Jim Harbaugh, please stay at Michigan

Submitted by b618 on January 11th, 2024 at 8:26 PM

I've heard Coach Harbaugh talk about being appreciated and wanted. I've read articles talking about how much it means to him.

The excellent President Ono is doing a great job of it. At least one Regent, Jordan Acker, seems to be doing a good job of it.

We fans certainly cheer and show our joy. We know we love Coach Harbaugh, the players, the other coaches -- this magnificent TEAM.

But it might be useful for us to say so in direct terms in one topic.

Maybe this could be seen by Coach Harbaugh, whereas posts scattered here and there in other topics would not. Maybe what we say is not of much impact on his decision, but it doesn't hurt for us to try. Maybe there is another thread here on MGoBlog that already did this. I looked around and didn't see one. I won't hurt to have another even so.

Jim Harbaugh would probably love that and I am being dead serious when I say that. Jim Harbaugh is so different than most any other coach I have ever seen. I wouldn’t even be surprised if he has a login account for this blog. Please come back Jim. I cannot think of any other player who could be a better fit and coach for our team. At least until any player of Team 144 decides to enter into the coaching profession.

Don’t print out this thread from just over three years ago, when plenty here wanted him fired. Harbaugh’s smart enough to know fans only love you when you’re winning. A couple of disappointing years and it would right back to this:

Coach Harbaugh, please stay at Michigan.

Part of this is selfish on my part, of course. Michigan football has the vital essence, the fire, the tradition, the glory, that for me the NFL will never approach.

I don't think I'm alone in feeling that way, though, looking at reactions like this:

Rich Eisen's emotion

The fan shouting "We f*ing love you!"

Ann Arbor singing

Times reporter's life transformed by Michigan-football fandom.

But there are aspects that do matter beyond fan feelings. In college football, you, Coach Harbaugh, play a major part in guiding and improving the lives of young men. You are an important teacher, a mentor, and a father figure. There are men who are better -- better husbands, better fathers -- because of you.

This story you tell, you are the one doing that now:

Also, this is perhaps the most-pivotal time in college-football history. It is a time where it will be decided whether or not players get a portion of the enormous revenue generated by college football. You -- a legendary football coach, a major media presence, the Head Coach of Michigan -- can be a major force in that process.

Coach Harbaugh, whether you stay or leave, you are a great Michigan Man.

But there are still so many more lives you can improve by staying.

Please stay, Coach Harbaugh.

@b18 JJ talks to the crowd on the Fox2 video of the team returning to Ann Arbor. He can't speak because the crowd goes wild and starts the "one more year" chant. When JJ breaks that chant he says, "I don't know how I could leave y'all."

He also seems very emotional, but makes it through a response which includes:

1. Everything about this place has just made it home to me.

2. I love you guys so much, you are part of the team.

I don't think he has made up his mind yet about his future in any external manner. I think at that moment he was exhausted and did his best to show a positive response. I also believe he doesn't want to leave for an unknown professional future when he's got this all going for him. I'm sure he and Jim have some aligning to work on. Over cheeseburgers (unless JJ is a vegan), the conversation is going to go like, "So coach, if you stay, I'll stay, if you go, you'd better draft me..."

This board is littered with Harbaugh love.  Not sure how much clearer we can make.

I suppose we can all go streaking on S University with "I heart Harbaugh" tattooed on our backs, and end with bear hugs?

Of course, I want him here, but I also very much want him to pursue the NFL if that’s what he wants. He only has so many years of coaching left and it would be a shame if looked back and felt some regret for not pursuing a Super Bowl ring. If he wants to be here, then that’s awesome, but he’s also given us something nobody else could and he would be leaving in fantastic shape if he left.

The joy this man, this staff, this team has given us over the past 3 years can never be taken away.

Jim Harbaugh, godspeed, whatever you decide.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
