Interesting that the BLM movement was the catalyst for a lot of change...and the response to "please stop murdering black people with the police" is "Let's change the names of some sports teams."

I'm a die-hard Tribe fan (probably won't be able to say that for too much longer). I understand that the name offends some people (including some Indians), and doesn't offend other people (including other Indians). I understand that times do change, and that it's a sensible decision to change the name to something that doesn't divide or turn away part of your potential fan-base.

What I do hope is that they don't change it to something stupid - like how they adopted the generic block-C after Chief Wahoo went away.

  • Spiders? Hate it. Spiders are mostly known for being the far-and-away worst team in baseball history (20-134 in 1899 after ownership shipped all the good players to St Louis, which they also owned.
  • Rocks? Terrible. Why would you want to Opponent-Watch-ify yourself?
  • Cleveland Baseball Team? Not a fan. I like the whole idea of the mononym - kind of how Michigan is rarely called the Wolverines - we're just MICHIGAN. But Washington beat them to the punch.
  • Lakeshores? No. Sounds like a after-work croquet league.

I guess if I had my druthers, I'd go with Axemen - as slang for a lead guitarist. Then in a century our grandkids could all hotly debate if the name was based on Carlos Santana (who was no longer a member of Cleveland by time the name was changed) or just a nod to the Rock Hall. But that will never happen, because you clearly don't get rid of ethnic language just to adopt gendered language.

I don't think they adopt a half-measure like that. It would satisfy almost none of the folks who are howling about the current name. Instead of talk about a "racist name", you'd have people talking about "a name rooted in racism". Heck, the Texas Rangers have come under some fire for honoring with their nickname an arm of law enforcement that has, at times, done some pretty nasty things. Why would you go through the work of changing the name just to adopt something that plenty of folks still find objectionable?

If you're actually invested in advancing the cause of dignity for people, it's probably best not to come out with guns blazing when someone tries to have a thoughtful/nuanced discussion on an important topic - particularly when you're incorrect, in that there's significant disagreement within the community in question as to what terms are preferable.

If you're just interested in proving your own enlightenment and getting your cheap shots in on the internet, please carry on as before.

How about the Cleveland Natives? Actually show the proper respect to Native Americans with a real native logo.

If you're mad or offended by this, then you have no right to call anyone a "snowflake"

Also, from a marketing and financial perspective, any excuse for a team to change it's name so they can rebrand and sell new merch is a great for a team

The Cleveland Indians have perpetuated an ugly, ugly stereotype of Native American culture for the past ~100 years. From the wholly egregious mascot to the equally absurd "tribe" to the entire bastardization of native iconography...it's absolutely absurd that the shtick has gone on this long when it was so clearly and utterly stereotypical. I think we can all agree, it wouldn't be a good look for a city to adopt "The Africans" as a team with an Uncle Tom mascot...I'm not sure why it's so hard to understand, subsequently, why "The Indians" may not be a good look...

Uncle Tom is a term for a politically conservative African American in the United States according to the posters at Wikipedia. Im going with it for the sake of discussion. So a caricature of a conservative African American would be offensive as a school mascot? I do feel it would be a lame mascot--not sure if it would be offensive. Columbus Africentric is a school in Central Ohio and they are the Nubians--a term often used to describe African Americans within their own community according to google. Are you basically telling me that they can have no mascot that will not be offensive? All mascots are cartoon-like caricatures--its the nature of the beast. I honestly dont know if they have a mascot running around at games or not---I dont attend Columbus Public School games often, particularly the smaller schools. It just seems silly to me to give a crap what a school, city, country, or whatever chooses to name their team and make their mascot. If they choose a crappy name and a stupid mascot, thats on them for making their own team look foolish
