OT: Duke misses tournament and still could sign the number 1 recruiting class for 2021
It’s just ridiculous. They have gotten the 3,7 and now 20th ranked player (Keels) and are top 2 with Wisconsin-Milwaukee for Patrick Baldwin Jr who is number 4 in the nation. How in the hell do you keep doing this when you just clearly showed recruits that you can’t win with all new freshmen? They had all that talent like UK and neither of them even made the tournament. I don’t get it.
We missed the tournament in 1991 and signed the Fab Five.
Michigan football went 2-4 and signed a top 10 class.
Maybe recruits don’t live and die with each game like fans do?
Some of the Fab 5 were being paid to go to Michigan and Michigan football didn’t sign a bunch of top 10 kids in football either. Bama and OSU would be better examples for football.
Not one single member of the Fab 5 was “paid to go to Michigan.” Not one.
Thank you!
This is the comment of a person that knows nothing about Michigan's basketball history, and doesn't care one bit either way.
Are you even a Michigan fan?
If you want to call yourself a Michigan fan, you should study up on Michigan history. Even per the official NCAA report, Michigan's sanctions were due to Chris Webber receiving illegal benefits (i.e. he was ineligible) but explicitly not in a pay for play scenario to attend Michigan (i.e. he received those benefits for his own future earnings potential, not to go to Michigan). It is well known that Ed Martin was also providing benefits to athletes that attended Minnesota, Michigan State, Syracuse, and other schools. Also, no other Fab Five members were implicated in the report. And, mind you, this is a report that was made with the full cooperation of the university and the subpoena power of the FBI as part of Ed Martin's prosecution...this isn't the NCAA being unable to prove that money changed hands because the university stonewalled and nobody left a paper trail like is typical today.
That would be Voshon Leonard, Steve Smith, Derrick Coleman.
Trolliest of comments (and ill-informed).
This is a two flusher. Spray some Glade on your way out dude.
Take my downvote you scoundrel, I have but one to give
Everyone picked apart the first sentence of this post let me go after the second. The original question posed was how does a team that is struggling and coming off of a poor season sign a top rated recruiting class. OSU and Alabama are both coming off of dominant season after dominant season. It is literally the worst example you could make for this instance.
I’ll pile on here just to underscore how much of a dumbass you are...
I almost WISH the Fab 5 were paid to go to Michigan, because then at least it would lend a little sense to Michigan’s decision to fall on their sword. But they they didn’t, and Michigan will go down in history as the last major sports program to willfully punish themselves in excess of what was mandated by that clown-show we call the NCAA.
Notwithstanding the fact they are easily a top 10 program of all time—Michigan was THE premiere program in the entire Midwest and arguably the entire country in the late 80s and early 90s. They won 154 games in 6 seasons from 1984-1989, including back to back Big Ten titles in 85 and 86. They of course won the whole thing in 89. 1989 also happened to be the year that Chris Webber and Jalen Rose were top flight high school sophomores getting ready to decide where to attend college. Ed Martin had nurtured relationships with athletes from Rose’s Detroit Southwestern since the early 80s. He was buddying up to Webber when the kid was in 8th grade even though Webber spurned SW for Country Day. Martin was obviously giving all the kids perks, but the thing is... he had no a priori connection to U of M. In 89 Martin convinced a SW kid to go to Boston College despite the SW coach favoring Kent State. Michigan recruited Rose and Webber because they were two top 5 players in the entire country and Michigan was (and is) an elite program. Ed Martin was an awkward nuisance and everyone knew it was unwise to spurn the guy. Now could Michigan have been more vigilant and more holier than thou through all of it? Sure. But to be honest, Fischer was just playing by rules that look outright puritanical compared to what guys like Calipari and Krzyzewski do today. Looking back, the Fab 5 scandal was a nothingball driven mainly by Michigan arrogance and dare I say a tinge of overt racism. And with DraftKings today being valued in the billions, I’m inclined to go so far as to say Ed Martin did nothing wrong.
Amen Brother!
I am incongruously pround to have given this comment the 100th dislike.
Logged in to neg. it takes a truly bad post to make me do that. Nice work.
It's Duke. They may have had a bad season but they're still Duke and they're still headed by Coach K. That holds a lot of weight
Who cares? How many championships have they won since they fully committed to the one-and-done model?? Build a TEAM and develop it.
I get that part and I don’t want all one and done either but we just made the elite 8 and didn’t miss the tournament entirely. It just surprises me how they can continue to convince kids to go there when they don’t win shit.
Dude they have 5 national championships since we last won one. They have 2 championships in the last 10 years, same amount of final fours we have.
This year notwithstanding, to say Duke has won nothing is.....well, I would advise you to watch more basketball on Earth from time to time, because clearly watching basketball on Tau Ceti V isn't working. I mean, you are aware that Duke has won the whole thing five times, been the runner-up six more times, and been as far as the Final Four another 14 times beyond that (and this is just a portion of their tournament pedigree), correct? I don't like them either, and when Duke loses, America wins, but give them a little credit for having built a pretty damn big brand.
Ignoring the fact that Duke absolutely DOES “win shit” and one bad year doesn’t take away from that;
Did it ever occur to you that kids who are only looking to spend a year, two max, in college don’t give a rats ass if they “win shit” or not? You think they might be interested in increasing their own exposure and own brand? You think they might realize that a program like Duke is going to put you in the spotlight whether the team is competing for a national championship or not?
Winning championships is nice and all, but it’s a bonus. These kids have NBA aspirations. And playing at a program like Duke and playing for someone like Coach K is going to put you squarely on the radar of NBA teams.
Just off the top of my head:
- Zion Williamson
- Brandon Ingram
- Jayson Tatum
- Wendell Carter
- R. J. Barrett
- Cam Reddish
- Grayson Allen
- Tyus Jones
- Gary Trent Jr.
- Luke Kennard
All starters or serious rotation players in the Association and all getting paid. And that's just four or so years worth of drafts, I'm leaving out older guys like Plumlee and Rivers and Kyrie.
Everything else being equal, winning is better, but elite high school recruits would rather be the next Zion than the next Jack Salt.

Maybe a shorter way of saying this: I just looked it up on collegetracker and former Duke players made more than $650 million in the NBA this year. Kentucky's at over a billion, if you're wondering. Kentucky's got 29 players in the league, Duke has 25, nobody else has more than 13.
Just stop
Duke still a basketball power, thanks for the update
Duke has shown to churn 1-and-dones into top NBA draft picks.
Just because they have a bad year, one bad year, during a pandemic doesn't mean players are stupid enough to consider the program trash...
Just like Michigan football, people shouldn't rush to conclusions because one bad year.
Yeah they should wait until they’ve accumulated 20 years of meh on field performance before they say the program is trash
/ducks head
There are at least 24 former Duke players that have played in the NBA this season. What don't you get about that?
He can only count to 23
Where the hell have you been over the past 40 years? Because they have Coach K and their name! It’s DUKE fer gods sake as Brady would say. North Carolina will wind up probably hiring Pat Riley or another huge name because it’s NC-
Was Duke "Duke" before Coach K?
A quick glance at Wikipedia tells me they were pretty good, but certainly not the Duke we know. Kryzezewski has been there since 1980(!) so yeah, all of modern basketball really, since the 3-point line.
I'm pretty sure that Patrick Baldwin is a UWM lock since his dad is the head coach there. I'd be surprised if Duke can land him.
Let’s refer to Duke by their true name
the Gonzaga of the East
Doesn’t count. It’s a Covid year.
Signed,
RCMB
Did you think that after 1 bad year, Duke would just stop being Duke?
Coach Kruszczyheshesskyszki must be a really cool dude
We talk a lot about Izzo screaming at his players (I would not be able to play for him) but he is undeniably charming in his way and his players love him. Coach K has absolutely no charisma. It's purely transactional with him. He's made it work but it doesn't look fun. Duke doesn't play with much joy
Coach K has $old his $oul to one and done$
It isn't about winning for most of these young men...it's nice if it happens but they are figuring to be a lottery pick a year later and Coach K has shown many young men it is possible when they come to Duke.
It’s because they’re Duke.....
Its the same reason that Michigan can still go and sign top rated classes even when they lose to Ohio State. It’s because the name and the brand carry weight.
cuz they're duke
Coach K may look like Vlad the Impaler, but he, too, will move on in time.
Basketball, doesn’t make any sense. UK was piss poor as the recruits were overrated. Duke will be signing the 1 or 2 in the class. Kansas signs BS to a lifetime contract. Will wade, Self and Archie are still coaching even after a damning report/investigation and still making millions. It’s maddening and cheating pays to win most of the time

This post is ridiculous
WE HATE DOOK!
I'm guessing from the content of your post that you've been following sports for three, maybe four, months. Welcome to the tribe!
I don’t get it.
