OT: The Cleveland Indians are no longer
Maybe they'll be the CBT this year?

Cleveland 9/11s.

Seriously. Did the Indian reservation complain, or the rich, white liberals in NY and CA sitting in their plush houses and condos.
December 13th, 2020 at 9:42 PM ^
It would have to be the latter for anything to get accomplished 'cause Lord knows the former have complained for years only to be flatly ignored, per usual...
December 13th, 2020 at 10:08 PM ^
Per usual?
Ill have to dig them up, but I’ve seen several surveys that show that most NA’s are not offended by the name Washington Redskins. Bill Maher references it all the time.
Perhaps it’s just the recreationally offended who dislike these types of names more so than NAs.
December 13th, 2020 at 10:17 PM ^
Native Americans have historically been flatly ignored, period, in this country. That's what I was getting at...
But...
I guess you'd rather believe some "poll" the Redskins organization released. Or Bill Maher (for some reason).
December 13th, 2020 at 11:01 PM ^
I can see where your opinions lie, and they’re quite biased. Native Americans have not been ignored flatly, period. Have things been great for Native Americans? No. Flatly ignored? No way.
In the context of this thread topic, we’ve changed countless teams names (100s, maybe even 1000s of names) precisely because we are listening to them. Which is why the redskins name took so long to change. They were mostly fine with it until recently. And that’s just the tip of iceberg.
December 13th, 2020 at 11:16 PM ^
Well there it is folks. Windy City Blue says Native Americans haven’t been ignored in this nation, only treated very badly.
Thank God we can put this contentious issue to rest once and for all.

Feel better?
December 13th, 2020 at 11:38 PM ^
Hell yeah I do! You just solved nearly 300 years of Native American issues in this country with one post proclaiming they haven’t been ignored. Why wouldn’t I feel like aces?
December 14th, 2020 at 6:32 AM ^
I can see where your opinions lie, and they’re quite biased.
... what? Get over yourself.
As Chris Rock so flatly joked - "When was the last time you met two Indians...? I have never seen an Indian family just chillin' at Red Lobster."
You'd think after all they've been through (and continue to go through) that throwing them this little bone wouldn't be a big deal but then here you come...
December 14th, 2020 at 7:20 AM ^
Ha! It seems Chris Rock needs to throw them a bone since he used the word Indian (gasp!) in the quote you gave.
December 14th, 2020 at 7:23 AM ^
(Gasp!) That stand-up special was 21 years ago...

Great point and these so called liberals are being EXPOSED now and they should be. This includes the wealthy white liberal elites of academia as well. How many of them have left their plush homes in Ann Arbor to go to Detroit and volunteer their time helping kids learn to read? NONE!
December 14th, 2020 at 8:05 AM ^
I've volunteered in Detroit on many occasions. There was no one, and I mean no one, from wealthy liberal neighborhoods. Volunteers were mainly from working middle-lower class areas, some of whom might be called "deplorables."

How did that piss in your Corn Flakes taste this morning?
December 14th, 2020 at 9:49 AM ^
"People are challenging my preconceived set of beliefs created by MSNBC, so let me try insulting them."
December 13th, 2020 at 9:44 PM ^
I understand getting rid of Wahoo, but this....I don’t know.
I mean it’s their team, not mine, so my opinion on the matter is irrelevant. My only question, and I’m sure many other think this as well, is where does this end?
When do Christian fundamentalists descend on Newark and demand the Devils change their name to something not sac-religious? When do Viking descendants get offended by the Vikings? When are the Chiefs, Braves and Blackhawks going the way of the dodo, too?
December 13th, 2020 at 9:54 PM ^
Historical context is always important. Generally, you want to avoid anything associated with slavery, genocide, or the Holocaust.
I know that's a real tall ask for some.
December 14th, 2020 at 8:09 AM ^
Ah okay. How about the Cleveland Depleted Uranium, Cleveland Drones, or Cleveland Wedding Bombers?
December 13th, 2020 at 9:58 PM ^
Didn't something along those lines happen that resulted in the Tampa Bay Devil Rays becoming just the Rays?
December 13th, 2020 at 10:35 PM ^
No. Owner wanted a rebrand from losing culture and considered many names, of which Rays was one.
December 14th, 2020 at 4:51 AM ^
Plus Devil Rays was fucking stupid.
December 14th, 2020 at 10:10 AM ^
we won't even address the fact that 'tampa bay' is not what some might call a 'city,' or 'state,' which is the typical starting point of a team name.
December 14th, 2020 at 10:53 AM ^
To which the Patriots reply, "Whatevah."

December 13th, 2020 at 9:56 PM ^
What about the Kansas City Chiefs, Chicago Blackhawks, Atlanta Braves and Golden State Warriors?
December 13th, 2020 at 10:10 PM ^
many cultures had warrior classes. That one isn't unique to American Indians...

Cleveland Wild Things
December 13th, 2020 at 10:01 PM ^
Go back to the Spiders; that's a cool name and animal. Merchandise sells itself.
I'll refrain from engaging in the incredibly thoughtful and earnest discussions going on about the degree to which Cleveland is bowing to faux political correctness and bootlicking in making this decision that has virtually no effect on anyone here except possibly needing to purchase some more memorabilia.
December 13th, 2020 at 11:39 PM ^
Except I’m scared of spiders.

December 13th, 2020 at 10:04 PM ^
I’ve always been of the opinion that so long as a significant majority of indigenous people are cool with the name/logo or whatever then fine, keep it. Not sure if that was the case here. Now, Chief Wahoo can definitely understand why the organization decided to disassociate with that logo, that was pretty bad.
December 13th, 2020 at 10:05 PM ^
When you haven't won a WS since Bob Lemon and Lou Boudreau in '48 and you found a way to lose to the Cubs who hadn't won a WS since 1908 - this $hit happens
December 13th, 2020 at 10:18 PM ^
I feel worse for the felines that have to have their name disparaged by that horrid organization in Detroit.
December 13th, 2020 at 10:19 PM ^
Thank you sports for being the moral compass
December 13th, 2020 at 10:20 PM ^
I mean the term Indians and red skins might be derogatory and should be changed but it still bothers me that they changed the teams with specific Indian tribe names. If that’s the case shouldn’t they change Celtics, Trojans, Spartans, Sooners, Hoosiers, and anything else that represents a group of human beings. Thank god were the Wolverines! Stupid really
December 13th, 2020 at 10:22 PM ^
You can’t even make up a language, as one day we might meet a civilization 100M LYs away that speaks it and some liberal group will complain.
December 13th, 2020 at 10:28 PM ^
Jeez, your butthurt level is off the charts on this one RJ.
December 13th, 2020 at 10:24 PM ^
JFC if someone has to explain to you the issues in this country with Native Americans vs. groups like the Celtics, Hoosiers, Sooners, Spartans and Trojans, then maybe you should spend less time watching sports and more time reading a history book.
December 13th, 2020 at 10:34 PM ^
Context is key. I think the issue people have isn’t that the names and imagery are representing groups of people in general, it’s the perceived disrespect and caracaturizing of historically oppressed groups of people in a country whose government has literally destroyed their cultures, and committed flat-out genocide against them. This would be be the case for “Viking” descendants, Spartans or whatever.
Now, whether you think that’s okay or not, i don’t really care. As far as actually using the names, I’ll refer to my above comment that so long as a large percentage of indigenous people are cool with it or don’t care, then keep it. I don’t think I as a white dude have the right to tell them to be offended by.
December 13th, 2020 at 10:21 PM ^
The team gave their fans a chance to possibly keep the Indians name when they said they were ditching the Chief Wahoo logo and told them to cool it on wearing it to the ballpark because it was a horribly offensive racist image.
Instead of seeing the team’s POV and agreeing it was the right thing to do, many of them threw a fucking shit fit and loudly proclaimed that they were going to continue to support that horribly offensive racist logo and wear it as much as they possibly could. So now the whole thing is gone.
Sorry CHIEF WAHOO LIVES! fans, assholes like you are why compromise doesn’t work and extreme measures have to be taken.
December 13th, 2020 at 10:24 PM ^
And changing the team name stops them how Einstein?
December 13th, 2020 at 10:31 PM ^
Because they can now say that’s not our team name anymore, we have rebuked it publicly and we will turn anyone away from the ballpark who is wearing any Indians merchandise.
Let me guess, you’re one of these “I BOUGHT THE DAMN TICKET I’LL WEAR WHAT I WANT! FREEDOM!” morons who is completely unaware that a business indeed does have the right to refuse service to people who won’t follow the rules.
December 14th, 2020 at 5:08 AM ^
Horribly offensive logo? What a douche bag.
December 14th, 2020 at 8:55 AM ^
You don’t think an cartoon of a native America with a big nose, big teeth and a feather in its head is offensive.
Well I guess that’s why people like you suck.
