OT: The Cleveland Indians are no longer
Maybe they'll be the CBT this year?
Cleveland’s Baseball Team Will Drop Its Indians Team Name https://nyti.ms/2Wb6EXF

That’s probably why the term “Indigenous People” or Indigenous Americans” has become the go-to.
The way people respond to certain terms is not monolithic. My wife, who is black, hates being called “African-American” and hates even more being called a “Person of Color.”
December 13th, 2020 at 9:11 PM ^
As long as you don't call her by the name of one of her friends, you're good... (totally kidding)
Individuals are individuals. I get trying to take offensive language out of common parlance, but pleasing a defined group, doesn't mean everyone in the group is happy. I think we, as a society, are tying to get to the right place, but we seem to spend too much time grouping and sub-grouping.
Anyway, another Sunday night and i'm working on a corporate financing event!!!! yeah!! so much fun.
December 13th, 2020 at 9:37 PM ^
You’re right! No monolith indeed! My wife is, who is a Hispanic immigrant, doesn’t like the term “person of color” either. And I thought she was the only one.

Why would they want to be referred to as Indian if they aren't from India?
December 13th, 2020 at 10:07 PM ^
I assume some people would want that because its what they've been called for centuries. But there's a lot of different tribes, wouldn't expect the English and French, for example, to agree on everything even tho they're generally white people.

Why would a team want to be called the Indians if they aren't from India?
EDIT: this is not replying to the comment I want it to reply to.

Steamers? Too obvious??
December 13th, 2020 at 8:48 PM ^
Correct choice.
December 13th, 2020 at 11:51 PM ^
The free market clearly decided it was the right choice or they would've kept it. The owners are in business after all. Not sure why everyone's freaking out here. You would think the world was ending.

Anti-PC police are here and are very offended
December 13th, 2020 at 8:49 PM ^
CMU Chippewas remain (shame about the EMU Hurons).
December 13th, 2020 at 9:03 PM ^
CMU has a good relationship with the Saginaw Chippewa Tribe.
December 13th, 2020 at 9:14 PM ^
So did North Dakota with the Sioux but it didn't matter
December 13th, 2020 at 9:36 PM ^
They were also the Fighting Sioux, had a logo and didn't get permission form the Sioux tribe to continue using the nickname. CMU did by changing their logo to a C rather than anything resembling a tribal image, removed racial stereotypes from University traditions ( like chants and drum beats) and used orientation to educate students on Saginaw Chippewa Tribe history.
December 13th, 2020 at 9:40 PM ^
Pretty sure the one Sioux tribe actually designed their logo. The other Sioux tribe would never vote on the name, and since they couldn't get approval from both the NCAA made them change it.
December 13th, 2020 at 9:49 PM ^
Agreed. That's my understanding too.
December 13th, 2020 at 8:51 PM ^
So overdue. Would like to see them bring back the spiders.
December 13th, 2020 at 8:51 PM ^
Next up: Fighting Irish
December 13th, 2020 at 8:54 PM ^
Honestly, that’s an offensive stereotype. But seriously, fuck the Irish.
December 13th, 2020 at 9:20 PM ^
Like fuck the Irish as in the Irish people. Or fuck the Irish as in Notre Dame?
the distinction is important.

Went to two games in the 2016 Series, including Game 7. Saw a number of fans in headresses and face paint, and that what pushed me over the top in favor of the change. Those idiots embarrassed themselves and probably gave national viewers a negative impression of my city.
Bring on the Spiders.
December 13th, 2020 at 9:31 PM ^
I don't know why you are being downvoted here. I'm really sorry you had to see that here.
The fragility from these comments are so obvious. Y'all crying about PC culture is so 2016, get with the time.
December 13th, 2020 at 9:49 PM ^
Change is scary and a good excuse to be outraged.
December 13th, 2020 at 9:55 PM ^
Eh, like everything else these days, opinions elicit strong reactions from both sides. Plus, I'm a Buckeye fan.
December 13th, 2020 at 11:35 PM ^
It is pretty amazing how many people are upset by a billionaire deciding the millionaires on his baseball team shouldn’t wear a name of group that, depending on the POV is anywhere from stereotypical to flat out racist, and is going to call it something else instead.
It makes me wonder how these people have gotten through life with so few worries or bad things happening to them that this is what really sets them off. Wish I was that lucky.
December 14th, 2020 at 2:06 AM ^
People that use “y’all” in 2020 to avoid being ‘sexist’ have no business casting stones about “fragility.”
It’s precisely fragility and lack of perspective about what matters that leads to these name changes.
December 14th, 2020 at 12:30 PM ^
uh, where I live it's either "y'all" or "all y'all"
we don't say "yooz guys" or whatever
December 13th, 2020 at 9:59 PM ^
Keep away from the Chiefs and Braves games if these things offend you so much. Seminoles too.
December 13th, 2020 at 11:09 PM ^
I've heard that Florida State has a good relationship with the Seminole nation who are generally cool with the name (probably getting a little kickback to help with that relationship).
As for Kansas City, if they ever change their name, it would probably be to the "Injins" just to spite the rest of the country. It's, uh, pretty red.
December 13th, 2020 at 9:01 PM ^
Thank goodness animals aren't offended or asking for a cut of money to use their names or we might say goodbye to teams named Lions, Tigers, Cardinals, Pelicans, Seahawks, Eagles, Coyotes, Penguins, Ducks, Falcons, Rams, Marlins, Bulls, Bears, and...........................yes, the Wolverines!
December 13th, 2020 at 9:05 PM ^
Give it time.
December 13th, 2020 at 9:11 PM ^
Everyone 'woke' today
December 13th, 2020 at 9:51 PM ^
Never underestimate a Karen's influence
December 13th, 2020 at 10:48 PM ^
Pretty sure the "Karen" stereotype is more in your camp, fella.
December 14th, 2020 at 10:44 AM ^
I demand to speak to your manager
December 13th, 2020 at 9:25 PM ^
If Lions only knew what a shitty team was using their names, they would probably rise up and eat everybody around them.
December 14th, 2020 at 10:10 AM ^
this is the whole problem...you essentially just compared a group of human beings to animals. Maybe that wasn't your intent but, that's what you did.
December 14th, 2020 at 12:21 PM ^
They don't care. They're on their slippery slope fallacy bullshit and are saying all of this in bad faith
December 13th, 2020 at 9:19 PM ^
Cleveland GrowOlds. Or, CGrowOld for short. Logo is picture picture of a hot wife that gets xed out next to a stick figure of said in shape mom which is also crossed out leaving a picture of some dude in glasses from the 1970s.
December 13th, 2020 at 9:34 PM ^
Damn, You remember my avatars better than I do.
And the "some dude" BTW is me, high school graduation pic from Cranbrook 1978.
December 13th, 2020 at 9:20 PM ^
I find Yankees very offensive being from Connecticut, originally. I live in the city, so Mets has to go too. We are a global society, so Nationals needs to go. Giants is offensive to short people, Padres is misappropriation of Spanish culture, Tigers are an endangered species, Rangers is supportive of Blue Lives Matter (that one I think is actually in the works), Royals promotes tyranny, Cardinals was probably the name of a racist group at some point, Reds is subliminal messaging for the Bolsheviks.
Can't we just use the city names?
December 13th, 2020 at 9:41 PM ^
Personally, I find Tigers offensive. They are endangered species and we don’t promote a team name that draws attention to their plight.
December 13th, 2020 at 9:35 PM ^
I think Indians is fine. Chief Wahoo was insanely bad, but they finally got rid of that a couple years ago.
December 13th, 2020 at 9:52 PM ^
The only reason it's fine is because it was 'fine' a century ago. Aside from tradition, it's got no appeal to anyone.
December 13th, 2020 at 9:38 PM ^
But what pronoun does the team want to be referred as?
Isn’t that how we play this sensitivity game these days?
