Monday recruiting post

Submitted by TK on December 13th, 2021 at 12:15 PM

So first of all, I have nothing of definitive substance since I don’t subscribe to the premium recruiting sites, but there are a few tidbits I will mention. Early Signing day is only 2 days away and it’s surprisingly quiet so I don’t know if that’s a good sign or bad. A couple of notes:

-Michigans class continues to move up the rankings, at least for now. The class is now ranked 9th and some of the lower recruits like Jones, Alexander and Dent got bumps over the weekend. Spurlock recently got a bump as well and has reportedly received some Florida attention so that’s a good indicator we might have got another steal assuming he sticks.

-ASU RB Chip Treynum and Virginia C Oluwatami visited over the weekend. Nothing I have found indicates how it went, or when they will be deciding. Both would be major wins for this team, but I think we will be fine without them also if they choose to go elsewhere.

Other recent visitors.
*4 DT Deone Walker. There is mention of Sam saying there was a positive development in this recruitment but he isn’t signing until February so the battle will continue.

*4 DE Derrick Moore. No real info here but Wiltfong has a low confidence prediction in for us.

4* WR Darrius Clemons. Again no info on how it went; looks like most have him pegged to Auburn.

3* QB Alex Orji. *shrug*

Others:

3* ND Commit WR Amarion Walker. He recently visited Bama. He seems a little bit like Andrel Anthony where he is going to be a much better player than what his ranking is. The crystal balls all favor Michigan but he has not pulled the trigger yet. Reading on the ND message boards it sounds like they are about 50-50 on keeping him. Some believe he will stick, some do not. Michigan recently was in home with him.

4* S Keon Sabb. Michigan had some buzz about gaining his commitment in the past couple weeks but it’s been quiet lately. No new crystal ball activity, and nothing I can see as far as the scheduled announcement.

My hope is that we can gain commitments from Walker, Saab and at least one of the transfers. And then go all in for Deone walker in February. But none of these seem like slam dunks at the moment.

Sorry, I don’t have all the answers but I’m appreciative of those who posted the info about D Walker and Wiltfong putting in a CB for Clemons. Since our format lets topics slide down the page that no one sees, and signing day is 2 days away, I thought it was worthwhile to put a refresher of who is left out there and let people know our class has moved up in the rankings again. In my opinion is a better topic than some of the other snowflakes out there. If we could pin a recruiting thread like literally every other board, we wouldn’t have the Mgoblog thread police up in arms.

For those who have posted real info, it’s much appreciated to the rest of us.

Haha right. Are you new here? A thread title like that would have me sent to Bolivia in no time. It’s a thread to discuss recruiting, and it’s produced some good info. I didn’t title it “I have brand new info that no one else knows so click here and be amazed”. Again, thank you to all who have contributed non-dickish replies.

To TK, responding to your quoted comments:

”are you new here”. That would be my question to you, however with one click on your user name I can find that out myself.

“sent to Bolivia”. My title example was sarcastic of course. A good title would be your words “thread to discuss recruiting”.

“produced some good info” It would have been more efficient and helpful for you to just go here and then post what you learned:

https://247sports.com/college/michigan/Season/2022-Football/CurrentTargetPredictions/

…instead of asking others to do it

“Non-dickish replies”  let’s just say some people seek feedback only to receive confirmation for how great they are, while others seek out ways to improve so they can become great.

Dickish, no.  But flippant or snark, quite possibly! :)

Sam feels good about Amorion Walker.

Sam feels good about the transfer center from Virginia.

Sam feels good about Deone Walker

Sam feels good about Derrick Moore

Sam feels good about Darius Clemons

In short Sam feels good about the officials over the weekend.

agreed...there has been a lot of movement on a lot of those mentioned above

Keon Sabb for example, seems likely and will announce Wednesday.

Clemmons just got CBs to Michigan

Signs point to Walker flipping to Michigan (maybe clemmons decision keeps him at ND?)

Signs point to Michigan being able to get Moore into the class and avoid the Biff Poggi rule.

The positive development on Deone was that he had a visit to UK over the weekend (he visited U-M right before he left late last week) and the staff was able to get him on campus again last night once he landed before the dead period went into effect at midnight. So staff was able to get the last in person word in.

Also, Steve Wiltfong (confidence of 7) and Brandon Huffman (confidence of 4) both put in CBs for Darrius Clemons for Michigan this morning.

Keon Sabb reportedly is going to be an early enrollee wherever he winds up, so I’d expect an announcement on Wednesday (early signing day).  Also, he hasn’t been linked to any school other than Michigan (no visits, etc) since his Clemson decommit, so it’d be pretty surprising if he wound up anywhere else in the next two days.  This feels like a situation where no news is good news.

The quiet on the Sabb front is worrisome, seems like that was trending towards an immediate M commit when he exited Clemson. Really hope we get him. Would really like to get Moore as well as the others mentioned in the OP (seems like Michigan might have a couple edges going pro!).

On a random, recruiting names side note, at one time M was in it for Austin Ausberry. If he must go elsewhere, seems appropriate that his crystal balls are trending to Auburn. Guess I'll hold out hope for a future highly rated cornerback named Michael Michaels.

I thought Deone Walker was announcing on Dec 15th? Trieu reported this on Dec 2nd.

Detroit Cass Tech senior defensive lineman Deone Walker will announce his college commitment on December 15th, the first day of the Early Signing Period.

Quick question: If transfer players at other universities are being invited to come to campus to possibly join the team, I’m assuming if they want to commit, they could and they’ve been vetted to see if they qualify? I mean if not, wtf is the point of inviting them to visit?

They've had transfer prospects visit before and not get past admissions. Or they can get in, but have to retake more classes than they want. I take visits to mean the coach thinks they have a good shot at getting in based on their transcripts. They still have to apply and get officially admitted, not a sure thing unless they are from a school Michigan considers one of its peers. The center from Virginia should have no problem.

Michigan must have a broad definition of its peer since it has admitted transfers from Nebraska, Kentucky, multiple jucos and a hundred other schools across multiple sports. Unless you think Michigan admissions likes basketball more than football they aren't the problem.

Shea Patterson visited with two teammates, Van Jefferson (now an NFL WR) and a safety that the staff badly wanted and needed at the time. Patterson got admitted, although he had to retake some classes. His teammates did not.

It's not an issue of Michigan's football coaches unwillingness to pursue transfers. We don't usually hear about the prospects who get turned down. We do hear about the ones who get admitted. It can skew your perspective on how hard it can be to get past admissions.

It's not impossible to get in from a lot of schools. It's still a lot easier from a school Michigan considers a peer. You are aware that Michigan Admissions rejected a transfer from a Purdue basketball player in 2020. He was an upperclassman with a major Michigan doesn't offer. If he had been a at Purdue for only a year, it's unlikely he would have had a problem.

One of the transfer targets is a grad transfer from UVA, so I don’t expect he’d have any admissions trouble.

The other is a sophomore, but with three years of eligibility left thanks to Covid, he could presumably still graduate before his eligibility expired if some of his credits didn’t transfer, especially if he enrolled for next semester.

I have us finishing with adding Sabb, Moore, A. Walker, and Clemons for now

  • Sabb seems locked up. No buzz on other contenders
  • Moore seems like a UM lean (EJ Holland and a national analyst on On3 have predicted him to Michigan as well). I wouldn't be surprised if he signs now and figures out the paperwork thing later
  • Amorion Walker has been a bit all over the place, but I'll keep my trust in what the Michigan insiders have indicated
  • I think it's probably too little, too late on Clemons unfortunately EDIT: multiple CBs have come in for Clemons to commit to Michigan! Wiltfong and Brandon Huffman!
  • That's news to me that Deone Walker isn't signing on Wednesday. I would still lean Kentucky there but if it's not them it would probably be Michigan
  • Conerly is gonna stretch til February. USC hasn't hired an OLine coach yet which will be an important factor. I don't see this going our way unless at minimum we squeeze another visit out of him
  • Kevonte Henry and Kody Jones are a bit up in the air to stay in the class, but I'm hopeful both stick
  • Deuce Spurlock indicated he'll sign Wednesday as planned. He did not specify that it would be to Michigan but that is my assumption
  • I expect 1-2 new targets to emerge in the new year

I’ll ask this here because I haven’t seen or heard a good answer yet: How many guys can we take on in this class? The numbers don’t quite add up to me without some serious expected attrition.

TK

December 13th, 2021 at 1:03 PM ^

The answer is that there is going to be some serious attrition. There might be up to 20 guys on the roster who won’t be back next season who could be. Hutch, Hill, Ojabo, Moody, Haskins, Ross, Steuber will all likely be off to play or attempt NFL. The rest will be 5th/6th year guys moving on and then playing time transfers.

Damn, gonna miss those guys.  The heart of this team.

We always do that thing were we ask "Do we have any guys that would even start for Ohio State in their position?"  Well, there is a list right there for starters.

They have forever made their mark.  And we have hope for even more.

Might as well win it all.

I’m fairly sure there’s no publicly available official one.  That said, you can look to see who got in late vs. Maryland and Iowa for some ideas.  Alternatively, go to the depth chat by class page under useful stuff.  There you will see a list of everyone with scholarships.  If you click on the players, you will be taken to the articles that they’ve appeared in on mgoblog.  Notably, there are a number of defensive backs in their 3rd and 4th years with no mentions since the spring or last fall — it’s reasonable to assume they’re buried on the depth chart.  Given that we’ll return 3-4 starters and seem to have a very solid recruiting class with a couple of players who could see the field instantly, it’s safe to anticipate some attrition from that group.

I also anticipate a QB transfer given the staff’s pursuit of two QBs this class and the general rate of QB transfers in college football.

I have no insider info on Moore but just reading the tea leaves it's going to be hard to beat out Ole Miss and Miss St. When those two get heavily involved at the last minute it historically hasn't gone well.

Thanks TK for another solid post. It's odd that Amarion Walker hasn't committed yet but I guess he's just waiting for a dramatic announcement on ESD. Makes sense.

I'm highly doubtful we'll be able to reel in either of the February hold outs (Deone Walker/Josh Conerly). But I am optimistic that we could land both of the transfer candidates who visited recently, particularly Oluwatami. Where else could Oluwatami land that would be considered better than Michigan next season?
