Is Sherrone Moore going to be David Shaw 2.0?

Submitted by Reno Drew on January 25th, 2024 at 10:26 AM

Full Disclosure- I'd love to have Coach Moore take over as HC.  I've also been a David Shaw fan, in part, because he went to high school with my brother at Rochester Adams.

If Michigan goes with Coach Moore, I started last night about what Michigan could learn from Shaw's run at Stanford.  It's a similar situation- popular OC takes over as Harbaugh goes to the pros.  Shaw did have the advantage of having Andrew Luck at QB  for his first season as HC while Michigan's coach next year will be starting over from scratch.

Shaw had 8  winning season, 3 Pac 10 Championships and was 4 x Pac 10 coach of the year before the wheels fell off the program.  Watching his teams at their peak, they still had that "Harbaugh edge" to them.   I'm not entirely sure what happened to their program but it sounds like the combination of high academic standards and Stanford not being quite as up to date on the changing landscape in recruiting did him in.

We had the best coach in all of college football. We now have the 5th? best in the BIG ten. And that’s being nice. I sincerely hope he makes me eat my words

Can’t compare his tenure to Harbaugh as it’s a totally different landscape. With the portal, NIL, and essentially unlimited free agency it’s a totally different world.

15-0 is a remarkable historical achievement; it will be highly difficult to replicate an undefeated season in any level given the expansion of conference play and addition of some real traditional powers. The eventual champion will probably regularly feature 1-2 losses. It’s what made this year so special—the last of its kind among traditional collegiate interplay.
We’ll always have the final play of Saban’s career be a goal line stand.
can’t wait to see that center again in November.
it’s a very easy scenario to see a low scoring game between two great defenses and some trouble with the snaps ending Ryan Day’s tenure in Columbus.
at this point, anything here on out is gravy. We just climbed the damn mountain. Can’t take that joy away.

My biggest concern is that Sherrone gets the appropriate support he needs.  Harbaugh's staff had an exceptional run of getting in on lower rated players that were actually very good and "coached them up" to get exceptional results. He also utilized the transfer portal to bring in some exceptional players.

We have to figure a way to compete financially upfront in recruiting, as well as the transfer portal since that has now changed with NIL money as well.  Admissions has to be fixed so that those that should be allowed can get in without any issues in timing or ease.  If not we will falter and be left behind.

An idea just came to mind.  Other teams have hired "veterans" that have been in college / professional football to be analysts for their teams.   Nick Saban was probably one of the most notable to do that.

Perhaps there are a few dollars available in the budget to - Hire Shaw as an analyst for Michigan / Moore.

Biff Poggi was a muse for Jim - and, IMO, deserves some credit for the change over the past few years.   Maybe Shaw could compliment Moore in the same way.

A different but related question is how much support will Jim and the Harbaughs give to Sherrone and UM in the future. The family connections, the NFL connections, were obviously a huge help to Jim. I don’t know to what extent he did or did not support Shaw at Stanford, but UM is special in terms of Jim’s and the other Harbaughs’ connections to the school/program. It could be a huge help

Not sure what all the negs are for here. I'd be pretty happy with David Shaw 2.0. There are very few coaches that have a Nick Saban career trajectory where they can stay in a job as long as they'd like. That's why they're legends. Even Bill Parcells and Bill Belichick were run out of town. Coaches have a shelf life. If Sherrone Moore takes over and gives us 5-7 excellent years and then the wheels come off... well, that's just the way this usually goes.

Part of what happened to Shaw is the limitations that come with Stanford, in terms of the admissions restrictions and transfer limitations that put Michigan's to shame. Another is that without a transcendent running back/OL misses, they just sort of dropped off. Luck was downgraded to Kevin Hogan, who was downgraded to KJ Costello, and CMC went to Bryce Love (a fine college back) to no one of consequence. They also weren't getting two five star OLs per class and actually doing something with them.

Probably what happened is that they were Stanford.

One thing Shaw didn't have is head coach victories over, say USC and Oregon, before he took over the program

David Shaw is one the most conservative coaches in modern day football. Sherrone Moore has already proved to be more aggressive by going for it on 4th down multiple times against Ohio St. So the comparison is already a lazy one.
