This.

Meyer was already known for his own brand of ethics *long* before he was hired as the osu head coach... yet they (or at least Gee & Smith) didn't even bat an eye before bringing him in.

My respect for USC (or at least their current administration) went up tremendously when, after the Carroll fallout and subsequent flailings in the program), their current president said in no uncertain terms that Meyer would not be hired on her watch... despite a clear need for his football acumen and a strong faction of their boosters willing to write a blank check.

Honest answer: I don't feel like I'm speaking out now, nor when he was head coach... my opinion of him hasn't really changed since he teabagged OSU in 06' while at Florida. Most (well adjusted) OSU fans knew what we were getting when Meyer was hired... a lot of wins and some bad PR. Was I excited that OSU hired him, hell yeah! Did I view him as a great person, hell no. He did what he was hired to do.. win games, so it's just a personal opinion as to how much a coach's image reflects upon the university vs just the football program. In my opinion, UM fans (generalizing here) are much more wrapped up in the optics of the university as a whole compared to most other fan bases.

Good for you.  I've never been comfortable with the pedestal fans put coaches on.  They are just human and if you pretend they are more than that you will be either really disappointed when you learn about their flaws or will irrationally defend them because you can't imagine they are really "that person ".  Having said that you'd hope your schools chosen representative will have at least the bare minimum of a moral compass and it appears Urban never has.   So he may be fit to win football games but shouldn't ever be given the chance to coach college kids/young adults again.

Looking at the lay of the land, this question is hardly an academic only type exercise.  Many knew Meyer would have a bad year at Jacksonville and questioned if he’d even make it all the way through the season before bailing.  Add in the fact that if UM struggled and finished 7-6 or worse, Harbaugh may well be vacating his position at the end of the year. Looking at the field of available coaches, who would be a better home run type hire than Meyer?  Likely no one.
With that in mind, I was steeling myself for what would I do if UM hired Meyer, and the conclusion I came to is I’d probably just not watch/engage with the football program during his tenure.  I’m sure it would be full of wins and probably a run of great recruiting and even include wins over OSU and B1G Titles and CFP berths.  It just would feel dirty and wrong on too many levels for me.
I also doubt after his time at OSU he’d really consider UM when Texas and USC are going to back the Brinks truck up to his house anyway.

All fair points... it's certainly a moral bargaining arc, and everyone is going to land at different points according to their personal values vs wanting a winning program.

Just here pointing out that not every OSU fan is an Urban apologist... he's a dick. But he also won alot of games.. so there's the conundrum.

I'd take the wins but I'm just a football fan, not the AD or University president.

As an alumnus would this embarrass me about my school?...no, not really.

Bo covering up for Anderson and the sex scandal is actually much more embarrassing at an institutional level imo and an indictment of the culture and systemic failures of the AD, rather than having a reckless sleazy coach.

That said, Urbz did manage to enable a sociopathic murderer at UF (despite Tebow led bible study groups), so OSU knew the exact faustian bargain they were making.

All that said, watching a scumbag like Urbz get caught on camera with a finger in the girl's ass after being so preachy, teaching "ethics" at OSU, and writing a book on faith and family is glorious.

Ethics 101 - "If you don't get caught, you did nothing wrong" - Urban Meyer

Indy, I'm with you. This is exactly why I've hated this guy for so long. The combination of self-righteousness and baldfaced lying just drives me crazy.

Listening to a guy prattle on year after year about "values" and "trust" and "integrity" is bad enough.  It's so much worse when coupled with incessant lying and a complete lack of principle in his personal and professional life.

Look, everyone is flawed, and everyone makes mistakes. I just don't believe it's worth a few wins to accept someone who's obviously and repeatedly a scumbag.

Nope. Not for me.

Meyer married his wife in 1986. Based on a quick Wikipedia hunt, his oldest child would have graduated from college around 2012 or 2013. Assuming a normal-ish postcollege track, his youngest grandchild was likely born no earlier than 2016.

So even if I believed him, Meyer's answer make things worse. Who the hell was in charge of a group of toddlers, preschoolers, or kindergartners while Meyer was off glad-handing?

I think it would be better if he didn't apologize.  He should have said "Yes, I talked to the team about it after talking with my family. You all saw the video. What I told them is private. What I can tell you is my personal life will never be a distraction again for this team. We're moving on and focusing on the next game."

Boy, I don't agree with this, JamieH. A very highly compensated employee in a very high-profile, high-visibility position has responsibilities that extend beyond the workplace.

This guy is supposed to be a leader of men and an example to his players. He's literally the face of a billion-dollar franchise.

He certainly owes his boss an apology for failing to live up to the standards expected of anyone in his position. He owes his players an apology for the distraction and failure of leadership.

I swear to God this poor guy is constantly being taken advantage of. He was just trying to be a good servant to the community, his community and the next thing you know some young hot blonde is grinding on him. Was he supposed to be rude? Poor guy.
He should’ve said from behind she looked a lot like Trevor Lawrence and he was just trying to show him where you put your hands while under center. It would’ve been as believable as this apology.

I want to feel bad for him, and part of me does because you can see he's embarrassed.  I do give him credit for standing up there and being accountable.  But, at the same time I feel like he's been able to navigate several issues in the past that were less than ethical because he was able to hid at some previous stops so I feel like this is a bit of karma.
