Junior Colson feels angry, blindsided by Brown firing
December 22nd, 2020 at 10:57 PM ^
I imagine he’s waiting to see who we hire and what he thinks of the new coach
December 22nd, 2020 at 11:21 PM ^
Yeah, it reads like a totally reasonable response to Brown being fired by a recruit. I assume Colson will wait for the new DC and make a decision from there; my money is on him sticking to UM but who knows. Certainly wouldn't blame him if he left. But this doesn't seem like a guy who feels massively betrayed as much as surprised a bit and dealing with a new situation.

This has been mentioned in a couple threads tonight, but thanks for making it a topic. I am sympathetic to Junior if he was not informed of the possible departure of Don Brown. He was being recruited as a Viper which is pretty specific to a Don Brown defense. With that said, he also should have asked these questions prior to signing a letter of intent. I believe he can still be successful at Michigan with a good coach however. It would be nice for him and Michigan to mend this situation soon. If I read correctly his family has Michigan ties which could help take pause before doing anything irrational. Last resort is that he asks for a release from his intent.

The VIPER position isn't unique to a Don Brown defense, there are many examples of the same concept around football - they're just called different things. You have your VIPER, viper, hybrid spacebacker, spacebacker (are these guys Guardians, now?), and I'm sure there are others. Point is, they are all combinations of some speedy, safety-like linebackery substance with slightly different jobs depending on the type of defense being run.

That's a good point. That position has really evolved over the years as the passing game has become so prevalent. I guess in Junior's case, it would depend if Michigan obtains an aggressive coordinator that will utilize him in a similar fashion.

First college lesson for young dude... life throws you curveballs. Learn how to hit em or ride the bench.
December 22nd, 2020 at 10:35 PM ^
. . . and other cliches of that nature?
December 22nd, 2020 at 10:48 PM ^
Just don't tell Junior the one about the lemons, the making lemonade, and the throwing of said lemonade in face of the guy whom you asked to give you oranges.
December 22nd, 2020 at 10:50 PM ^
Life was like a box of chocolates.

It’s not a cliche, it is indeed life. Young man has a tremendous opportunity to come to UM for a great experience. If he’s as good as I am sure he is, he can play for the next coach. Really don’t understand the pushback on my original comment at all. We’re talking football at a world class university, not life or death here. 25 years ago I was hired by a good man who I thought would be my mentor. He left literally 2 weeks after hiring me for another opportunity. I’m still there now 25 years later mentoring young professionals. It turned out well for me as it can for this kid playing a game.
My kid committed as a pitcher to play collegiate baseball and the pitching coach who recruited him left before his freshman season. He’s still there now as a senior and loves the college and program. It happens everywhere!
Get over yourselves. The kid will be fine. Anyone watching Michigan’s defense the last 3 years should of known this was coming.

“Should have known.”

Thanks for the grammar lesson on a sports blog. Look up Adler and “overcompensation” Napoleon!

If you’re content being illiterate I’m sure there’s an MSU website happy to have you. Otherwise you should welcome the instruction.
December 23rd, 2020 at 8:57 PM ^
I have a very good education with multiple degrees. Perhaps you are in need of some character education. Happy Holidays to you nonetheless!
December 23rd, 2020 at 9:50 PM ^
Oh, well. Know you next time, Mr. Gatsby!
December 23rd, 2020 at 10:04 PM ^
It’s obvious you like pulling people over and giving out tickets. Try to remember that assuming makes an ass out of you, but not me.
December 23rd, 2020 at 9:53 AM ^
And if your or son chose to leave, that'd be okay too.
December 23rd, 2020 at 1:25 PM ^
No. Not really! He committed to the psychology program first because of its coveted reputation and the head coach (still there BTW) second. He made a commitment and stuck to it to see it through. You aren’t “entitled” to anything in this life as a sure thing.
December 23rd, 2020 at 7:28 PM ^
My “or son”?
Proper grammar is the problem here? Idiots.
December 23rd, 2020 at 8:58 PM ^
It’s a blog smart ass, not my doctoral dissertation. Get a life troll.
December 23rd, 2020 at 9:59 AM ^
Good for you. Wouldn't blame you or your kid if you decided that wasn't for you. Culture is a big problem for people and working for or with someone you don't like isn't good for anyone.
December 23rd, 2020 at 1:34 PM ^
How does a kid know if the “university” he committed to, not just one coach, is a “culture” problem when he hasn’t even stepped into a team meeting yet as an actual member of the team? Should these young men be committing to just one DC? Or should they be committing to a university and team program (Yeah..in that order)? Priorities and ability to adapt are lost arts in this world.
December 22nd, 2020 at 10:49 PM ^
Frankly, Don Brown aside, Life has apparently already thrown Mr. Colson plenty of curve balls and he seems to handle them quite well.
December 23rd, 2020 at 1:52 AM ^
Yeah, but every level of life is a new challenge. Obviously anyone with a brain and heart should pull for this young man’s success, but now he has to deal with change. We’ll see how he deals with it. You and I are not omniscient enough to know at this point.
December 23rd, 2020 at 1:27 PM ^
Only an “entitled” person would thumbs down my comment made above. Or someone who can’t read.
December 22nd, 2020 at 10:27 PM ^
He says "there is nothing I can do", but I am pretty sure he can be released from his LOI since his position coach/coordinator left. Is that not the case?
December 22nd, 2020 at 10:57 PM ^
My understanding is that he been request it, but Michigan won't necessarily grant it
Though I see no upside for Michigan blocking his release
December 22nd, 2020 at 10:28 PM ^
Well I hope he sticks with Michigan and becomes Freshman Colson
December 22nd, 2020 at 10:31 PM ^
Here’s the thing. Colson had to have questions. If he asked directly and was lied to it’s worse. He should be let out of his LOI.
December 22nd, 2020 at 10:33 PM ^
He may want to see where DB ends up going, and if he coaches somewhere he likes, then he could follow him to play Viper as he was recruited to do. I hope he does NOT and stays to find out if he fits with the new DC. I wonder when the deadline is to ask out of his LOI?
December 22nd, 2020 at 10:34 PM ^
Following closely, was he?
December 22nd, 2020 at 11:16 PM ^
Don't tell him about Keith Jackson.
December 22nd, 2020 at 10:36 PM ^
He clearly didn't watch the team's performance through the year, or pay any attention to it...
December 22nd, 2020 at 10:37 PM ^
I mean .... nobody knows what was said to him. We presume DB may have alluded, but we’ll never know. In the end, he has option to opt out of LOI I thought. He also has option to see who new coach is and if he would fit the scheme. Sometimes you need to deal with alittle uncertainty until the picture clears up.
December 22nd, 2020 at 10:55 PM ^
I’m not sure the LOI would matter this year anyway. He could use this as his 1 transfer and head to another school.
December 22nd, 2020 at 10:38 PM ^
Really, no idea of the current situation?
December 22nd, 2020 at 10:39 PM ^
Clearly Colson doesn’t read this blog or he would’ve only been surprised if DB stayed. - If he was on this site, he would’ve known DB was fired around the end of the third quarter during the msu game.
December 23rd, 2020 at 4:51 AM ^
We weren't wrong.
MGoBlog: free recruiting consulting.
December 23rd, 2020 at 8:21 AM ^
True, also the fact that we have any recruits at all proves they don't read the blog
December 22nd, 2020 at 10:40 PM ^
He's one of the all in dudes from this recruiting class. I had assumed he was paying attention... guess not.
December 22nd, 2020 at 10:46 PM ^
Is the portal an option for new recruits that just signed their NLI? Do they have to graduate high school first before entering the portal with this one time exemption rule?
December 22nd, 2020 at 11:11 PM ^
Excellent question, I'm glad you asked. Surprisingly I have no idea what the answer is.
December 23rd, 2020 at 1:00 AM ^
Yes he can enter the portal. Bru McCoy did this last year. Entered the portal 17 days after signing then entered the portal again 6 months later.
December 23rd, 2020 at 4:53 AM ^
Good lord, kids are entering the Portal straight out of high school. Next up: middle school.
December 22nd, 2020 at 10:55 PM ^
Anyone who thought he was returning, didn’t watch Michigan football from Nov 24 2018 until today. If he wants out, we should release him from his LOI, but it’s not like this was unexpected.
December 22nd, 2020 at 11:32 PM ^
It is concerning. By the same token, we do not have a great number of defensive recruits over the last couple of years and that's also Don Brown's fault. Hopefully it will be corrected with whomever is the new DC and we can get some transfer portal people to quickly shore up the problem areas.
December 22nd, 2020 at 11:36 PM ^
Of course players can be upset, but this also shouldn't be shocking to any recruits if they've been paying attention at all to the program
December 23rd, 2020 at 7:20 AM ^
Unless of course, they were told he would be coaching next year?
December 22nd, 2020 at 11:45 PM ^
This feels like laying the ground to back out honorably or some such. From what I had heard Colson was one of the drivers of sticking with the class and his Mom was a big Michigan fan. Maybe they're having second thoughts and this is the reed they're seizing on to back out of the LOI. Who the hell knows? Hopefully it gets smoothed over as I thought he had a chance to really blow up.
