I don't know who the 'we' is referring to, and I don't see any prior discussion about the baseball HOF, but your points are all pretty much 'on point'.
Who knows what the criteria are. Seems like when it comes down to it, it ends up being pretty arbitrary. Although we DO know that they have quite a bias against prog rock, hence why it took so long for genesis, yes, and rush to get in, and why supertramp, kansas, ELP, and Jethro Tull still aren't in (ridiculous).
Claiming that REO Speedwagon and Supertramp are 'essentially the same band from opposite sides of the pond' is WILD to me. Supertramp is such an original sounding band, with a LOT of prog rock influence (see 'Crime of the Century'). And even their biggest album, 'Breakfast in America', for example. I love REO speedwagon but I don't think they were out here putting tuba and clarinet on smash hit songs.
The album this song is on came out when I was a sophomore in high school, so that's definitely part of the reason why I love that it became a tradition at the games (and the tradition started when I was in grad school at UofM, so even more fun to have been a student when it started). But I think there's definitely something to the idea that the lyrics and overall emotion of the song fit with where we were as a program/fanbase when the tradition started. Just think about it:
The song is about being jealous that your girlfriend is cheating on you with another guy and being devastated by it. First of all, who can't relate to the general idea of longing for someone and seeing them with someone else. Second of all, that was us as a program. We kept seeing our 'girl', the big ten championship, with some other guy. And it was ESPECIALLY devastating that it was mostly MSU and OSU we kept seeing her with. The guys we would absolutely least want to see her with.
And even though the lyrics of the song say "I'm Mr Brightside", implying that the main character is still trying to be positive and look on the brightside, the tone and emotion of the song absolutely imply that he is not seeing any silver lining in this situation. AKA, the main character of the song is definitely in BPONE. Again, that was US! That was how we were feeling every football season. Thinking that our destiny is the Big Ten championship, and it's been calling to us, but we just can't seem to reach it.
Now, that may seem like a whole lot of words about some emo song that doesn't have anything to do with football. And you might want to reply with something like "Sir, this is a Wendy's" in some joking manner. But it really does seem to me that we gravitated to that song as a fanbase because of the emotional state we were in at the time. Obviously we've left that behind, but if the students still love singing along to it during games, then we should definitely keep doing it.
It's half serious, half inside joke from the movie "I love you, man" (in which Rush actually appear), where Jason Segel and Paul Rudd's characters are obsessed with the band.
Also, in these kinds of discussions I tend to make it a 'well yeah, The Beatles, but besides them....'
I wish the local Ann Arbor media would have conducted this survey for JV assistant coaches about 5 years ago so I could have given a shoutout to Rush, the greatest band of all time.
Led Zep is in the same category as The Beatles, where you just ignore them when you are doing comparisons because it's pointless. They're so head and shoulders above everybody else that when you compare them to other bands it's unfair to the other bands.
Is there a band with a better 'first five albums' run than Metallica from Kill 'em all through the Black Album?? There definitely are some that are equal, but I don't know if I can think of any that surpass it.
As a Christian, I’ve always thought it would be more appropriate for players after the game to be more specific about thanking God for the opportunities they’ve been given in life (including playing whatever sport they just played), instead of leaving it kind of implied that they are thanking God for helping them win the game.
Did you see the video of Michigan coaches/players saying nice things about OSU and Ryan day refusing to each time he was given the chance? Remember when he acted like a child and promised to hand 100 on Harbaugh? Seems like a dick to me, but not actually a bad person. definitely a huge improvement over the previous guy though.
I saw Sting and Peter Gabriel at the Palace back in 2016 when they were touring together. Now THAT was a great show. They alternated songs and sang a few of each other’s songs. Sting sang with the backup singers whenever Peter Gabriel would do a song. It was super cool.
I won't argue with someone if they want to say each band at their peak is tied for the greatest power trio of all time. But I think we definitely have to give the nod to RUSH at the end of the day just due to longevity. They are 4th on the list of most consecutive gold albums all time (behind The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Aerosmith). 4th!!!!11!!1. That's unbelievable for a band that almost never had the benefit of having positive press from the music media.
Furthermore, maybe another reason to give RUSH the nod is that they also had 3 lead instruments (at least, considering Geddy Lee also playing keys), and never dissolved. Made great music for 40 years.
Any source for this? I was a visiting member of the faculty from 2018-2020 and the conversation was always, ‘we won’t add masters programs because we want our students to move on from the Hope bubble for their graduate school experience.’
And even if they do add some masters programs, like getting back the excellent athletic training program they had, there isn’t really a need to change the name of the school.
As a former Hope football player, I have mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, now the great rivalry can extend to the gridiron. On the other, now I can no longer make fun of them for not having football like a real school.
Am I reading the QB chart correctly, in that JJ has not had any balls batted down at the line of scrimmage yet? Has anybody addressed that, after having it happen to us all the time last year? Or is it one of those, shhhh don't look at it/talk about it, or we might jinx it?
On the podcast Brian implied that now he is going to have to check for that as he does the UFR for the offense this week to see if we do indeed have a strong tendency (like Klatt pointed out). So, seems like we might have a pretty good idea when the offense's UFR comes out later this week.
That’s what it was like playing against Chris greenwood and Albion my senior year at Hope. He covered me the whole game and then got drafted by the lions that spring. Just playing on a different level of ability than the rest of us on the field.
My wife and I got free tickets to the penn state game, but the only way we can go is if it is a noon game. We have been anxiously waiting for the announcement for a while now.

Supertramp is so fricken good.

I agree. Popular Music Hall of Fame should just about cover it.
I just have to go off from what my dad says, since I wasn't born until the late 80s, but Grand Funk were HUGE.

You had me at 'prog rock guys'.

This gave me a good chuckle.

Metallica's cover of Whiskey in the Jar kicks ass

+1 for Thin Lizzy's Rosalie cover
Also, the Yes album Drama is super good!
Alien Ant Farm's cover of Smooth Criminal
Cheap Trick's cover of Ain't That a Shame
Aerosmith's cover of Remember (Walking In The Sand)
Deep Purple's cover of Hush
The White Stripe's cover of I Just Don't Know What to do With Myself
Yes' cover of America by Simon and Garfunkel is really really good.
Here's why 'melk' is acceptable, in my opinion:
We have plenty of people of Dutch descent here in Michigan, and especially in West Michigan (where I was born and currently reside).
Guess what the Dutch word for milk is? "Melk".
Tough
Hang it in the Louvre. It's beautiful. (Or at least hang a tablet up on the wall that plays this gif on repeat)

All I’m saying is that he exists somewhere in between ‘class act’ and ‘piece of poop’.

Why not both
Packers fans are just the worst
Just have them all tie for #1

Defend the orange and blue
Hope College has been doing just fine as well. Just had a record number of incoming freshman this fall.
Although when I played, Adrian was the team I disliked the most.
Changing their name to Calvin ‘University’ the second they add a couple masters programs might be the most Calvin thing in history.
Word.
Hey if we want to get into some lengthy Dutch Reformed discussions on predestination I am here for it.

Since we gave up a batted ball for a pick 6 today, I will take any and all negs

Obviously there’s a major trade off for a school like hope, and that’s $$$
Hope’s education program is better than most of those schools, besides msu. Don’t forget about the small schools!
Not cool, man. As an avid amateur herpetologist, this hurts my heart.
At least the first drive after halftime.
