When do they have to announce the Penn State game time

Submitted by James Burrill Angell on October 2nd, 2022 at 3:30 PM

Does anyone have any idea when the TV contract says they have to announce the Penn State game time. It’s less than two weeks away. I always thought the rule was two weeks

In most but not all cases, you will know 12 days prior (the Monday before the Saturday before the game).

But not always.  They HAVE to announce it by the Sunday before the game - there is the possibility the networks utilize a “6 day selection” for the game.  They can do this a few times a year (not every week).

If they make this a noon game and State a night game I will riot

Nobody wants sparties in Ann Arbor all day and wasting a maize out on a noon kick would be pathetic

It will most likely be a noon or 3:30pm game which is a bummer. Would like to have this game be a premier night game for us.

There is a USC vs. Utah game that Fox has booked for 7:30pm ET that weekend. Alabama vs. Tennessee will most likely be 3:30pm.

Fox gets first pick every weekend and we are the premier matchup for both the B1G and Big 12 conferences that weekend.

My guess is -

Michigan vs. Penn State @ Noon or 3:30pm / Alabama vs. Tennessee at Noon or 3:30pm.

Utah vs. USC - 7:30pm ET (locked in already)

This is not correct. FOX does not have the first pick each weekend. FOX and ESPN have split the Big Ten rights. FOX does get a bigger share, but ESPN gets theirs as well. As someone posted above that was covered in a piece in the Athletic, FOX and ESPN have a draft where they select games and weekends where they get the first pick I believe. Many of these picks have been similar each year for big games; Michigan-MSU has been on FOX for four straight years, and Michigan-PSU has been on ABC/ESPN for four straight years.

One unusual quirk about this year is that the ND-OSU game was in the Big Ten inventory so that may have caused a ripple effect for where certain games landed. I have a feeling the networks for the PSU and MSU games may be flipped because of it.

"A lot of milk spilled out onto the concourse outside Michigan Stadium this afternoon, screaming epithets at network and university personnel as they arrived to set up for the mid-day broadcast of the Michigan-MSU football football game. Damage from the melee was estimated as high as thirty dollars as a shaved ice stand was turned over by police wrestling with the rioter. One arrest was made as back-up units at Stadium and Packard were called to the scene. . ."

My wife and I got free tickets to the penn state game, but the only way we can go is if it is a noon game. We have been anxiously waiting for the announcement for a while now.

It would be nice to have a maize out night game! Last year I thought our game against PSU was going to be a whiteout night game. So, the networks will probably save PSU playing us at night. Bummer!

Yeah, there have been a lot of anecdotes from FOX CFB personalities that have said as much without outright stating it. I'm kind of bummed, was hoping for a night game for PSU. At this point, scheduling MSU game at night seems rather pointless. They're going to be no better than 3-4 coming into that one.

Somewhat Off-Topic: The hockey team plays currently 12th-ranked Boston University at 5:00 PM at Yost on October 15. Would that have any bearing on whether the Penn State football game would be scheduled for noon or 3:30 that day?

For those who follow college hockey, BU won their regular-season opener last night against Bentley and they looked pretty good against a lower-rung team from the AHA. They have an exhibition against Canadian University of Waterloo next weekend, so their two games at Yost will be their first real tests of the season. In February, BU's goalie, Drew Commesso became the youngest goalie ever to start for the USA in the Olympics.

This is Michigan

Michigan is trying to schedule this game for Fox Noon so that Charles can participate in the celebration for the 25th Anniversary of the 1997 National Championship.

More than likely it will be a noon game.

I have no insight to the time of this game - but, I will share my perspective.

Maize outs are great - and, the Washington game last year was one example.

Night games in Ann Arbor can be fantastic - again, both Washington last year - and Hawaii this season.   However, night games in November can be chilly.

So - what is my recommendation.   First - for the Spartans - I'd prefer either noon or 3:30 - that's Halloween weekend - and, I'm sure there are going to be plenty of "theme" parties around a college town like Ann Arbor to enjoy the occasion.

Second - Michigan has dealt with more White-Outs in State College, Pa than I can count.  It's time for the opportunity to "return the favor".   October, especially mid-October, would afford "better" evening / night weather.  The temperatures will, most likely, be cooler - but, very manageable - with game time temps most likely in the 50's or mid / high 40's.   And, an evening game - a Maize Out - would provide an opportunity for recruiting prospects / targets - to visit campus - and take in the environment.

Perhaps - or hopefully - we'll know later today.
