Oh boy just what Detroit needs - more hot dog places.

Seriously though would you believe there are ZERO coney dog shops here in northern Ohio?  I mean none and no, please dont try and tell me fucking Skyline Chili counts cause that's worse than the dog's throw up.  In metro Detroit you cant hit a 7 iron without landing near a coney shop and I'm 99% sure it's state law that every strip plaza has at least one if not two on premises.

But just a few short miles to the south they dont exist.  I dont get it - i'll bet if somebody opened one up here they'd make a killing, one coney at a time.

Actually, get the Combo which is a grilled polish sausage and Italian beef.  Add some hot peppers to it and you are in heaven.  Total gut bomb, but worth the effort.

A Detroit Coney Island restaurant (can't remember which one) opened a location in Chicago on the near northwest side.  Being from Michigan, the wife and I went there a few times because we miss coney dogs.  It went out of business after a year or two.  Portillo's has a monopoly on the Chicago market.

yep. i visited that coney shot on southport a few times. i thought it would succeed with all the michigan folks here.  i don't know what happened, but the place had a liquor license.  imo, that was an unneeded expense.  who is going to go there to drink with all the other bars in that neighborhood?

Sorry. I know I’m a homer, but Chicago style pizza is head and shoulders better than NYC slice shite. 99% of the pizza slices in NYC have been sitting on a metal tray for about 5 hours only to be resurrected like the bride of Frankenstein by putting it in the oven for a couple mins. It tastes noticeably old. And I’ve been to all the “best” places my NYC friends take me to (ie Johnnys)

I will say NYC slice pizza is good drink food though.

When my son was around 13, I got Portillo's Italian beef for his entire baseball team. It came with a 64 oz. bucket of the beef jus for dipping. Could have eaten that with a spoon, although I will tell you there was a disk of solidified beef fat on the top that was a little alarming.

Portillos is amazing! The Italian beef, hotdogs (not even the Chicago style), cheeseburgers and even the shakes and cake are all great. Especially when you mix the cake and the shake together. Portillos as well as Lou Manati’s are two places that I would have a hard time giving up and a reason I can’t leave here

Portillos is more than just dogs.  The Italian Beef is good (definitely not Chicago’s best), especially for a drive through and convenient location.  My favorite Portillos is at Memorial Stadium in Champagne...very convenient next to a craft beer booth!!!!
