I saw this tweet and realized both people in this picture are Michigan coaches. It reminded me of the day we hired Jay Harbaugh and all the skepticism from our fans and downright disrespect from rival fans. Many thought he was under qualified and hired based on nepotism.

After 2 years, how do you feel about this hire in hindsight? I initially thought he wouldn't get a fair shake as a TE coach on our staff because even if the position group plays well, he wouldn't get the credit for it and that has pretty much held true.

How do you guys feel about him today?

I think this question will be answered next season now that Butt is gone. It will be good to see how the other TEs have developed. Based on flimsy evidence in the bowl game, I would say Bunting has developed well which tells me Jay is doing his job.

Lets not forget he brough us Jumpman so regardless of his coaching ability, he has improved the program. Just having the Jumpman on our jersey helps in recruiting and differentiates us from everyone else.

I think it's hard to say but I definitely feel like the TE group is living up to their recruiting rankings which is more than we've said for other position groups over the years. ST seemed good this year too - esp blowing up the spread punt if that was his discovery. So far so good

I think special teams did well for the most part this year.  Aside from the missed FGs, the only big issues were in the Wisconsin game with several illegal motion penalties.  I believe those were cleared up as the year went along. As Brian mentioned on the front page, the late return vs FSU can't really be pinned on anyone in partiular.  Allen kicked it to the endzone and the returner hesitated then brought it out.

He's also a good recruiter so he's got that going for him, which is nice.

I know there was more than a small amount of concern in regard to STs with Coach P and Jay taking over. I have no idea if Kenny realized what was wrong that particular game and corrected it himself or if one of the coaches caught it. Most important, of course, we experienced one bad game from our FG kicker that did not cost us and overall the STs play was outstanding this year.

I don't know Jay's pedigree as to the TE position, but it's a good bet he understands the fundamentals of nearly every position, given his background. I see nothing wrong with a father supplying a helping hand. In this instance, there are certain things we don't have to question. As a Harbaugh, there is a 99% chance he will have an extremely strong work ethic and there is little doubt in my mind he quickly secured the information needed to not only understand the full range of duties of the TE position but also did all that was required from a physical standpoint in order to properly demonstrate the correct techniques associated with the position. He is, after all, a Harbaugh, and the likelihood of him achieving success in the coaching profession is pretty much a given.

And due to the father/son relationship, there is little doubt in my mind who the hardest working assistant is on the team. I was quite impressed by what Eubanks had to say about him in regard to his recruitment. He said Coach Harbaugh (Jay) demonstrated how Michigan intended to utilize their TEs and was extremely impressed at being "shown things I was not aware a TE could do."

Was an extremely low risk hire and a team just can't have too many Harbaughs.

Allen's issue was corrected by Jim Harbaugh - as credited by Allen and one of the assistants (but I don't remember which one).  JMFH noticed that his timing was too fast for most kickers, he was kicking the ball in1.3 seconds, instead of 2.1 seconds (numbers pulled out of air, but it was some timing issue like that).  The difference turned out to be Allen mashing together punt and kick timing.  He concentrated on correcting that and was money the rest of the season.  Both parties said JMFH just noticed it on film and mentioned it in passing one day in a meeting room.

Jim MF'ing Harbaugh is AWESOME!!!!

Objectively, 247 credits Jay H as the "recruiter" (er, nice to be able to refer the recruit up to JH/Dad) on McCaffery, Tarik, TEs Asiasi (score!), Eubanks and McKeon, among others, including O'Maury (fingers crossed).  Coaching-wise, I was impressed by the development this late-season of Ian Bunting (Jake Butt didn't need too much coaching up).

Subjectively and personally, I got the opportunity to work with my late Dad for 10 years in our little 2-man shop in the 90's, and as Dad liked to tell people, "never a cross word between us," (true).  So, I'm biased, but I think it's been fine for the program on the 'crootin trail as well as on the field, and if you back JH's family (and/or have kids yourself), you've got to get a smile out of this experience that father & son are having in contributing together to the legacy of the finest public university in the world.

I don't think it has anything to do with jay but I was frustrated the tight ends weren't more involved besides blocking this season. Butt obviously made his plays but beyond him there didn't seem to be a lot of short passes to tight ends which I thought we would see a lot more.

TE performance, recruiting, special teams/solving the spread punt for a while, train, ability to relate to current players have all been stellar. A++ and I hope he's here for a long time. He has a bright future and is building quite the resume for when he branches out on his own.

As competitive as his Dad is, I can't imagine Jim would hire someone who wasn't ready - even a son.  Jay seems to be a good recruiter and the TE position looked strong when Butt was out for the bowl game. Yes I realize that's a pretty small sample size.  Some of that competitiveness had to have gone to Jay too. I think he's doing a good job.

he also has been quite creative in aiding Jim's playcalls. I think Jay came up with train too. Will be interesting to see how Bunting and Wheatley pan out.

TE group could not be stronger. Special teams were like the Bomb great. Give me more of Jay and we would be happy. Nepotism works in football as long as the apple doesn't fall to far from the tree! So here we are ... JACK to JOHN to JIM to JAY ... the F-ing four H-men. God damn, we have the Harbaugh family cornered !!! Thanks be to God.

knows that failure is not an option. My dad worked for my grandfather at Little Caesars for 16 years. A lot was expected of him and he had to do a great job. No other choice. Jay has expectations to contend with that no other on the staff have to worry about.

He continue to improve and I expect one day in the future another team will hire him away as an OC. He will probably become a good coach then replace his Father as Michigan coach when Jim decides to retire in 2030.

As someone mentioned, I also think that this will be an interesting group to watch now that Butt is not here, but so far, so good with the TEs under Jay Harbaugh, I would say. They truly were an asset and they should continue to be an asset in this offense. Also, he seems to be a pretty damn good recruiter.

Not trying to bring this up again, but I think this is important to mention to show his impact as a recruiter. I originally was under the impression that Wheatley was the guy that made the largest impact on Najee, but Sam mentioned either yesterday or the day before that Jay was actually the coach who brought Michigan into the fold with him. He was relentless in their pursuit with Najee, which led to nearly pulling off the miracle. Again, I'm only saying this to say that I believe Jay is perhaps our most underrated recruiter. Kids relate with him more since he's younger, and I'm extremely happy he's on this staff. His position groups haven't been lacking, so it's hard to see a negative with him.

improved this year under Jay. I mean how often has Michigan ST play been an afterthought over the years. And in a season where this program did not benefit from many turnovers, the work of ST was instrumental in capturing a lot of hidden yardage which led to easy scores, especially early in the year. Michigan not only produced a dynamite punter and kicker, but it was dangerous on all returns and forced other schools to avoid kicking to our primary return guys whether they were Peppers or others. That is a sign of respect. Of course, it certainly helps having Superman as your primary returner. But how many teams returned blocked extra points for scores this season? And when has Michigan done that before? Probably never, since the rule has only been in place allowing that for a short time.

In any case, any way you look at it, Michigan got better in ST throughout the season. And Jay Harbaugh took over a job that his dad had specifically hired a guru the year before to cover. Now, maybe Jay learned a lot in that transitional process, but he certainly showed results this year including having the best holder in the country. Of course, we did have a kickoff defense gaffe against Florida State that probably cost us big time, but mistakes happen under every circumstance. He was also the primary recruiter for Najee Harris, and while he failed to land him, he came close in landing him after he was already committed to Alabama.

honest he got the job becasue of nepotisim.  If he was not the head coaches son he never would've sniffed a position coaches job at a P5 school with his back ground. If he had been Joe Smith peolpe would've asked why were we hiring him with such little experience. Normally he would've had to start at a lower level and worked his way up.

Now in saying that I am confident he has learned a ton from his Dad and Uncle over time and may end up being as good as his Dad someday.  TE coach does get help from both the OL coach and WR coach, so that makes his transition a little smoother.

I think he has the makings of being a top flight coach one day and shows he is already very good on the recruiting trail. I suspect he will climb the coaching ladder over time and eventually be a head coach. I like what I see from him already.

He is a great recruiting asset, as Jim's sidekick. Lots of incidental benefits here, as he is young and can relate, and do a lot of legwork on the road for Jim. A great hire. Especially nabbing Asiasi who is a star.
