Congrats fellow DCDS, UM grad

In this world of scandal and the oft-venal, hateful arena of today that so often diminishes us, I'm thankful for the reset and opportunity to celebrate the positive with which seemingly small events sometimes provide us, such as the accomplished young life of Maurice Ways.

Maurice, as a grateful and delighted father of 3, I can't imagine being more proud of a young man than you, at the just-beginning age of 21 having earned a DCDS diploma, a U-M degree, pushed yourself to the pinnacle of competing on the field in the Big House... and with all this only just the beginning of your journey.

While it's so easy for me to sink in the mire of wins and losses, I am truly inspired and, if only briefly, renewed, to think for a moment of a young man of talent, character and commitment rising to continue proving his worth at the finest public university in the world.

Michigan is just the best.  Godspeed and thank you, Maurice.

Former Red Wing Gerry Hart...

...is another Flin Flon notable.  He went to the Islanders (I believe in the expansion draft), and later had stints with the Blues and the Nordiques, if I recall correctly.

Short, tough-as-nails stay-at-home defenseman with a great 70's Fu Manchu.

Flin Flon Bombers alumnus, teammate of Clarke there I believe.

If press-man becomes an issue...

...what would be the most likely scheme solutions?  Some sort of zone help?

And if so, what ramifications would that have on the nature of the rest of the scheme?

We talk alot about the DL, but...

...to me the bigger wild card at this point, for the "floor" and "ceiling" of this Fall's defense, is the all-young CB position group.

It seems to me that with the DL, we know the starting 4 are superb, and then mistakes by the very young rotational backups will have a chance to be more easily cleaned up by the LBs and safeties/viper (in the run game if not the pass-pressure/time game) at the second level.

Meanwhile, CB seems harder to learn and master the intricacies of, and one mistake by one guy can instantly create a big play against.

Couple that with the understandable modesty of "wow" buzz we've heard about Lavert (dinged up) and DLong (applying his great physical & leadership tools to the learning curve) and I think maybe we've been a little complacent about replacing our two upperclassman NFL CBs because the new kids are such highly-rated recuiting prizes.

Can't wait to see coach Brown make the D maximize all the talent, but does anyone else think CB group might be bigger issue than DL?

JH "meritocracy" standard seems crystal-clear...

...so I wonder if that clears away a lot of those murky issues about justifying such decisions to the team, etc., compared to other coaches/programs.

I'd be surprised if the players, having observed both QBs every day in practice by September, didn't understand and accept a performance-based decision by the coaching staff either way.

Plus, I don't think the players would look at Peters over Speight at that point a "benching" -- I think they'd perceive it as one guy rising to win the job over the other in a competition.

I think that's one (of many) reasons why JH is seen and proven as a successful leader -- his organization clearly understands what the expectations and benchmarks are, and he sticks with those clear guidelines.

Thanks for posting...

...the opportunity to help.  Cute kid and DIPG sounds like a tough one.  Glad the campaign is doing well for her and family so far.

Aren't we at 18 total now?

I thought as of this morning the total was 18:

11 guys drafted (U-M record, 3rd all-time vs. fOSU's 14, and 12 for fOSU and YTM in past years) -- and then 7 guys got UDFA deals last night:  Magnuson, Godin, Stribling, Dymonte, Kalis, De'Veon, and Kenny Allen.

It would be interesting to know that all-time record: Draft picks-plus-UDFAs from a single school in one draft year.

(Side note:  I can't believe NW's Austin Carr (PFF's highest-rated collegiate receiver) didn't get drafted -- but I CAN believe it was the New England Patriots who swooped in and nabbed him as an UDFA last night.)

Agree on both counts, BiP, and question...

You described my feeling exactly.  For me it was the "appointment viewing" of watching the Da'Shawn Hand reveal on TV that gives me the shakes here.

And your second point on DTs/DEs was my question (for any and all out there)...  I see many references to our lack of DTs in this class beyond Paea, but don't both James Hudson as well as Deron Irving-Bey have the bulk to play DT?  They're 285-290 now as high school kids, you'd think they'd fill out to 300-plus in a college strength program, no?

I'm sure there's alot about technique, pad level at their height (6'5"), etc. etc. that make it more than just weight, but is there really this dearth of prospective interior DL raw material in this class, even before Solomon?

Great points, plus... who's the victim?

Re the original OP question, there's virtually no incentive cost/benefit -wise for the clean recruit to whistle-blow, as insightfully detailed above.

Further, I think there is no constituency of clear, morally-wronged victims to support such a movement.

The recruits have freedom of choice as to risk going dirty for money for the family and getting a P5 degree, or staying clean to avoid hassles and getting a P5 degree.  Their personal choice.

The SEC/ACC/OSU bagman money isn't being filched from the poorbox at the local parish; it comes from dudes up the food chain in the booster network forgoing another new set of golf clubs or another weekend in Vegas.  Further, it's not money from an Athletic Department (shortchanging women's softball) or a University account (creating a shortfall for the Gender Studies field trip) -- money from Ath. Dept./Univ. accounts would be too easy to trace and prosecute under state funding/misappropriation -- that's why it's all cash (and/or 3rd-party auto leases to "uncles" from car-dealer boosters, etc.).

Short of abstract philosophical discussion about amateurism and morals, the only obvious victims are fans of "clean" (or comparatively "clean") schools and programs like ours... and I think most of us accept that disadvantage with a stiff upper lip for the greater good of U-M.

Happy for Mr.Wheatley, sad for me...

...there was just something about having him as one of the re-builders of JH's program that felt so comforting and powerful.  I also thought it was so cool that he got to work with his son every day in practice and on the sideline.

But, he's obviously a driven man and sees this as his next step up and forward in a lifetime of accomplishment, so Godspeed Mr. Wheatley; selfishly, I can't wait to see you back again at Michigan down the road.

Since 5pm, 2 CBallz from Georgia guys and 1 from Ohio guy...

...like where this is goin'... ...wonder if they're climbing a tree or settling in for the sleepover now... seeing some whole milk and steak disappearing...

Yes, Leatherwood himself had said it...

...per Chris Kirschner at SECcountry (not $):

"Of note, Alex Leatherwood, the nation’s No. 2 offensive tackle, before early enrolling at Alabama, told SEC Country numerous times that if Cristobal did ever leave the school, he would have likely explored his options and re-opened his recruitment. He can’t do that now because he’s already at Alabama and has practiced with the team."

Alas.

I love your plan for Partridge...

...but I truly feel that teams are going to come calling for him long before 5 years from now...

...especially if he further bolsters his on-field resume by being part of molding D Bush Jr, Metellus/Glasgow/K Hudson, Furbush and others around Mike McCray into a stellar unit in Don Brown's attacking D behind Mattison's top-notch starting DL next year, and also has early and notable success with our monster 2017 freshman LB class (Ross, Anthony, Singleton, plus maybe Gay), in addition to continuing his nationally-recognized recruiting prowess.

Agree, the truly elite programs just reload with staff talent...

...and the discussion above brought into focus for me that we're quickly back in that group with JH.

Bama loses guys like Smart, McIlwain and Kiffin and gets guys like Pruitt and Sarkisian; Urban loses the Tom Hermans and Tim Becks of the world, meanwhile easily adding proven P5 program-building types like Kevin Wilson and Greg Schiano as underlings (love 'em or hate 'em).  I put maybe Oklahoma under Stoops in that category (Wilson, Venables), and perhaps USC (despite a bumpier flow in & out of Carroll, Kiffin, Sark, Orgeron et. al.) -- and both remain Top 5 programs today.

Now, under JH, MIchigan attracts a pipeline of valuable assets like DJ Durkin and Jedd Fisch, and when they move up & out, we reload with talent like Don Brown and Pep Hamilton.  Feeling very in-line with today's "elite" to me, especially compared to the previous 7 to 10 years (incubator for... Ron English?  Mike DeBord?  Scott Shafer?  Al Borges? -- no offense intended, appreciate their service, but very different).

So the Cristobal discussion brought me through above and to the future:  I'll bet it's on JH's strategic radar as to how to keep Chris Partridge as long as possible -- I didn't quite realize Partridge is already a Top 5 recruiter in the nation per 247 -- and a career path on our D staff is unclear at the moment.

(FWIW I feel (hope?) that Ty Sr. (another 247 Top 5 National Recruiter -- Cristobal is #2) will want to stay for the duration of Ty Jr's career to savor the unusual father-son opportunity.)

Saban may have had the same thought...

...inasmuch as he fast-tracked an in-home visit by OC Sark and G/C coach Brent Key to the Wills household in KY yesterday... the very first day of the Contact Period after the Dead Period and, whaddaya know(!), the day before the Cristobal news was to break publicly...

Bama lean in 2015; now, UF and USF closer to home...

Impressive that Jake was a strong Alabama lean for most of his 2015 recruitment (by Lane Kiffin and Mario Cristobal) before a late push by Clemson, and Jake's dad John played OL at Bama for Ray Perkins and Bill Curry before a stint with the Miami Dolphins.

Some good pedigree stuff there.

But I wonder if, being from Tampa and transferring out of Clemson SC due to personal/family reasons, if UF isn't closer to home, just up the road in Gainesville... Further, wouldn't be surprised if Charlie Strong is already on the case, making a pitch for USF even closer to home, in Tampa right around the corner...

Still, SC media has Michigan in the mix... always a wise choice!

TigerNet has learned that Clemson offensive tackle Jake Fruhmorgen will transfer.

Fruhmorgen met with the Clemson coaches Thursday and told them of his decision.

...

Swinney went into the playoffs saying he was hopeful Fruhmorgen would be with the team next spring.

There's no word yet on where Fruhmorgen will wind up, but early possibilities seem to be Florida or Michigan.

Wow, lots of starts for CFP Clemson...

...last year's runner-ups as a true freshman (1 start, 11(!) games) and started the first 8 games this year at RT for the champs.  Had a shoulder injury in/after Clemson's FSU game this year then sat out, between that and a personal issue.  Per Coach Swinney at TigerNet.com on Nov. 9 (not $):

“Good news and bad news on Fruh. The good news is that he's improving on his shoulder,” Swinney said. “His shoulder is much better. There are no little issues, but he's got a personal issues with him and his family right now that he's dealing with. That's all I can say on that. His mom and dad are here. I will say this; he's never failed a drug test. He's not in any trouble, no team trouble. You can't have a more model player than Jake Fruhmorgen. He's as committed a guy as I've ever been around, as hardworking as I've ever been around, talented. He's the model of what you'd want as a player. It has nothing to do with anything that he's done or anything like that.

“Sometimes you forget, he's a big, old good looking strong guy and is a very talented football player, but sometimes we all forget that they're still young people and young people from time to time have issues in their personal life come up that can kind of get them off center and rock their world. He's dealing with a personal issue that's between him and his family. We're going to try to help him as much as we can and love him through it..."

Sounds like a great guy, hope his personal issues are solved for the best, and love to see him help us and get a Michigan degree.

Fire away and tell me why Brady Hoke...

...wouldn't be a legitimate candidate for this blue-sky musing about adding to the staff?  Maybe in the Football Operations category like Biff Poggi (since DL coach and Linebackers coach are currently very well-manned!); that might not even count aginast the 10?

Maybe in the very short run he could yet flip DT/NT Rutger Reitmaier, whom Brady recruited at -- and got to commit to -- Oregon, and long-term I think most here agree Brady is an excellent judge, finder and recruiter of DL talent specifcally (and D talent broadly), and would (as he did) convincingly pitch U-M to recruits with passion and sincerity.

JH made a specific point to thank Brady & his wife Laura at JH's opening address, for the foundation they built at Michigan football.  Hoke bleeds Maize and Blue, would have no desire to upset apple carts for personal career ambition or petty rivalry, and has no(?) political toxicity among U-M factions (unlike Les); Brady's only crime was to accept his dream job (from DB, who's long gone) and sadly prove to be simply in over his head at the P5 HC level.

So remind me of the obvious I'm overlooking (or unaware of)... why not?

(Also - Welcome, Pep!)

Good drill-down, Fishmonger...

...but further I believe that in addition to a civil suit (and not criminal prosecution) as you clarify, wouldn't the primary concern be enforcement (fines and/or citations) from US HHS, against the source's employer (UMHS), if the source is an employee of the "covered entity" (e.g., the hospital/health care system), no?

In other words, the source's employer could get cited and fined (HHS HIPAA fines can be huge), and I bet the source-person could be sanctioned by his/her "covered entity" employer for the HIPAA violation per his/her own Employment Agreement.

...In any case, yeah I think on topics throughout the site our zeal for information and opinion can quickly (though not maliciously) cross that line from a passion for info on our team to uncomfortable public discussion of 18- to 22-year olds' medical, academic, behavioral and/or personal (real or "hearsayed") situations.  ...So many interesting life lessons from Michigan football, and it never ends no matter how old one is!  ;)

Excellent HIPAA points by all, and...

... I had figured from the players' end that such a waiver would be part of their scholarship/enrollment/etc. paperwork signed; but further, I realize that as you guys point out, the coach would not be a "covered entity" under HIPAA... further complemented by the superb article at the utah.edu link, exploring the murkiness of the "covered entity"/sports-fans-expectations-to-know issues, complete with reference of the JPP case noted above.

So now, my longstanding question has been answered, thank you!

That's why I do love this site and our extended university family, whereas side-topic information on Eleven Warriors includes learning such as "Preferred Squirrel Kill-Shot Locations for Subsequent Taxidermy," or "Cinderblocks vs. Jacks: Choosing Your Ideal Support Option for Non-Running Vehicle Front Yard Display."

Now that HIPAA has been invoked...

...I've actually often wondered why a college football coach is allowed to step up to a podium in front of TV cameras and say things like "Well, the results of his MRI last night show that JoJo's got a partial tear in the ACL of his right knee..."

...when I have to sign a form and produce a driver's license in order for the gal at the doctor's office to tell me the results of my own cholesterol test.

Incredible work - Thanks!

Slideshow Bob, this is amazing.  Rollovers are addictive like watching a fire in the fireplace, and bookmarked for future work procrastinating for sure.

I had completely forgotten all I never knew about Jason Kates (339 lbs.), but now I wonder if agent supreme Maine Prince had any success marketing him as an NFL-ready DL with that 2013 YouTube promo highlights video...

Who's Got It Better?!

Objectively, 247 credits Jay H as the "recruiter" (er, nice to be able to refer the recruit up to JH/Dad) on McCaffery, Tarik, TEs Asiasi (score!), Eubanks and McKeon, among others, including O'Maury (fingers crossed).  Coaching-wise, I was impressed by the development this late-season of Ian Bunting (Jake Butt didn't need too much coaching up).

Subjectively and personally, I got the opportunity to work with my late Dad for 10 years in our little 2-man shop in the 90's, and as Dad liked to tell people, "never a cross word between us," (true).  So, I'm biased, but I think it's been fine for the program on the 'crootin trail as well as on the field, and if you back JH's family (and/or have kids yourself), you've got to get a smile out of this experience that father & son are having in contributing together to the legacy of the finest public university in the world.

On that 2018 TX TE...

...one day I hope to read his fond recollections of contributing to a national CFP title at Michigan in "The Autobiography of Malcolm Epps."
