Tell us your rain-soaked Big House experience this past weekend

The crowd was great on TV. How loud was it in person?

Any down in fronters?

Curious to know how many ND fans there were and if there were any encounters with them. Was most of that rain their tears?

First half was super rough with the downpour.

I was pretty close; there were a few ND fans by me, they seemed in good spirits and there weren't any issues.

I basically just yelled at O'Neill from pre game to the end of the game.

To say that we were wet, well...that was an incredible understatement. Our rain gear seemed to break down at around halftime (I know now that my jacket is NOT waterproof, only water RESISTANT -- BIG DIFFERENCE!), but the results on the field made it so much more tolerable. Funny how that works, eh?

When the crowd began to thin out a little, some annoying Domers worked their way down to the row right behind us, and started chirping loudly after ND's first TD (the one after the PI gift), to make it 17-7. I looked behind me after Michigan put up the answering score, and one of them had buried his head inside his poncho. After Nico grabbed a beautiful pass by Patterson to put Michigan up 31-7, we were truly satisfied, and ready to depart ourselves -- we were soaked to the bone and a 4+ hour drive back home awaited us. While passing by the row behind us, one of the Domer fans in this group, a guy in his 50s (the other three all appeared to be college-aged), stared at me and said, "Where the fuck are YOU going?" I couldn't let this aggression stand, and so I said, "Dude, I'm leaving. The game's over." His response? "There's 10 minutes left; it ain't over til it's over! We're gonna come back on your ass!" I chortled, glanced up at the scoreboard, and back at him, and said, "Good luck with that. See you in 2033. If you're alive then," and then turned back up the stadium steps.

I thought I heard something in response, but I was rather basking in the glow of the warm and smug self-satisfaction that can only come with an absolutely dominating win over a long-hated rival.

I loved how it took everyone about 20 minutes after the rain stopped briefly in the 3rd quarter for everyone (myself included) to go: "Hey, the rain stopped. Sweet."

Flew in from the east coast, wore 4 layers including a poncho that only allowed me to see through a small window because the rain was blowing at us.  Notre Dame fan in front of us was a chatty Cathy who cited "luck of the Irish" early in the game to the whole section.  He shut up pretty quickly, we sang all night. Flew back yesterday morning with a smile on my face. 10/10 would do again.

Only get to a game a year for the last 20 years given that I live in MD.  This was probably my favorite crowd, and Game Day experience in the last 20 years (I was at last year's PSU blowout too at home), and I'd attribute it to the witches brew of ND hatred and the "true football weather" ginning up passions among the M faithful to extremely high levels.

When O'Neill and crew called the phantom PI that led to an ND touchdown, the crowd, particularly the students, went batshit and started heaving the maize towels onto the field.  Even when PA announcer asked them twice to stop.  Don't blame the fans at all.  Call was BS.

Anger from the crowd seemed to elevate the passion of The Team, leading to 28 straight points, with Passionate Jimmy leading the charge.  Still reveling in it

I very much enjoyed the "Crowd Induced False Starts" count that they displayed on the scoreboard.  Got a loud(er) reaction every time.

And the "Who'll Stop the Rain?" singalong was joyous.  DJ was on point.

I brought my 11-year old son to the game. He said this was by far his best experience at any game he's attended (we have season tickets, so he's been to quite a few). We wore rain gear and multiple layers of clothes, so I never felt cold. My son has glasses, so they kept fogging up which was probably the biggest issue.

Everyone around us stood the entire game, and it was definitely loud in our section. I saw quite a few Notre Dame fans, but I didn't see any major interactions between the fan bases. They were pretty quiet once the game got underway for obvious reasons. A few "Let's go Irish" chants in the concourse before the game, but nothing hostile.

I watched a recording of the broadcast, and it undersold the experience. The crowd noise, towel-throwing, and booing the refs were amplified in person. I have never heard the refs booed for that long. It went on during every break in the action for a while, and the towel throwing went on longer too. They had some stadium staff standing in front of the refs on the next review to make sure they didn't get hit.

It was an absolute blast.

we wore light chest waders.  very comfortable, easy to walk miles in. the weather was a non-factor.  highly recommend for anyone who is going to tailgate for hours and then sit in the rain for a few more hours.  felt very sorry for the denim wearers that were everywhere.

only heard a tiny bit of ND cheering, squelched out before the first half was over.  none after that, even with their stolen TD.

got home at 0230 hrs and was still smiling that many hours after the game.  got a picture of one of my sons riding the ND exercise bike on the field right before kickoff - shared it with a couple of mgoblog lurkers.  too funny.

unbelievably, scanner blue actually took the time to search us out in the stadium during the monsoon.  thank you SB, very good to see you.  we scored when he showed up so he gets the credit for putting us up 17-0.

I had a ball.  Once it stopped raining and they scored I looked up in the sky and begged for MORE RAIN!  I still don’t have my voice but it was better than the two previous UNDER THE LIGHTS against ND because we kicked their individual butts!!!

I found out that my pullover was NOT waterproof. Insufficient due diligence on that one ... thank goodness it wasn't cold.

I thought the atmosphere was great. I stood up maybe twice as much as usual, which was fine.

My experiences with ND fans (at games, professionally, socially) have, believe it or not, been almost entirely good. I find them to be more civilized than our fans to be honest.

Not one Down in Front heard all game (section 1) by me...that has never happened before.

Rain gear held up pretty well, I would say "damp" but not wet. I sold my tickets after my Dad bailed and decided to pick up a last minute ticket at around 5:30pm which Mrs Skurnie said "was an idiotic and completely predictable decision".

My only complaint was 60% of the student section not coming back after halftime. I get it, but come on it's Notre Dame UTL! And it barely rained in the second half.

The best part of the whole game was that all the Irish fans left the stadium with about 6 minutes to go in the 3rd quarter.

The wind was swirling the rain around the whole bowl, and at half time my wife went up and if the rain didn't quit she was going back to the car to wait for me. The suddenly the rain stopped and my wife once again appeared next to me as we watched the Irish getting wrung out like a wet towel.

Great Game Awesome atmosphere despite the weather. Great time was had by all.

Arrived at 6 a.m. left at 12:30 a.m. Sunday morning I watched all the early games went in to the stadium got soaked and enjoy the hell out of it. The stadium was full and loud the only ones that left early were the students. My ears were still ringing last night.

Hats off to Michigan fans for showing up in that weather and once again proving that we are the best fans in the state of Michigan. Even at the end of the game there were more in the Big House then there was at the beginning of the Michigan State game.

Flew in from California with my 9-year-old son for the game, something we do once a year.  We sat in Section 44, and I was impressed that everyone around us (a lot of older fans) stood the entire time, excluding media stoppages.  There were a couple of Notre Dame fans, and while they cheered loudly during the early part of the game, they weren't in any way disruptive or rude. They were also fairly quiet after that punt block.

On the down side, this was the first time my son didn't make it through the whole game, he was just too uncomfortable.  I think he would have toughed it out if the game was closer (he managed to make it through the entire 2017 MSU game), but he said he regretted leaving once the rain had stopped.  Of course that sentiment was expressed from Grandma's house while sipping hot chocolate and after getting into dry clothes, so I'm not sure how accurate it is.

I took a friend who is a ND fan and he was amazed at how loud it was.  I would agree that it was as loud/louder than I am accustomed to.

Stayed dry during tailgating at Pioneer, but holy shit was it a swamp after the game.

I was completely soaked from neck to toe during the game once we were politely asked to sit down.  The rain gear I had was fine, but the wind would drive the rain inside my hood or inside my sleeves and ultimately drip down my entire body.  Being wet for several hours was worth witnessing the beat down in the raucous atmosphere.   Wasn't worth it to my ND friend though!  Ha Ha.

I can tell you mine from 1989, a loss to Notre Dame featuring the debut of Elvis Grbac (Michael Taylor injury) and two kickoff return TD’s by Rocket Ismail. Bo second guessed himself after that game.

I had/have a heavy duty cold.  Outside at 9am for my daughter's lax scrimmages with temps in the upper 30s.  Fast forward to afternoon, it was 100 degrees inside Conor O'Neill's and I didn't feel like drinking.  My cheap Meijer rain suit I bought before leaving literally tore apart as I was putting it on.  I got really wet walking to, and at, the game.  Picked up a discarded poncho off the street to prevent full saturation.  Up early Sunday morning to sit outside in more rain and wind for my daughter's lax tournament.  Totally exhausted Sunday night.

It was great, mostly. It was nice in that we were not packed like sardines due to the rain but still a big crown. Had some ND asshole who moved next to me after halftime and was all pumped about their first score, called Shea names, etc. Thankfully he left after the full beatdown commenced.

It certainly was not as bad as some other games weather wise. It was not especially cold and even the rain was not that hard. It was a good game.

You're lucky.  The worst part of the game for me was early in the first.  I had Michigan fans with a clear lack of understanding of football in front of me that were calling Shea names.  So darn irritating!!!  As the game continued I made it a point to yell extra loud after Shea's good plays.

Amazing game other than that with a great atmosphere.  Wet or not, it was awesome!!!

My cousin's poncho ripped sitting down after the anthem and kept getting worse during the half. Had a sweatshirt underneath that ended up being soaked at halftime.

During halftime, there were still giveaway towels outside our portal left, so he decided to grab a bunch and made an inner towel layer in his sweaters hood, and put two towels in his shoes to try to stop sock absorption. Ended up working for him enough to the 4th where the rain stopped.

Michigan destroying the Irish of course made all that worth it to him.

I debated going as I'm old but I'm glad I went because it was fucking awesome. I almost got into a fight with some random ND fan who was leaving in the fourth quarter, 10/10 would do it again

it was crazy cold, crazy wet, and (it seemed) crazy loud.

i was walking up the steps at halftime and realized that my knees were killing me...because i don't think we sat for more than a couple plays for the entire first half.  so no 'down in fronters' in section 21.

it thinned out at halftime...but that was it.  seemed like just about everyone who stuck through halftime stayed to the very end.

It was an absolute blast.  The crowd was into it, although some U-M fans did leave in the 2nd half.

The loud ND guy next to me got quiet by the middle of the first quarter and left early in the 2nd quarter when U-M went up 10-0.

My son and I got into town early and tailgated in the shelter of the Thompson St garage.  We dressed appropriately with layers and rain suits to make sure we were comfortable and could enjoy the game.  We stood most of the time but I took a few breaks to rest my torn meniscus. The crowd was loud and electric but I don’t know if was louder than other big games I’ve been to in my 40+ years. We stayed a while after the curb stomping was complete and soaked up the win.  Bonus was a high five from Desmond as he exited past us through section 21.

I dressed for the rain, stayed pretty dry and never got cold. The crowd was pretty loud and into the game the entire night yet far from the loudest I have experienced.

The one thing that pissed me off is they have added a bunch of speakers on the east side of the stadium and the sound was out of sync and too loud. I always felt sorry for those who had to put up with the speakers in the north end zone. Now they subjecting the loud noise to more of us. Next game I'm might add some ear protection.

Ended up giving my tickets to my son and his friend.  Sat at home, warm and dry in front of a big screen tv.  While I miss the energy of the stadium, there is a big hassle factor involved in going to games.  And the cost of that hassle factor has been steadily rising relative to the value of attending.  So, I'm thinking strongly about making the stay at home strategy permanent.

October 28th, 2019 at 4:19 PM ^

All in all it was a good day.  Yeah the weather sucked but we knew it would so we were well prepared.  Had enough layers to not get cold and solid rain gear so we didn't get wet.  That's with getting there at 11, tailgating until 5:30 then heading into the stadium for some munchies before the game, then staying until the band finished playing the alma mater/Victors combo after the game.

In section 19 was SRO - anyone that wanted to sit down could but there were none of the DIF folks.  We did almost have a fight break out in front of us due to a somewhat drunk, definitely pissed off ND fan not liking that none of us around him gave a damn about his team.  It was quite loud too which was to be expected considering the opponent and it being a night game where we'd all had a good solid day of tailgating behind us.

The crazy part though was going back to Pioneer and seeing the carnage out there.  Saw more mangled canopy frames at one time than I ever have there.  Between that and the stuff strewn everywhere the comment we'd tossed about most was "it looked like a tornado hit here".

What's Good Fo…

October 28th, 2019 at 4:42 PM ^

The crowd was loud for almost the whole game. Hours of sustained yelling. Plus everyone stood for the entire game--every play--which is a first for me there (Sec. 22). Usually, it's a "stand up a few times a game" kind of place and I go with that flow. Literally zero plays where folks sat down. So that was awesome--the energy was really something. There were two Domer fans next to me who were cheering quietly and politely the whole game.

I would have been miserable if I had been wet, but my cheap rain suit from Meijer held out perfectly. I was dry as a bone at the end of the game.

I got hit upside the head by a thrown towel and it was a lot heavier than I would have thought. Not like getting hit by a rock, but I got a good thump. Totally worth it. One of the best games I've been to as an alum.

When I was in high school I was fortunate enough to get a ticket to the 1989 ND-Michigan opener. They were ranked #1 and we were #2. That was a rainy day too. I thought we were going to win until ND's Rocket Ismail ran back that second kickoff for a TD. Huge gulf between how fun it is to sit through a rainy win and how miserable it feels to sit through a rainy game and lose like that.
