OT - Portillo's coming to Michigan
February 19th, 2020 at 3:37 PM ^
Oh boy just what Detroit needs - more hot dog places.
Seriously though would you believe there are ZERO coney dog shops here in northern Ohio? I mean none and no, please dont try and tell me fucking Skyline Chili counts cause that's worse than the dog's throw up. In metro Detroit you cant hit a 7 iron without landing near a coney shop and I'm 99% sure it's state law that every strip plaza has at least one if not two on premises.
But just a few short miles to the south they dont exist. I dont get it - i'll bet if somebody opened one up here they'd make a killing, one coney at a time.
February 19th, 2020 at 3:39 PM ^
All of this is true, but coneys and hotdogs aren't the same thing.
February 19th, 2020 at 3:45 PM ^
And while it is also true that hot dogs and coney's arent the same thing they sure feature some on their very yummy looking hot dog menu
https://www.portillos.com/menu/restaurant/hot-dogs-and-chili/
You can definitely order one there. Or do hot dogs with chili not count as a coney?
February 19th, 2020 at 4:57 PM ^
And a Chicago is a hell of a lot different than a coney or a plain. It’s like a hot dog in a sandwich. Used to be a great stand in downtown Kzoo that served a great Chicago dog. The Sonic version is gross.
February 19th, 2020 at 11:21 PM ^
Hippo's in Troy serves an authentic - and damn tasty - Chicago dog.
February 19th, 2020 at 3:54 PM ^
You also get Italian beef
February 19th, 2020 at 4:15 PM ^
EXACTLY. Don't order a hot dog from Portillo's. Order an Italian beef, dipped.
February 19th, 2020 at 4:20 PM ^
Actually, get the Combo which is a grilled polish sausage and Italian beef. Add some hot peppers to it and you are in heaven. Total gut bomb, but worth the effort.
A Detroit Coney Island restaurant (can't remember which one) opened a location in Chicago on the near northwest side. Being from Michigan, the wife and I went there a few times because we miss coney dogs. It went out of business after a year or two. Portillo's has a monopoly on the Chicago market.
February 19th, 2020 at 5:38 PM ^
yep. i visited that coney shot on southport a few times. i thought it would succeed with all the michigan folks here. i don't know what happened, but the place had a liquor license. imo, that was an unneeded expense. who is going to go there to drink with all the other bars in that neighborhood?
February 19th, 2020 at 4:39 PM ^
Don’t forget the giardiniera
February 19th, 2020 at 6:39 PM ^
With hot peppers, tamale on the side
February 19th, 2020 at 8:11 PM ^
Portillo’s was a fun place. Unique. Nothing like it here in Detroit. Wish it was closer. Nice cater options too.
February 20th, 2020 at 5:17 PM ^
Italian Beef with a chocolate cake shake is a move. The chopped salad with chicken is awesome, they have great burgers too. Portillos is the place i make all of my out of town friends visit when theyre in chicago.

You don't consider Tony Packo’s a dog shop?
February 19th, 2020 at 5:00 PM ^
No Tony Packos is definitely a dog shop. I just dont consider Toledo part of Ohio. That's just a suburb of Monroe.
February 19th, 2020 at 4:43 PM ^
Why the Skyline hate? Are you a Gold Star guy? Or is it just a Cincy thing that doesn’t translate to Northern tastes?
February 19th, 2020 at 5:13 PM ^
Edited: should have read all comments before posting Tony Paco's... Idiot
February 19th, 2020 at 5:47 PM ^
Hot Dog Shoppe in Warren Ohio - just don't take any wrong turns on your way there unless you have a death wish
February 20th, 2020 at 10:33 AM ^
I live in Boardman. I'll check this Hot Dog Shoppe in Warren out.
February 19th, 2020 at 8:02 PM ^
We've had Portillo's in Scottsdale for over many years.
February 19th, 2020 at 3:39 PM ^
There's no place like Packos
There's no place like Packos

Toledo doesnt count

Got any coney places closer than 120 miles from here?
February 19th, 2020 at 7:03 PM ^
Hot Dog Heaven. Amherst.
February 19th, 2020 at 3:39 PM ^
Lafayette or American - Who ya got?
Or or or... Yesterdog in GR?
February 19th, 2020 at 4:45 PM ^
Lafayette, hand's down.
February 19th, 2020 at 5:24 PM ^
Lafayette... They are miles apart.
February 19th, 2020 at 3:42 PM ^
can he (or she) play DT?
February 19th, 2020 at 3:48 PM ^
Chicago dogs are straight-up gross, IMO.
February 19th, 2020 at 3:51 PM ^
As a native NYer, I have come to really enjoy Chicago-style hotdogs. Pizza is an entirely different matter, though...
February 19th, 2020 at 9:34 PM ^
Sorry. I know I’m a homer, but Chicago style pizza is head and shoulders better than NYC slice shite. 99% of the pizza slices in NYC have been sitting on a metal tray for about 5 hours only to be resurrected like the bride of Frankenstein by putting it in the oven for a couple mins. It tastes noticeably old. And I’ve been to all the “best” places my NYC friends take me to (ie Johnnys)
I will say NYC slice pizza is good drink food though.
February 19th, 2020 at 4:01 PM ^
I tried one at Red Hot Lovers back in the day. I prefer chili dogs.
February 19th, 2020 at 3:51 PM ^
Portillo’s is also Italian beef sandwiches.
OMG, to die for ...
February 19th, 2020 at 3:55 PM ^
Gotta combo that with an Italian sausage on the bun. This may be why I can’t eat portillos for lunch - always feel like I need a nap after.
February 19th, 2020 at 5:53 PM ^
When my son was around 13, I got Portillo's Italian beef for his entire baseball team. It came with a 64 oz. bucket of the beef jus for dipping. Could have eaten that with a spoon, although I will tell you there was a disk of solidified beef fat on the top that was a little alarming.
February 19th, 2020 at 4:00 PM ^
Screw Portillos. I want a Wawa.
February 19th, 2020 at 4:16 PM ^
Portillo's also has excellent Polish sausage and Italian beef.
February 19th, 2020 at 4:17 PM ^
Portillos is amazing! The Italian beef, hotdogs (not even the Chicago style), cheeseburgers and even the shakes and cake are all great. Especially when you mix the cake and the shake together. Portillos as well as Lou Manati’s are two places that I would have a hard time giving up and a reason I can’t leave here
February 19th, 2020 at 4:28 PM ^
Two things not mentioned here: the chopped salad and the chocolate cake. Trust me on this.
February 19th, 2020 at 4:43 PM ^
We got one in central Indiana. Not being a Chicagoland native, I just don’t get the hype.
February 19th, 2020 at 4:57 PM ^
Portillos is more than just dogs. The Italian Beef is good (definitely not Chicago’s best), especially for a drive through and convenient location. My favorite Portillos is at Memorial Stadium in Champagne...very convenient next to a craft beer booth!!!!
February 19th, 2020 at 5:28 PM ^
You are right about the Italian Beef being good but not the best. Al's is the place to go for a good beef sandwich.
February 19th, 2020 at 6:42 PM ^
Used to walk to an Al’s from work. The best.
February 19th, 2020 at 5:02 PM ^
I'm a strict Polock Johnny's guy
February 19th, 2020 at 5:02 PM ^
Never been there but will have to go and bring some ketchup with me just to watch the whole world burn!
Coney dogs for life!
February 19th, 2020 at 6:27 PM ^
Shut your whore mouth!
February 19th, 2020 at 7:11 PM ^
Portillos is about the Italian Beef, as posted above.
February 19th, 2020 at 5:15 PM ^
One of the things I miss about NW Indiana and Chicago is Portillo's - glad they are coming to MI.
February 19th, 2020 at 5:20 PM ^
This "Portillo" ---5* or underscouted 3* sleeper?
Can he play interior DL?
February 19th, 2020 at 5:34 PM ^
i am just happy that one is opening on the northside about a mile or so from my house. giddy up!!
