemson, but it was obvious he wasn't taking them the next step. Super talented freshmen Trevor Lawrence was ready and it changed the program.
Just a gut feeling I have. Is McCarthy as good as Lawrence, who knows until he plays.
September 28th, 2021 at 3:17 PM ^
Whoever plays best will start. If JJ starts to outperform Cade, he will start. Otherwise, nothing changes unless we lose 4 straight and look awful offensively while doing it.l
September 28th, 2021 at 3:17 PM ^
You might have wanted to start with a line like, Can you believe Oklahoma? Fans chant, We want Caleb!
https://www.si.com/college/2021/09/26/oklahoma-fans-chant-backup-qb-spencer-rattler-west-virginia
And then we might have been able to have a discussion like is that where we see us after another week?
BTW, Spencer Rattler turned 21 today. Happy Birthday!
September 28th, 2021 at 5:48 PM ^
I don’t know. There’s people who discuss things here, and there’s people who just want to bash and trash. I don’t know know that you can frame things in such a way as to turn that second group into rational discussers of issues. I get your point though.
September 28th, 2021 at 3:21 PM ^
Personally I think Cade was banged up a little bit in the 2nd half.
2 things will happen from here
- We will find out that Rutgers is a good team. Schiano can coach.
- Michigan is a very good team and will personally get dressed in their Sunday best and steamroll to each haters house to deliver a gift basket and a hearty "fuck you"
September 28th, 2021 at 3:24 PM ^
I don't think Cade makes it through, either...
May see JJ in small doses this Saturday...
