Try Perry’s Deli. (Now located inside the Bacci Pizza on Franklin). It’s got a very focused deli menu (maybe 15-20 sandwiches), but they all great. They are also all bigger than the Zingerman counterpart at about the same price.
Also, Once Upon a Bagel in Highland Park will get you close to what Zingermans was in the 1990s.

Used to go to Perry’s a lot when it was on Franklin(?). The sandwiches were great and the trivia was a nice diversion. And NO CELL PHONES. Granted, that was 20 years ago. Doubt it would still fly. Haven’t been to the new location

They got priced out of their original location on Franklin and moved just down the street maybe five spots on Franklin. They have a small part of the Bacci Pizza place. Same menu and quality though.

Horrible burgers pretty good roast beef sandwiches.

Interesting, I was logging in to say the exact opposite. Big fan of their cheeseburger and it’s been consistent across visits to locations in multiple states.
Generally speaking, Portillo’s does a good job with “fast food”. They seem to use fresh ingredients across the menu.

That is amazing. Love Portillos!

Meh. I prefer Al’s.
But Portillos is solid. True story, the Portillos in Tempe is next to an In-n-out. Portillos gets way more traffic.

Angelo's in Flint. My grandparents used to take my brother and me there 50 years ago when we were kids visiting them. Amazed they are still open.

Unless it has a Bernelli's at each location, just go ahead and pass.

We’ve always gone for the ribs when in the Chicagoland area and my sister who lives there, regularly gives my son jars of sauce for Christmas and birthdays.
