Native Americans have historically been flatly ignored, period, in this country. That's what I was getting at...

But...

I guess you'd rather believe some "poll" the Redskins organization released. Or Bill Maher (for some reason).

I can see where your opinions lie, and they’re quite biased. Native Americans have not been ignored flatly, period.  Have things been great for Native Americans? No.  Flatly ignored? No way.

In the context of this thread topic, we’ve changed countless teams names (100s, maybe even 1000s of names) precisely because we are listening to them.  Which is why the redskins name took so long to change.  They were mostly fine with it until recently. And that’s just the tip of iceberg.

... what? Get over yourself.

As Chris Rock so flatly joked - "When was the last time you met two Indians...? I have never seen an Indian family just chillin' at Red Lobster."

You'd think after all they've been through (and continue to go through) that throwing them this little bone wouldn't be a big deal but then here you come...

Great point and these so called liberals are being EXPOSED now and they should be. This includes the wealthy white liberal elites of academia as well. How many of them have left their plush homes in Ann Arbor to go to Detroit and volunteer their time helping kids learn to read? NONE!

I've volunteered in Detroit on many occasions. There was no one, and I mean no one, from wealthy liberal neighborhoods. Volunteers were mainly from working middle-lower class areas, some of whom might be called "deplorables."

I understand getting rid of Wahoo, but this....I don’t know.

I mean it’s their team, not mine, so my opinion on the matter is irrelevant. My only question, and I’m sure many other think this as well, is where does this end?

When do Christian fundamentalists descend on Newark and demand the Devils change their name to something not sac-religious? When do Viking descendants get offended by the Vikings? When are the Chiefs, Braves and Blackhawks going the way of the dodo, too?

Go back to the Spiders; that's a cool name and animal.  Merchandise sells itself.

I'll refrain from engaging in the incredibly thoughtful and earnest discussions going on about the degree to which Cleveland is bowing to faux political correctness and bootlicking in making this decision that has virtually no effect on anyone here except possibly needing to purchase some more memorabilia.

I’ve always been of the opinion that so long as a significant majority of indigenous people are cool with the name/logo or whatever then fine, keep it. Not sure if that was the case here. Now, Chief Wahoo can definitely understand why the organization decided to disassociate with that logo, that was pretty bad.

When you haven't won a WS since Bob Lemon and Lou Boudreau in '48 and you found a way to lose to the Cubs who hadn't won a WS since 1908 - this $hit happens

I mean the term Indians and red skins might be derogatory and should be changed but it still bothers me that they changed the teams with specific Indian tribe names. If that’s the case shouldn’t they change Celtics, Trojans, Spartans, Sooners, Hoosiers, and anything else that represents a group of human beings. Thank god were the Wolverines! Stupid really

Context is key. I think the issue people have isn’t that the names and imagery are representing groups of people in general, it’s the perceived disrespect and caracaturizing of historically oppressed groups of people in a country whose government has literally destroyed their cultures, and committed flat-out genocide against them. This would be be the case for “Viking” descendants, Spartans or whatever.

Now, whether you think that’s okay or not, i don’t really care. As far as actually using the names, I’ll refer to my above comment that so long as a large percentage of indigenous people are cool with it or don’t care, then keep it. I don’t think I as a white dude have the right to tell them to be offended by.

The team gave their fans a chance to possibly keep the Indians name when they said they were ditching the Chief Wahoo logo and told them to cool it on wearing it to the ballpark because it was a horribly offensive racist image.

Instead of seeing the team’s POV and agreeing it was the right thing to do, many of them threw a fucking shit fit and loudly proclaimed that they were going to continue to support that horribly offensive racist logo and wear it as much as they possibly could. So now the whole thing is gone.

Sorry CHIEF WAHOO LIVES! fans, assholes like you are why compromise doesn’t work and extreme measures have to be taken.

Because they can now say that’s not our team name anymore, we have rebuked it publicly and we will turn anyone away from the ballpark who is wearing any Indians merchandise.

Let me guess, you’re one of these “I BOUGHT THE DAMN TICKET I’LL WEAR WHAT I WANT! FREEDOM!” morons who is completely unaware that a business indeed does have the right to refuse service to people who won’t follow the rules.
