Moderator Action Sticky 2019

Welcome to the offseason; new mod sticky.

WHY WAS MY THREAD DELETED? Read thishttp://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/mgoboard-faq

WHY IS MY ACCOUNT LOCKED? Read thishttp://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/mgoboard-faq

WHAT IS THE APPEAL PROCESS? Post here (start a new account if you were banned), or email David (all or our emails are our names at mgoblog.com). David will then ask "Why is this person emailing me?" and we'll be like "Just handle it" and he'll say "But how? I don't want to be the guy doing this" and I'll say "When it comes to dealing justice, trust the guy who doesn't want the job, that's what I always say," because I always say that.

Don't comment in this thread unless you have to: If you leave an irrelevant comment in this thread it will be deleted.

Hall of Stickies Past: For those who love to get lost in the meta. The first, the second, the third. the fourth. The fifth. The sixth. The seventh. The eighth.

WHY DO YOU MODERATE...

  1. Anything? Freedom of speech doesn't imbue what you say with any quality, just like the freedom to invent a machine doesn't mean everyone has to buy it, or that every market has to let you display it. MGoBlog is a business, not a public institution; people come here for a high-quality ideas market about Michigan athletics. If you put out a bad apple, it gets tossed. If you do it constantly, you lose your stand.
  2. Politics. Don’t you get enough of this everywhere else?
  3. Unpopular ideas. Moderators are given the primary instruction: DO NOT CENSOR IDEAS. But some ideas are so tiresome and retread and badly argued that they’re not worth keeping around. If you’re getting a substantial amount of downvotes we’ll look to see if you’re posting an unpopular opinion that you can support. If you can’t support it politely and rationally, or if you don’t acknowledge the holes in your argument, it’s noise. Pro tip: if you're getting frustrated in a conversation, back off for a sec, find the BEST part of the argument of the other guy, acknowledge that's a good point, and try to pick it apart.
  4. Content from other sites. Clickbait is annoying. 247, WTKA always get the benefit of the doubt.
  5. The Drew Sharp Memorial Don’t Feed the Professional Trolls Rule. Pete Finebaum has taken the place of the late Sharp. Valenti is on there too. If someone's trolling Michigan fans, don't spread it.
  6. The ChatSports Rule. Given: a) The only person Yoder sources is Yoder, b) the only non-bot who follows Yoder is Yoder, and c) roughly 7.53 billion humans on Earth lucky enough to not be Yoder would be appalled if anyone thought they were Yoder, we can logically assume that anyone sharing a Yoder link must be Yoder, and we'll ban Yoder again.
  7. Bewbs and general misogyny/objectifying of women. We have tens of thousands of female Michigan fans; don't make it suck for them.

Nah, new maizen/bluey/Diagonal Blue/Hei2man/Old 98 is https://mgoblog.com/users/1201.

Kind of annoying that it's so obvious who it is every time he creates a new profile, but it usually takes a couple of months for him to get banned again. Knowing he can get away with it is why he can use the exact same tone and phrases over and over while pretending it's not him. That, or he's incredibly delusional and thinks he's being clever, which I'm not ruling out.

In all seriousness, there's pretty clearly some mental health issues at play with him.  I don't think the moderators are doing him or the MGo community any good by letting him cycle through account after account. Serial abuse of site rules should result in a timeout, if not a permanent ban.

Is Nick Bosa a racist ?

We really don't need this on our board. The intersection of politics and Michigan sports is sometimes unavoidable but this is not one of those cases. Especially because it concerns a player most of our readers are naturally disposed to dislike already for football reasons.

Attack Each Day - Host Discussion

There are about 10 million people on this Earth who would give up an important body part to do a podcast with Jim Harbaugh. That inspires envy, and that envy inspires people to rip on the one guy who's earned the job. The thing is there isn't another guy in 10 million who could do what Ira Weintraub does, and it's a very bad look for us when he gets trashed on this site.

Many programs around the country have some radio slappies they can throw out there to pump the talking points of the coach. NONE but Michigan have a guy like Ira, who can get the access and trust of the program without being their mouthpiece.

So I'm done tolerating threads and comments dogging him. His value to Michigan and his value to us is up there with any player. Fair criticism in threads is fair, but when you start a thread about it you're seen as representing MGoBlog, and that's not going to happen anymore.

I understand your displeasure with the thread, but I think there is a line between fair criticism and dogging. My point was that my favorite podcast is now no longer a podcast I can listen to because of the new host and the way he directs the conversation. It’s y’alls board and can moderate anyway you like, but to delete that thread and leave ones up where 18 year old amateurs are criticized, even more so than what Ira was, is just an odd juxtaposition.

I have HTTV to write. Can whoever is starting multiple accounts to make the same tired point please stop, and can whoever is annoyed by this stop letting it annoy them so much?

Seth I have been wallowing in self pity thinking I need a vacation in the worst way, and from everything.

Not any more, I cede that to you.  Hope you have some time off and something fun planned at some point this summer.

I’ve had this new account since about the time Trevor Keegan committed (a poor choice in words in his commit thread is what got my old account banned). I’ve made several mentions that my points aren’t tracking and even though I was posting frequently I wasn’t able to make threads or upvote or downvote. I never recalled seeing anyone respond regarding it.

Any chance there is an update for me as to why I can’t track points? I just want to be able to upvote and downvote and maybe make a thread once in a blue moon.

I recognize and see how busy you Mods are and such, so I understand if this simply isn’t a concern. Not a big deal, it’s just an itch I can’t scratch

Will you provide some insight on why Maizen’s new account, 1201, seems to be the only new account that is able to accumulate points and create new posts.  The usernames In the posts above have been asking the question for months to no avail.  Why was his account chosen while others languish in purgatory?

Ha! True, zero chance of a response.  I think the answer can be surmised by reading a comment from 1201 earlier today:

“I won't say who but someone who works for this site told me the same exact thing”

It would appear that the answer is he is connected to someone on the board and they granted him access.  It’s not a technical issue as it’s clear if they want someone to be able to post, they will be able to post.

I set him back to 1 point because it annoyed the hell out of me that he posted the Ian Boyd article instead of someone who wouldn't hurt the article's credibility by reputation and immediately going to the "Runyan sucks" angle.

For the record: Ian Boyd is A+++++. Never miss a thing he writes.

You gain points from posting. I think he just knows how to get to 100 points quickly by replying to things that will get him upvotes, and once he hits 100, by posting decent threads. Like, I would expect someone to post an Ian Boyd article that talks about Michigan 100% of the time--Boyd writes for HTTV, lives in Ann Arbor, and is one of THE X's and O's guys. 1201 posted that thread. He gets 10 points for it. Boyd also coincidentally calls out people like maizen in his HTTV article this year!

The points system will just automatically grant you a status when you get to a point threshold.

We've got a new plan in the works to deal with serial account-starters but it's not easy to develop. My take on Maizen is there's one on every message board, and it's too much hassle to play whack-a-mole with someone that committed to getting their take out there. When a new account starts, it's treated like a new account.

The obnoxious troll account "SpicyLatino" was created today. I think he deserves a permanent vacation in La Paz.

Reminder that this is not a thread for conversing in.

The issue of some users not gaining points goes back to the site revamp and we still don't know why it's occurring. When I see one and I have a second I go and give the user 1 point if they've been here just a short time or 99 points if they've been here longer (so they can enjoy the moment they roll over to 100). That seems to jog it. Could use help from the mods to do this more often.

Know that in order for everyone to keep their points we had to get the points system rewritten from scratch. It has to be updated with every drupal update.

Hi Seth; I just read that you are gifting points to those of us who have accounts that don't accumulate points. I definitely fit that category as I should have hundreds of points by now. Check my posting history. Let me know if you are able to do this. Thanks for your help.
