Per Michigan football Facebook: Texas to be noon game, UMx is beside himself

My question, if this game doesnt warrant being on primetime...what game does?

How irritating...

1. I was hoping to bring some of my wife's relatives up from Florida to see this game and in exchange go to a night game in Gainesville. May have to pick another game now.

2. It's the hottest part of the season...good chance it's boiling out

It was always gonna be a noon game. We were supposed to be in Austin but since Texas wanted to leave for the SEC in 2024, Fox didn’t want to lose such marquee game to espn. So they made it work by playing In Ann Arbor this year so Fox can keep it and play in Austin for the return game later so ESPN can still have a game. Fox always had this game which meant it was slated for big noon the second that deal was made for Texas to be able to leave early for the SEC.

Mostly you've got it right.  Two minor exceptions and one other addition:

They had to do some moving around last year in Year One of the contract for CBS, as they had the SEC for one more year. But going forward, every 3:30 game should be CBS.

NBC has some sort of option to move a Notre Dame game (or two?) each year to primetime instead of 1:30 pm, in place of a Big Ten prime time game.  I believe that this would yield a FOX Big Ten Prime Time game once or twice a year head-to-head with that prime time Notre Dame game.  And then NBC gets the noon kick off on that day.

Fox is also trying to get a Friday night Prime Time game each week.  Presumably this would be the 4th best game each week, and feature a lot of Oregon, Washington, and UCLA home games (or, perhaps, some East Coast or Midwest Big Ten teams hosting that normally don't get as many national games).  Michigan, Ohio State, and Penn State have strongly pushed back (or opted out) from hosting Friday night games.

Keith Jackson was the best.  Bob Griese did a good job, especially when Brian played, even though he was QB when Purdue beat us one year!  I suspect Gary Danielson will be back in the mix with CBS getting involved.  Though he became an SEC homer, he grew up in B1G football and was pretty good in his early TV years.

If FOX gets that game, it'll be at noon.  However, I can't imagine that they always get first pick.  I was confident Texas would be at noon because flipping this game to Ann Arbor was a major part of the negotiations to get UT and OU into the SEC a year early.  So I assumed that this one had to be excluded from the normal draw.  FOX will take Michigan @ OSU with its first pick; whoever goes next might well pick USC @ Michigan.  Notre Dame is home against Miami (NTM), so I think either NBC or CBS would take that game.  There's nothing else compelling in the Big Ten that day.

Bigger Picture....

Does this mean they're choosing the slots now?   Or are they not yet at that point, but Fox is announcing they're using the first pick on M-Texas?  The latter would be wild as that would mean they're passing on The Game (hello frennnnsss....3:30 CBS kick).

Where are they in the selection process?

No, I think it's just as I said -- I think this game was excluded from the rights pool because it was a sweetener to FOX to compensate for OU and UT getting to join the SEC (and its ESPN contract) instead of playing one last year in the Big 12 (where FOX had the primary contract).  This game was originally supposed to be in Austin, where ESPN would have had the rights; they flipped it with the 2027 game.  If you were a TV exec and you had to choose between Texas @ Michigan and Michigan @ OSU, you'd take. The Game 100 times out of 100.

I believe they draft the weekends later in the year -- maybe June?  I don't know exactly how the process works with all three networks, but when it was FOX and ESPN, FOX's contract gave them first draft pick, so they'd pick Week 14, meaning "We get the first choice of games in Week 14," which would naturally be UM/OSU.  Then ESPN would take a turn, and they'd pick, say, Week 2.  They didn't make the selection about the actual games until the 6 or 12 day windows hit, but if you knew you had first choice a given weekend, you could announce it early -- and of course, they know what games are scheduled when, so they draft the weekends with that in mind.

I'm assuming -- without direct knowledge -- that the new contracts are similar.

"If this game doesnt warrant being on primetime...what game does"

Hmm, i wonder why Fox would want to put such a BIG game like this on at NOON SATURDAY

I think the home games against the west coast teams will either be 3:30 pm starts or night games.   Noon kickoffs would be 9:00 am PT and, I’d assume that’s too early of a start for those conference matchups.

So, let’s see what the USC and Oregon kickoff times turn out to be.

While I agree that west coast fans will rise early to watch their East coast / Midwest teams kick off at noon EDT - I expect there to be a “gentleman’s agreement that focuses on the players and kickoff times.

My guess is - when west coast teams travel east - the starts will target for 3:30 pm EDT - and, an occasional night game.  When eastern time zone B1G teams travel west - they’ll target the 3:30 pm EDT slot - with an occasional 8:00 pm EDT game.   The issue will be travel and “body clock” for the players.  I doubt a  7:00 pm PDT or later will be scheduled for a “traditional” B1G opponent traveling west.   I think ADs will highlight travel times - with the impact a red eye return flight has on the players.

But, what do I know?

I believe that it was stated that the West Coast teams will not have HOME kickoffs at noon Eastern, but that they can expect to have some ROAD kickoffs at noon Eastern.

At the end of the day, we are probably only talking about 1 game a year per team. If USC at Michigan is a FOX pick, then that ends up at noon.  But I don't expect a Peacock or FS1 game with USC to be a noon kick.  USC plays at UCLA, Washington, Michigan, Minnesota, and Maryland next year, so likely only one game with a chance to be a FOX noon game.
