This is a high risk-high reward strategy because of the morale and coaching problems it might create. It’s more than just championship or bust for the year. It could be bust for several years or a generation.
But there is a happy medium. And overall I wish we had more talent coming aboard but not so much that we create this kind of logjam potential that can lead to malcontents.

School of mercenaries.
January 21st, 2024 at 6:56 PM ^
I feel like "school" only applies extremely loosely to Ohio, more so in the "fish" way than in the traditional definition.
January 21st, 2024 at 4:25 PM ^
can we get one of those portal quarterbacks?
January 21st, 2024 at 5:00 PM ^
Not until they know who their god damned coach will be, probably.
January 21st, 2024 at 4:26 PM ^
I thought Michigan was going to bring Ohio State down with all the dirt they had. Seems like our administration and regents just gave up in late November with the TRO. Now we are just going to let OSU cheat.
January 21st, 2024 at 4:26 PM ^
You do realize that they already had a five star QB don’t you?
January 21st, 2024 at 4:42 PM ^
That “binder” never did materialize did it? Or maybe it did and the NCAA selectively didn’t give a rats ass, smells like anti-trust to me.
January 21st, 2024 at 5:30 PM ^
I would guess a lot of what Michigan may have is pay to play stuff which absolutely no one cares about anymore.
Im still hoping OSUs link to signgate or their link to taking Catapult practice footage comes out
January 21st, 2024 at 5:39 PM ^
They definitely care check the case against Florida State and Florida. They can’t do much about NIL, but they can enforce the pay to play because that is against the rules and the SEC is pissed about OSU buying players off their teams. That’s the one thing the NCAA isn’t going to let slide. It won’t happen immediately but bad things are coming for OSU, especially with the AD they hired. The NCAA hates him and wants to get the outright open buying of other players under control.
January 21st, 2024 at 7:45 PM ^
This is a good point. OSU and its reckless new AD have moved into the SEC mob's territory. They are not going to take that sitting down.
That a Big Ten school (us!) beat the SEC champion on the way to the National Championship has already frosted their ass. They are not going just sit by and watch it happen year after year. Look at Lane's tweet for example.
OSU is in the crosshairs of some very powerful and influential people.
January 21st, 2024 at 10:25 PM ^
We arent OSU, Bama, Texas A and M or Miami but we have a "one more year" fund.
Its kind of hilarious that that may be several times worse than cheeseburgers or sign-gate. We are paying the players to stay another year. And to be clear I am TOTALLY for it but its a pay to play fund and absolutely 0% for any kind of NIL deal. Its wild that we have titles stating we are paying to play and they dont care. Cheeseburgers though? Holy shit wont anyone think of the children?
January 21st, 2024 at 6:42 PM ^
Well, we apparently let OSU employ a goblin as a basketball coach for years without doing anything about it.
January 21st, 2024 at 4:26 PM ^
He isn’t starting next year.
January 21st, 2024 at 4:32 PM ^
Howard is likely starting QB next season. If Sayin stays, he would likely start the following season.
January 21st, 2024 at 5:07 PM ^
How sure is that? Since it’s bob’s boy, I’d imagine he would be the front runner for starting? But if your scenario happens, I’d imagine that pushes Air back to UGA and one of the two: kleinholz and Brown transfers? Oh I hope they implode.
January 21st, 2024 at 10:27 PM ^
Nolan "I dont want to be with 5 - five star QBS at osu!
"Then where are you going to go?"
Nolan "Ill go join the 5 - five star QBs at Georgia"
BRILLIANT!
January 21st, 2024 at 5:32 PM ^
Id bet Howard was essentially promised the job. If the guy wants to try to elevate his draft stock, you don’t do that on the bench.
January 21st, 2024 at 7:49 PM ^
Howard signed up before O'Brien was named OC.
January 21st, 2024 at 4:26 PM ^
Desperation mode... this the death rattle...after they lose next year, it'll be the coach fired and a slew of transferds.
January 21st, 2024 at 10:31 PM ^
Dude if a pant shitting 3 point output vs Mizzou (a team that recruits well below even Michigan) and that turd is drawing them in I dont know what to tell you. Wins matter to fans $$$$ and NFL are the only thing that matters to players anymore, I guess.
How they can look worse than they have their last two games is beyond me. I just dont think players care anymore.
January 21st, 2024 at 4:29 PM ^
Not sure how they are going to keep everyone happy there. Gotta think these new guys are getting some pretty sweet $$$ All the guys that have been 'true buckeyes' can't be happy with these new guys taking all the money.
January 21st, 2024 at 4:29 PM ^
Check cleared.
This is becoming such a departure from "school sports" anymore that it's a shameful farce.
January 21st, 2024 at 6:16 PM ^
CF has been a "shameful farce" for the last 3 or 4 decades
January 21st, 2024 at 4:31 PM ^
They’re tryin really hard to beat our 15-0 record..
I wish we had even an average NIL program
January 21st, 2024 at 5:09 PM ^
Right!? When Seth was talking about us having Indiana/Iowa money on the podcast i was stunned.
January 21st, 2024 at 4:31 PM ^
And all these recent moves are before the AD who fired up the A&M money cannon (I know he's incompetent in other areas) arrives. I'm enjoying the championship honeymoon but it's hard to ignore that OSU is much more set up to succeed than us for the next decade.
January 21st, 2024 at 6:29 PM ^
When I think of successful football programs, I sure think of Texas A&M and one-playoff-win-in-the-last-decade OSU
January 21st, 2024 at 10:33 PM ^
Alabama and Georgia are the talent juggernauts.
A and M is more like the old Ole Miss teams. Great recruiting classes for a couple years are fine but not when they leave after a season.
OSU is way more Bama/Georgia even though I dont want to admit it.
January 21st, 2024 at 4:31 PM ^
Not worried. They couldn't beat us with CJ Stroud.
I imagine there will be a large exodus from that QB room within the next year.
January 21st, 2024 at 4:37 PM ^
We've been spoiled with Macdonald and Minter - both elite NFL-level DC's. Odds are we are losing Minter and that worries me more than who OSU does or does not have on their roster.
January 21st, 2024 at 4:51 PM ^
I’m a bit worried. At some point talent accumulation can work-look at Alabama, albeit the coaching there is better than Ohio State. I’m astonished how little impact winning 3 Big 10 titles has done for our recruiting. We do need at least some elite recruits, no matter how good the coaching is.
January 21st, 2024 at 4:54 PM ^
Ohio State has been stacked these last three years. Bama was the most "talented" team in college football this year and we beat them.
January 21st, 2024 at 7:50 PM ^
But we don't have team 144 anymore that did it. At some point, you have to restock the shelf. I'm . . . not seeing it.
January 21st, 2024 at 10:50 PM ^
Yeah, I'm in the same boat. It doesn't look like we're reloading, but rather rebuilding especially on offense. It's hard to us maintaining this level and it looks like next year will be a step back.
January 21st, 2024 at 5:33 PM ^
We’ll see but Saban is a much better coach than Day is. Day keeps trying to win with QBs and WRs. Dude needs to figure out how to build an o-line
January 21st, 2024 at 7:50 PM ^
Shhhhhh!
January 21st, 2024 at 4:57 PM ^
Couldn't even beat us in Columbus with Stroud and MHJ.
January 21st, 2024 at 4:33 PM ^
All of this money and they aren’t fixing the problem. They still have Day, and the only OL “upgrade” was bringing in Snappy Musketballs to play center.
January 21st, 2024 at 5:13 PM ^
Believe they grabbed a starting guard from Ohio, too. Not sure if that translates though
January 21st, 2024 at 5:36 PM ^
Yep. Theyre still downgrading at qb and wr most likely and the worst center Ive ever watched doesnt change the OL. Knowles is gonna be carrying that team again
January 21st, 2024 at 8:45 PM ^
Maybe Day's planning on playing three quarterbacks at the same time. The snap has to go to one of them, right?
January 21st, 2024 at 4:33 PM ^
Ask Jimbo how well buying a championship team works. (Well was awesome for him personally, just not aTm).

Honestly this will be a big test of my theory that Ryan Day is a shit coach and can’t win no matter how much talent he has. I’m pretty confident in that theory so I’m really enjoying Buckeye fans getting their hopes up.
In addition, this gives me great joy to see how much money they are spending in response to their arch rivals winning a title. They are down bad…considering the gigantic superiority complex they had until recently it is very fulfilling to see them scrambling to turn the tides again.
January 21st, 2024 at 4:38 PM ^
