MBB: 5 star (#6 nationally) Romeo Langford to IU

Submitted by Bambi on
He was named Mr. Basketball in Indiana this morning and committed to IU tonight over Vandy and KU. Huge get for Archie Miller, if Juwan Morgan comes back (which is expected) Indiana should be much improved next year in a weak B1G.

Doesn’t mean shit until we meet on the court. Hopefully we can make it 6 straight against the Hoosiers

With JB as coach I honestly don’t really worry about getting highly rated recruits. I just know that he’ll make us a contender with or without high star guys.

Yeah, no doubt. I guess I just don’t get worked up about it. Football I felt the same way when Harbaugh first came here, but now I’m a little more concerned, but once we win some huge games were not favored to, I think we will get a few more elite guys.

Seriously, we’ve seen Beilein with great recruits before and it was awesome. John Beilein is a hell of a good coach, but starting with more talented players sounds great to me (and is part of why I’m excited for the next year).

Right, the thing about b-ball 5 stars is you're obligated to play them the first year and then they leave for the NBA.  MSU, for example, has done worse since they started landing 5 stars.

MSU didn’t seem that obligated to play the 5-stars, even when they were the better option, which could explain some of MSU’s problems. I could envision point guard in Beilein’s offense as a position where longevity and understanding the offense better may add more value than top talent, but even then I’m not sure. In other positions, I’d be happy to take more players good enough to be one-and-done; we saw how valuable Mitch McGary was towards the end of his freshman year (and even freshman Nick Stauskas, though he was not good enough to be one-and-done, was good enough to contribute a lot to the team).

First Michigan gets an OL commit that we desperatly need, now this. As an IU alum and huge IUBB fan this made today amazing! Can’t wait for next year when my college football and b-ball teams turn it around! Hopefully I’ll be able to talk some shit in 2019. God knows I couldn’t say shit to anyone last year.

lacks defensive talent.  They may outscore teams, but until they show they can actually stop teams, they will struggle.  JB has raised the bar with his defensive coordinator concept, so I look for us to be very competitive again next season.

I’d say lacking defensive effort is more like it. This past season Miller was still playing with all of Creans players. He has a culture to change and that won’t happen overnight. Creans system was all about getting the ball up the court as quickly as possible and trying to out-score people. Until he gets everyone to buy into the mindset that you must bring it on both ends every night we will continue to struggle. I think, or at least I’m hoping to see more buy in on the defensive end of the floor in year 2 under Miller. I will say getting Romeo to stay home is a huge step in the right direction for the program. Hopefully we get more than one year out of him.

Haven't seen it posted, but Charles Matthews (and Mo Wagner) got invited to the NBA combine.  A little bit of a surprise that Matthews got an invite, as several guys projected higher in the draft got left out.

Probably increases the chances he stays in the draf to 50/50.  He currently has private workouts scheduled with at least 2 different teams.

If you declare for the draft and are on a big time team, you'll get an invite. It's definitely not 50/50 unless some team gurantees he gets taken in the first round. Matthews has the chance to really improve his stock and be a solid SF prospect if he stays another year. No way with his FT and 3 PT shooting this past year that he gets drafted. He's still raw

We’ll be fine with whoever we get. Beilein has earned the right to recruit whoever he wants and not get questioned for it.

Not saying that’s what’s happening here, but all I say to IU bringing this kid in is bring it on.

I live in Jeffersonville Indiana (across the river from Louisville Kentucky), but more importantly it's about 5-10 minutes from New Albany Indiana..... which is where this kid plays. I can attest that this kid is a BEAST, and will instantly make Indiana much better!

I wonder he compares with David DeJulius?  DeJulius was certainly making some waves earlier in the year, and you have to love a point guard who can shoot like he does.  Michigan really benefited from shooting guard MAAR being able to handle the ball while being on the floor with point guard Z Simpson.
