My wife is a nurse in the PICU at Mott. Her name is Ashley, a blonde. If she is taking care of your son, he's in good hands, she's an awesome nurse. All of those nurses and doctors are incredible. Speedy recovery to your son.

I'm a dentist in the Ann Arbor area. It always amazes me how different patients are from one another. Some patients love the ultrasonic and want it used every time. Others only want hand scaling. The ultrasonic definitely does a much better job, and allows dental professionals to get the job done faster. If someone has a ton of tartar and stain, the ultrasonic is a no brainer and hand scaling likely will not be able to get all of the tartar and stain off. But, if I had a patient who was going to leave if I used the ultrasonic, I would listen to their wishes and only hand scale - as long as they were ok with not getting as good of a service from my office. Most offices are currently not using it because of Covid, and the aerosols that it creates to do its job. Just be up front with your concerns and any half way decent dentist should abide by your wishes and do what you ask - as long as you are ok with getting non ideal treatment. Another option - I have some patients who request getting all of their teeth numbed up before a cleaning. They do it every time. There is also topical anesthetic which will help numb the gums, but not the teeth. Depending on what is sensitive for you this might also be an option. Just ask!
