Moderator Action Sticky 2024

Submitted by Seth on February 7th, 2024 at 11:03 AM

Hello National Champions. New sticky for a new year.

Please don't post on here unless it's for Moderator Actions because they get cumbrously long. Long threads get deleted.

Want the rules of the board? READ THE FAQ: http://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/mgoboard-faq

--------------------------------------

Sharing Trolls Counts as Trolling: Sometimes desperately lazy outlets hire trolls, or trolls who are good at social media build enough of a following, that they become a headache for us, spreading hate or falsehoods. Because having them repeated on our site can directly harm us, if you're on the message board you should be aware that posting something from them could get you banned. They are:

  • SirYacht/Chat Sports/James Yoder - Fake news merchant who likes to make up plausible rumors or report non-sure things to get a false scoop.
  • Any local Spartan media when they talk about Michigan. Unless they're yelling "MAKE PLAYS!"
  • Rainer Sabin: Finebaum wannabe hired by the Freep to troll Michigan fans.
  • Tony Garcia: Same deal. Sparty the Freep hired to be a troll. If he's posting news you can probably find the same from Angelique and others.
  • Steve Deace: Curiously well-funded white supremacist radio host who's got such a small Michigan following you can safely assume anyone posting positively about him is Deace and ban him again. Creates lots of burner accounts to promote himself. Booted by Maven for advocating lynching.
  • Barstool: People who took the freedom of young internet too seriously because really what they wanted to do the whole time was propagate bad ideas. This one's a soft ban. No beef, but we are on opposite ends of the fan vibe, so if it's being posted there it's unlikely to be welcome here and vice versa.

Thank you for finally paying some attention.

Our job as mods here isn't about censorship, isn't about what "upsets" or "bothers" us, isn't about authority.  To the contrary, it's about helping to maintain the MGoBoard as a vital and thriving part of the very best sports blog anywhere.

If you hadn't noticed, I made sure to state that I was considering removing a post for each time you upvoted yourself, NOT that I would do so. My statement was to serve more direct notice to you that I take my responsibilities to this community seriously. And that sometimes I'm forced to consider using slightly more unconventional tactics to achieve the goal of keeping the board an enjoyable place for the membership.

Locking up the Starlink - It Works thread, and heading immediately back to bed.  Eff it, I ain't staying up at 3:30 am to weed out the unnecessary political sniping that heavily infiltrated the thread.

Thank you, Rob, and the other mods on this site. I really feel that you don't get the appreciation that you all deserve, especially since the job, within itself, can be a very daunting task.

Serious question: How does one become a mod? I've been a lurker since 2011 but finally created an account in 2016, however, I don't remember seeing anything in regard to a user becoming a mod or postings of this blog needing one. How did you all become one?

In other words, throw out the baby along with the bathwater?

No, I took a different tactic, hoping that my instincts are correct ---that the vast majority of us on the MGoBoard are intelligent and mature enough to be able to have a good discussion of starlink and the pros vs cons of Elon Musk sending up thousands of low-orbit space junk.

Devo warned us, Musk didn't listen.

Curious as to why my post got deleted.  In what way was it offensive or "off topic".  My comment literally has to do with the founder and owner of Starlink (which the post was about).

Objectively...Liberal or democrat (and I did say throw all the other crap away)....if you have your hand in starting PayPal, Tesla, Starlink, SpaceX and a boring company...it is not an unreasonable statement to make that he is a genius of his generation.  There is more evidence for it than there is against it.

Furthermore, such a statement of his genius doesn't endorse him as a person or his views.  Just his capabilities.  Atilla the Hun was a military genius and probably a political one too of his era, but he was not an admirable person.

In goodwill, truly, it just feels like my comment was censored because someone didn't like what they brought politically to my comment...not what was inherantly in my comment.

This is the post in question, correct?

https://www.mgoblog.com/comment/245263126#comment-245263126

I don't remember the exact wording of your comment, but I do recall it was the first in a long stream of threaded comments that took XM's thread topic way off track.

I had a few MGoUsers who suggested I delete either the entire sequence that began with your comment, or even delete the entire thread. Deleting the entire post would have meant taking down a good post that did nothing to earn that fate, so that option was immediately eliminated. And (after getting more sleep and then morning coffee) I did briefly consider the first option but instead opted for "surgical removal" so that those who voiced their opposition to the injection of politics wouldn't have their posts deleted.

Yours was one of two posts in which I removed the wording and replaced it with my moderator commentary; all the other approximately two dozen or so missing posts that were removed were several posts that directly violated the "no politics" rule (and the threaded reactions to those particular comments). I don't recall your post being overtly political but it was controversial and did set off a chain reaction. So without being able to see or recall your exact words, that's why I erased it but left my comment in its place.

If anything, I might be guilty of being overly creative and spending too much time on it. I guess that's what I get for sometimes thinking outside the box. But in retrospect I believe my approach was correct.

I get it. You guys have a tough job. I appreciate all that you all do. I’d buy you a beer or a whisky if I could.

Just sad that we have come to a place where people politicize everything. If someone had said “George Soros was a top business man and a titan of industry unlike many others.”  I would not immediately run to what I thought about him politically or personally.  I’d be like “Yeah…he is.”  Regardless of how i felt about him personally.  But I guess I’m in the minority.

Rob,

Except you left up some political bath water.  All my follow up posts on that post were to remove the politics.

Sure you have the right to disagree and you are the mod.  You get all the power.

The challenge is I actually went through some training (officially a non partisan, non profit) on this stuff so that we can recognize it, get past it, and have conversations that bridge the divide. (Those types of conversations are not possible on the board because it requires discussions of specific issues).  Nonetheless, my radar could easily be more attuned than others.

The cost of leaving it up is that it perpetuates a false truth along with mgoboard and Brian advocacy.  That broad message creates a belief system that undermines the conversations people could be having (again not on here but elsewhere in their lives).  And I have to get through this crap if I do outreach. Even if they changed it to “some people … and some people…”, which is more true, it still undermines the conversations good people are trying to bridge.

But you are the mod and I am by choice just an anonymous poster.  If you have a DM or a Twitter (i have an account but am not active), I can send you the training details if you’re interested.

Erick All now likes his Michigan coaches

Article is good, framing by OP was bad. All left because Michigan's docs wouldn't approve a crackpot doc who had a treatment for All's back. The experimental surgery included some sort of NIL deal, but M docs we're adamant he didn't need it, and had strong reservations about All marketing it because it could lead to more surgeries on healthy young backs.

Feel like this comment by WindyCityBlue in the Ryan Field thread is rally pushing the no politics envelope.

Just curious.  Has the blog ever considered reordering the MGoBoard posts by latest post/replies?  A lot of times, super fun/active threads get buried quickly and it can be a pain to find them.

Great job, everyone.  Love this place.

Might take a gander at Guy Fawkes' "contributions" to the Sherrone Moore/SoTU thread. Salvatorre's aren't much better, but stop short of straight up shitting on the no politics rules.

Thanks for the heads up, 'Hanlon' and 'blanx'.  I'll take a closer look when I have time later this evening, but in the meantime, the accounts of both 'Fawkes' and 'Salvatore' are suspended.  At first glance, Fawkes is more likely than not to be a permanent banning.

Why reference January 6th when it had no relevance to the subject being discussed? It was a blatant political reference. But what’s done is done. I am not going to protest further.

Bigger issue is I was again sent a harassing email from a board member mocking me for  my suspension. This bizarre, juvenile behavior  is kind of disturbing. This person can’t seem to let go of whatever grievance they have with me.

[email protected] is the email account. I suspect that this is a disguised  email account so I don’t think there is anything anyone at MGoBlog can do about it. But it’s worth letting you know so you are aware of the conduct in case someone else receives weird emails.

I can't help you with that Sal.  I don't know of any access that would allow me to look up anyone's MGoAccount by their email address.  I'm able to see on my  moderator page the email address an individual used when they created their account. Beyond that, I don't have further access.

Your account has been reinstated.  My advice to you is this: tread into politics at your own risk. When you're tempted to take the bait (as you perceive it), think before you go down that road.

Yeah. Probably a good idea to check out how I was responded to after watching the posted video I posted that I bellieved that our players were unique and stayed in the design that humans were made for instead of how culture makes us all selfish and how this translates to football. Good grief that you would post in here that I did anything wrong. I was accused of trying to convert people to which I responded i wasnt, I simply made an observation from a video posted through my world view. Am I not allowed the freedom to relate the two and share openly?

The answer is this - yes, if someone had tried to knit together a paragraph through the lens of Hindu, Buddhism, Shinto, Baha'i, and so on, it would still be removed. Please do not pull the "woe is me" card for a faith shared by just short of one-third of the world's population (last estimate, I believe). That's simply unbecoming.
