Looks promising.

Fleck went 1-11 his first year at Western.

the defense is gonna be lights out...
If someone told you that our defense is going up against a team with a strong run game, but a QB who may or may not be able to throw it down the field, with no outside threats other than TEs ...you'd be licking your chops.

With all of these young guys that are still establishing themselves, there has to be a ton of money left in the 'ole coaching salaries piggy bank.
February 14th, 2024 at 2:36 AM ^
Warde is doing a huge share buy back. Its a lot like layoffs. Really good for the shareholders long term.
February 14th, 2024 at 10:22 AM ^
That’s a lot of wishcasting.

Is Mike Hart still the rb coach?
February 13th, 2024 at 10:29 PM ^
Feels like probably. We haven't heard anything about any RB coach options.
February 14th, 2024 at 7:20 AM ^
If Hart’s goal is getting the top job one day, and he was passed over for OC, seems like it would suit his ambitions to establish himself as an attractive outside hire
February 13th, 2024 at 10:42 PM ^
I'd be happy if Hart remains but not shocked if he leaves. He needs a raise.
February 13th, 2024 at 10:58 PM ^
According to Holland, RB recruits Bud Coombs & Iverson Howard said they haven’t heard from Hart in a while. They said Sherrone Moore has personally reached out to them.
February 13th, 2024 at 11:08 PM ^
Seems pretty obvious they’re letting Hart find another gig and will announce his replacement at the same time.
February 13th, 2024 at 11:08 PM ^
I head from somewhere that Hart is on a leave of absence.
February 14th, 2024 at 2:36 AM ^
I think we can all confirm this.
February 14th, 2024 at 8:13 AM ^
He missed the team banquet, think they called it "a family affair" or something like that. Hopefully it's got nothing to do with the health issues he had a few years back.
February 14th, 2024 at 12:24 AM ^
If this is true, why isn't Hart working? Last time I checked, he's still an employee at Michigan. Elston was on a recruiting trip a few days before he announced his decision to the Chargers.
This is disappointing.
February 14th, 2024 at 12:45 AM ^
Hart's contract lapsed as far as we know. So not sure if he's still an employee at this point.
February 13th, 2024 at 11:14 PM ^
I want Hart to stay, but if he doesn't I wonder if Denard moves over from his current job. Seems like he could be a great recruiter.
February 14th, 2024 at 8:59 AM ^
If Hart does want out, then that would mean 3 Michigan alums that were on the coaching staff last year wanted to leave. I am not questioning any culture problems within the program, but possibly within the Athletic Department.
February 14th, 2024 at 9:26 AM ^
Newsome and Bellamy are still on staff.
Harbaugh has been wanting to leave for the NFL for sometimes. Elston got passed over for the DC gig. Hart…who the hell knows?
February 14th, 2024 at 10:45 AM ^
If any of those alums have a dream of being the head coach for Michigan, the move might be to find a promotion elsewhere. If I were in their shoes, I'd look at it like this:
- If Moore does well, he could be the head coach at Michigan for a long time. As a result, my career growth has an obvious ceiling at Michigan.
- If he does poorly, the athletic department likely won't promote from within again. There's a good chance they clean house or keep me on staff while they bring in a big splash hire.
- If Moore does well and has NFL aspirations (or is lured back to Oklahoma where he once played), I could possibly see myself promoted from within. Doesn't seem likely.
- If I leave and prove my value as a coordinator and/or head coach, I will be high on the list for a replacement when they move on from Moore. Given the typical life-span of college coaches nowadays, this is probably the most likely path of becoming a head coach at Michigan.

I think there's some issue going on with Hart that goes beyond the coaching change. I hope it's not health-related. His absence from the victory parade due to a "family commitment" was a little odd.
February 14th, 2024 at 6:44 AM ^
I thought San said something about Hart again on the MGoRadio segment. Something about a personal commitment or personal issue again
February 14th, 2024 at 8:13 AM ^
Webb has said quite a few times that he thinks Hart is dealing with something off the field. If it is personal, its not my place to speculate what that specific issue might or might not be, but his absence has gone on for quite a while.
Which leads me to believe that either there is something pretty serious going on in his personal life, or that Moore has given Hart his vision for how his offensive staff looks next year, Hart doesn't like his place in it, and he's exploring his options.
February 14th, 2024 at 12:38 AM ^
Kinda wish Moore had pushed Elston and Clink out the door faster. If those guys had left on Minter’s timeline, Moore wouldn’t have had to appear so flat footed in this transition.
That and retained Roney to pair w/ Scruggs. These days you need specialized DL and OLB/Edge Rushers coaches more than you need multiple coaches for the secondary.
EDIT: That said - if BJM falls through, maybe they should hire both the Texans’ Safeties coach AND Lamar Morgan, giving both a little more coordinator responsibilities while turning the LBs over to Wink.
February 14th, 2024 at 1:31 AM ^
How does Moore appear flat-footed? That certainly isn't my perception. He had no control over the timing of Harbaugh's offers for them to join the Chargers' staff.
February 14th, 2024 at 7:05 AM ^
Jim never would have tolerated dragging out hires for a “background check”; He could look Shemy, Conor, and MWeiss in their eyes and see into their soul
February 14th, 2024 at 8:15 AM ^
Why would he push them out the door when he (presumably) wanted them to stay?
February 14th, 2024 at 3:15 PM ^
HE may have wanted them to stay, but they clearly weren't as amenable to his terms as would've been necessary to keep them. There was zero controversy over other guys whose roles were clear (i.e., Newsome (who Harbaugh really wanted), and Campbell and Bellamy (scant public rumors on Harbaugh's interest or lack thereof)). I'm not working with perfect information, but I just wonder if it wouldn't have been better to expedite those departures, thus minimizing some of the negativity those moves stirred up both inside and outside of the program.
February 14th, 2024 at 2:59 AM ^
As close as we were to getting the Notre Dame guy or as close as we were to retaining Clink? Or more like as close as we were to getting Harbaugh a new contract back in November?
February 14th, 2024 at 9:35 AM ^
Hearing Hart was thought to be a leaker and on team Warde. Pretty certain he’s gone.
February 14th, 2024 at 10:08 AM ^
Hearing that you are engaging in calumny.
February 14th, 2024 at 1:12 PM ^
Check the receipt in a few months. Hart was not a Harbaugh friend. He never actually let go of the dispute they got in when Harbaugh was at Stanford and dissed the M classes. You can believe it or not. You can neg me, but a group of people very close to the situation confirm this is the reason for the silence and departure.

Have to say, Harbaugh dealt Moore a shit hand and Moore has been able to turn it around.
February 14th, 2024 at 11:08 AM ^
Actually, not completely true. I believe some of these coach recommendations are from the outgoing staff. In addition, Moore has to grow on his own.
Harbaugh is still very much a Michigan man.
February 14th, 2024 at 11:44 AM ^
Assuming all basically goes to plan and they settle on BJM and Morgan/Adegoke, this is a pretty good defensive staff with Wink at the top. You've got guys who can likely recruit up and down the position groups, and I think Wink can scheme up a good game against most teams.
Also it's sorta cool that I think the entire defensive staff save Wink will be African American, which you hope continues the pattern Harbaugh started where he hired a number of up-and-coming younger AA coaches and then gave them chances to grow beyond that (both Hart and Moore got chances to be HC for games this year, and obviously Moore took over for Harbaugh). I read somewhere that Maryland's staff was the only majority-Black staff in CFB this past year, and if these hires go as expected I think UM would also hold that designation this coming year. Just sort of cool.
