Vegas Now Favors Harbaugh Staying...
January 18th, 2024 at 1:37 PM ^
If the statements that he's asking for the new contract to not have an active date before Feb 15 is true, then that's 100% evidence that he wants to be back in the NFL. He may view this season as his last chance (not sure why, it's not like he's at an age that a coach wouldn't be in the NFL).
January 18th, 2024 at 2:28 PM ^
It's evidence that he's open to leaving if a very particular NFL situation becomes available to him. I imagine he is also very open to staying at Michigan if a very particular contract is offered to him now.
For example: if Michigan decided to start getting major NIL together to compete with the big boys, offered him burger and sign gate immunity and gave him his arbitration clause, and got the money right, I think he's mostly a lock to stay.
If and NFL team offers to basically make him head coach and GM AND has a pretty strong Cap and personnel situation, he would be extremely tempted to go.
January 18th, 2024 at 2:37 PM ^
Except that he doesn't need to sign a new contract with U-M to go to the NFL. Moreover, I don't see him as the kind of guy who would sign a new deal here and then decide to bolt.
It's been suggested that these clauses his camp is reportedly insisting on (and U-M balking at fulfilling) are simply a stall tactic, to buy time for himself while NFL franchises might make a decision on him. Maybe ... but again, I don't see him as a guy who'd negotiate dishonestly.
I think he's genuinely torn. In addition to simply having an interest in the pros, it seems that (as his friend Todd Anson regularly seems to suggest) there is apparently something about his professional relationship with Manuel, or someone else at U-M, that is lacking. Anson regularly alludes to this (while usually adding that he thinks Harbaugh will end up sticking around).

Umm
Not interviewing for NFL jobs annually would be a start.
January 18th, 2024 at 12:43 PM ^
pretty sure brian is one of those people...but won't push him out.
January 18th, 2024 at 12:58 PM ^
Agreed, based on what he said in the round table I would say he is in the camp of “Just go if you’re going to go. Stop with the NFL flirtation every year.” Which is definitely where I am as well.
January 18th, 2024 at 1:51 PM ^
Which is fine and dandy coming off 15-0. You guys will feel different if/when Moore or insert random guy has them at 8 or 9 win seasons and losing to OSU again more often than not.
This is one of 5 guys on the planet able to do what he does and happens to be an alum.
Maybe teleport back 12 years and remember the feeling.
January 18th, 2024 at 2:05 PM ^
Not sure what your point is. No one is saying they want Harbaugh to leave. How does your statement change if he leaves next offseason instead of this off season? Are you assuming all of these NFL flirtations he is doing are just that, flirtations? And he will never leave Michigan until he retires? If so, why even do them?
No one wants him to leave that I know of. We just want him to make up his mind.
January 18th, 2024 at 2:14 PM ^
Here's the bottom line for me: there is no reason to believe any coach is an upgrade over Harbaugh. The man inherited a Michigan program that had gone 46-42 in the seven previous years. He's gone 89-25 and just delivered arguably the best 3-year run in school history, capped off with a national title. There is no rational reason to believe we'd be better off with any other coach, and the internal candidates can only stand to benefit from being around him longer. So yeah, we should want him here as long as possible, whether that's one, two, or ten more years.
January 18th, 2024 at 2:29 PM ^
This is so ridiculously short sighted. I get that people don't like the annual month long tummy ache in the off season and I'd want him gone if we were finishing second in conference and losing the citrus bowl every year but we're perennial champions and just won it all on the best season in Michigan football history. "just get outta here, pal" is such a dumb ass take lol
January 18th, 2024 at 12:50 PM ^
I get the feels on this. I do. But if the price to pay is one month of NFL flirtation every year for having an amazing team every year ... sign me up for that deal.
January 18th, 2024 at 1:06 PM ^
The price to pay is the recruits and transfers we miss out on every year, which will now start to catch up to us with all of the high level and talented players leaving for the NFL or other schools.
We were able to retain the core group of players in spite of Harbaugh’s flirtations with the NFL, because they were one team all together for the same mission.
Will that continue after this years National Championship? I guess time will tell. But so far this offseason it has not. Just look at the WR from idaho, Gatlin Bair. All reports say he would have already signed with Michigan, but he wants to know what Harbaugh will do first.
January 18th, 2024 at 2:09 PM ^
the recruits and transfers we miss out on every year,
Such as? Who have we lost?
It seems to me like we've cleaned up in the portal these last few years. How could we have done any better?
If anything, what might have hurt us this year is that our season went on so long and JJ didn't announce his NFL decision until last weekend.
January 18th, 2024 at 2:30 PM ^
People have been whining about this since we first got Harbaugh 9 years ago. They dream of the brady hoke days when we were landing top 10 classes every year.
January 18th, 2024 at 1:07 PM ^
I am with you CW. Let him check what’s out there. Let’s not forget a few years ago it seemed nobody wanted Harbaugh even Michigan so good for him to remind himself and us what a great job he has done by listening to the NFL. In the end he will reconfirm what we and he already know, he has a great job at a great place where he has a lot of say and now a President who gets how important the program is to the University. Good luck getting all of that at a 3-5 year stint with any NFL team. I seriously doubt they will check enough boxes to get him to leave but if they do then great for him, he deserves it. Nothing that happens today or tomorrow or after will take away the absolute joy it has been to be a Michigan fan the last 3 years. Thank you Jim Harbaugh and please stay!

It was FINALLY addressed this morning on the Michigan Insider that the yearly rumors of Harbaugh to the NFL are hurting recruiting. Jim in the end needs to do whats best for him, but if he stays...I surely hope he can address the constant rumors. You know (we have seen it this year) that there's people being paid to negatively impact Michigan. Squash the talk and move forward.
I hope the whole gang stays together for one more year, but if Jim does leave I hope he is the only one who does.
January 18th, 2024 at 12:59 PM ^
I agree and Brian is right. It is hurting recruiting that's undeniable. To me it's very clear Harbaugh wants to go to the NFL, I hope this year he gets his chance. I appreciate everything he has done here, but I'm more than fine if he moves on.
January 18th, 2024 at 12:57 PM ^
I agree with dave...I was just reading about Kirby Smart taking a helicopter to go meet with a recruit (another 5 star) you know so they can compete for a National Championship year in and year out, meanwhile Harbaugh is fielding NFL interviews...again.
January 18th, 2024 at 1:38 PM ^
Georgia has all that extra money from not even making the playoffs...
January 18th, 2024 at 12:57 PM ^
It's a package deal situation. His personality quirks and unpredictability are part of what makes him such a great football coach. We can't really laud those attributes when they suit us and lament them when they don't.
January 18th, 2024 at 1:03 PM ^
He gave us everything we could have even dared to ask for. So he gets a long leash with us.
But it's not about us. It's about Michigan. I don't see why he would want to hurt the program he spent so much blood, sweat, and tears building back up.
And this weird will-he-won't-he dance is starting to hurt the program. It could be handled differently.
January 18th, 2024 at 12:41 PM ^
Honestly I'm not really even paying attention to the Harbaugh stuff. Even if he stays this year and signs a new contract, he will continue to interview with the NFL every year and we are going to just have to deal with that. I am honestly starting to think he just genuinely likes the attention. He is going to be Michigan's coach until he is not.
January 18th, 2024 at 1:05 PM ^
If Harbaugh does come back to Michigan, it will be because he did not get what he wanted from the NFL. So, he will try again next year. And the year after that.
Which, fine. Chase your dreams, you've earned it.
But if he comes back, he needs to come up with a coherent and public succession plan. Such as anoint Sherrone as the coach-in-waiting and then mentor him to take the head coach position when the time comes.
Recruits and transfers will then know who they may wind up playing for. There is no need for all of the chaos and uncertainty. It is starting to unnecessarily do damage to the program he loves, why would he want to do that?.
January 18th, 2024 at 1:08 PM ^
I think Harbaugh loves the program but I think he also has a miles-wide ego. He sees himself as far more valuable to Michigan than Michigan is to him so he wants to dominate the terms of his employment.
January 18th, 2024 at 2:13 PM ^
After this year, if no one offers JH an NFL HC job with all the openings and all of his recent success, then why should we think than anyone will offer him a job in the future? At that point I think he's stuck with U-M and U-M is stuck with him, for better or worse. Hopefully better.
January 18th, 2024 at 4:48 PM ^
Different teams will open up next year.
Harbaugh's top-of-the-line NFL agent has a good read on how marketable Harbaugh is to the NFL, even if it is next year. He will know how long the NFL door will stay open, and when it will close for good.
January 18th, 2024 at 2:23 PM ^
But if he comes back, he needs to come up with a coherent and public succession plan.
The problem with that is that he'd be making himself a lame duck, when he probably has no idea how much longer he wants to coach.
January 18th, 2024 at 12:41 PM ^
Well I will always bet on Michigan football, and Vegas always knows more than the average fan, but nobody knows except for Jim - and he might not even know.
January 18th, 2024 at 12:42 PM ^
"Ask again later"
January 18th, 2024 at 12:42 PM ^
I still am not clear how anyone can possibly set odds on what is going on in Jim Harbaugh's brain.
January 18th, 2024 at 1:10 PM ^
Odds indeed.
January 18th, 2024 at 12:42 PM ^
Draft Kings still has him -250 Chargers, +175 Not Coaching NFL. I think I just switched to being a BetMGM user.
January 18th, 2024 at 12:43 PM ^
You're comparing the odds from DraftKing to the odds at BetMGM.
I heard an interview recently from an executive from one of these sites and he acknowledged they basically pull these odds out of their ass which is why the significantly limit the amount you're allowed to bet. They post these as basically a teaser to get you on the site with a small bet to hopefully get you to bet much larger amounts on the games they do know something about.
January 18th, 2024 at 12:45 PM ^
Are you implying that legalized gambling is all just a racket to slowly siphon money away from rubes?
January 18th, 2024 at 1:12 PM ^
She's way out of his league. Dude, you've already won your long shot gamble. Step away.
January 18th, 2024 at 12:51 PM ^
This is correct. These markets have super low limits and are not "sharp" markets. They're basically an advertisement.
MGM / DraftKings are legal sites, but a lot of the times you see odds for crazy markets, it's at the offshore books (illegal books) that do it for the publicity.
I wouldn't read too much into the odds. If they swing widely, that would be more informative.
January 18th, 2024 at 1:02 PM ^
FWIW I just spent about 10 minutes on both sites. Nowhere do i see a page that lists those odds or a way to place a bet. And I searched under Los Angeles Chargers, Head Coaching changes, Jim Harbaugh and football in general.
Nothing.
January 18th, 2024 at 1:13 PM ^
Using the draftkings app, it is 100% a "bettable" prop. I do not see a limit on the bet.
January 18th, 2024 at 1:18 PM ^
Would you mind posting the link to that page or posting the site navigation needed to find it? I once again went on the site and searched every way I know how to search and opened every tab that looked like it might lead to that page and have come up empty.
I see your screen shot above, how to I get to it?
January 18th, 2024 at 1:22 PM ^
On the DK Sportsbook app, click NFL to see all their NFL markets. There is a list of "tabs" along the top that starts with Game Lines, Progressive Parlay, etc. Scroll all the way to the right to see "Head Coaches"
They have odds for Bill B and Jim.
I don't use DK's website for betting, so I can't tell you how to find it there.
January 18th, 2024 at 1:28 PM ^
It's not there and that's my point. You dont use it for betting, I do, and cannot make a bet.
There is nothing listed for head coaches in states where you can actually place a wager on this. I'm guessing you're in a state where you cant bet so they can post stuff like this without any fear of anyone actually betting on it. Here in Ohio, where sports betting is legal, there is no way to place a bet on where Jim will end up.
These are fake odds because there's no way to bet on them.
January 18th, 2024 at 1:45 PM ^
Same. In Iowa. That tab doesn't exist.
January 18th, 2024 at 1:50 PM ^
The tab is active on DraftKings in Michigan FYI. Does not state if there is a limit (although I'm sure that there is).
January 18th, 2024 at 1:57 PM ^
just don't bet that $2 you might owe me. or better yet, hedge the bet by putting all $2 staying so that if i'm right you can repay yourself with all that vegas moola.
January 18th, 2024 at 3:17 PM ^
I'm in Michigan and use the APP to place my bets, not the website. My point was I cannot tell you how to find the bet using their website. It is 100% a bettable prop on their APP...IN MICHIGAN. Not sure how much clearer I can be on that.
January 18th, 2024 at 3:28 PM ^
Same here. Live in Michigan, searched "Harbaugh" on Draftkings app and the market does indeed appear. -250 Chargers, etc. May not be available in other states I guess.
