Jalen Rose Laid Off by ESPN
Huge purge today at ESPN. Jalen and Jeff Van Gundy were let go, along with a bunch of other on-air personalities.
I could see Rose if
ESPN blows. Can't believe what's his face. The punter guy sold out to that dumpster fire.
McAfee's whole bit was to be as loud and obnoxious as possible. He fits right in at ESPN, imo.
Apparently, the list so far includes Jalen, Jeff Van Gundy, Max Kellerman, Suzy Kolber, Keyshawn Johnson, LaPhonso Ellis, Ashley Brewer (SC Anchor), and Joon Lee (baseball writer).

These days, I only watch ESPN for the sports. Rarely will I watch Sportscenter. I never watch any of the other talk shows.
Smartphones made Sportscenter irrelevant a long, long time ago.
I loved it in the early 90’s with Dan Patrick and Keith Olbermann in the morning. I would eat my Cinnamon Toast Crunch before Middle School and watch SportCenter.
It was great, even when they showed the same episode 10 times in a row, with an unbearable amount of ads for the ESPY’s.
Suzy Kolber on that list is the only thing that bothers me. She has been there forever and is outstanding on their Monday Night Football show.
Honestly can’t think of the last time I watched ESPN for anything? Maybe a MNF game?
ESPN is like an Applebees, TGIFridays, or a Chili’s. In the 1990’s early 2000’s we all loved them. Now you walk into one and it’s just sad.
This is a perfect metaphor.
And coincidentally those restaurants are probably the only place one can find ESPN still playing on the TV.
Oh shit! I'm going to Chili's tonight for dinner because my kids like the food there and I live in suburban America.
I’m in the Chicago Burbs now, and I’ll be damned if that Texas Roadhouse hasn’t been calling my name the last year. I feel like once I stop my transition from “City Folk” will be complete.
OK. So Texas Roadhouse is not bad IMO. The good news is that I convinced my wife to go to the "crab fest" at Red Lobster in Lincolnwood tonight.
Another Chicago suburbanite with kids who like Chili's lol
Tonight, though, we're grilling steak at home.
Mt. Pleasant has one of the only 11 Bennigan's restaurants left in the country. It's awesome.. like walking into a museum from the 90s.
The only time I was ever fired from a job I went to lunch knowing that when I got back that I was going to be let go. Had a Monte Cristo at Bennigan’s. Then I got fired.
On the plus side, when I got home I had a job offer waiting in my inbox. Luck of the Irish!
Same.
If UM games are not on it, I don't have a reason to watch aside NFL draft. Don't know who these dolts are who watch Steven A Smith or whomever for hours on end.
TGIFridays sucked even in the 1990s.
I disagree often with Jalen however I found much of the way in which he presented himself very listenable and thoughtful. As for ESPN and their decision(s) to infuse politics and social constructs into sports not so much.
Why did you have to drag Chili's into this?
ESPN's NBA pregame is unwatchable compared to TNT's
TNT’s nba broadcast production quality is the best there is for that league imo. The shaq-Charles rivalry is consistently great sports TV
They let a handful of regulars go, even Van Gundy and Suzy Kolber. Will be interesting to see where they land. Like to have Jalen at the BTN. Always outspoken, didnt always agree with him, but always interesting to watch.
How many spots are there. Some of these salaries are amazing. Johnson making $18M over 3? Who has ever turned the channel to listen to his insight.
I didn't even know Ellis still existed.
ESPN has been a dumpster fire for years.
Very rarely watch the channel.
Lmao they are getting rid of Todd McShay instead of Mel Kiper? What!?
Wow. Really surprised to read this. Enjoy listening to Jalen. Good luck Jalen.
Jalen is a Gold Nugget and he’ll land nicely.
Disappointed though he ran his mouth politically not long ago. The NBA has gotten political and according to reports the majority of fans believe sports and politics are a bad combo.
Here come the MGoMAGAs
In a country of free political thought all political beliefs should be welcome.
No matter how dumb it is
Too bad they can’t fire an opinionated blow hard like Steven A.
Smh, espn fell all the way off with this one
I never got the "crossover" appeal of listening to a Keyshawn Johnson talk about baseball or Max Kellerman talk about hockey and apparently most viewers didn't either.
I never understood the appeal of listening to Kellerman talk about anything.
I had to look him up and I still don't know who he is.
He's a legit boxing analyst but that is it.
He has hosted various ESPN shows for 20 years. If you recall, he was the original host of “Around the Horn,” which is on just before PTI in the Afternoon.
I think you’re selling him a little bit short. I have found his comments on the NFL, in particular, very insightful.
Kellerman is awful on everything thats isn’t boxing.
I saw Jalen on celebrity Jeopardy. What I learned is that he knows nothing, literally nothing, about anything except maybe basketball I guess. He was unable to get out of the hole on his score. He couldn’t answer even the most softball of general knowledge questions.
He is not a good representative of the University of Michigan.
Dude grew up in a tough part of Detroit, was raised by a single mother with an NBA father who didn't have a relationship with him, balled out at UM for 3 years, had a 10+ year NBA career while to my knowledge never got into any legal trouble whatsoever, then in retirement founded a public charter school that routinely graduates kids at much higher rates to great schools (while he fundraises for them), produced an incredible 30 for 30 about the Fab 5 that was somewhat correlative to a recruiting spike for our program, and is generally an extremely well-spoken and fun-loving individual.
I think Jalen is an excellent, excellent representative of the University of Michigan.
Maximus knows nothing, literally nothing, about Jalen Rose except maybe that he was on Jeopardy I guess. Success on Jeopardy has a lot to do with buzzer speed than knowing the correct responses to the clues.
Yeah, it was painful to watch. Embarrassing. He never should been on Jeopardy. I loved to watch him ball, but hearing him on ESPN I never thought he was very bright. Now after watching that episode of Jeopardy….I KNOW he isn’t very bright. He needs to stick to bball and bball only.
Please explain how you are a better representative of the university?
I haven't seen a comprehensive list, but enough names to ask myself the question, "Who is left, aside from some of the worst possible choices like Stephen A. Smith?"
Should we individually check to make sure ESPN didn't sack us even though no one here (that we are aware of) actually works there?
Apparently they're keeping Kendrick Perkins around, so if you enjoy watching a guy who rode the coattails of better players to a single title and who visibly groans under physical duress as he wanders around making nakedly-controversial statements just to get people to talk to him, strap in for a lot more of that.
The only logical explanation is that Perkins works for peanuts…literal peanuts and not cash.
Did he get caught sneaking in the truth?
Just one more reason not to watch ESPN unless absolutely necessary.
Years ago, I'd watch SportsCenter regularly. I can honestly say - I don't think I've watched a full episode - or - more than ten minutes of it - it in ten years.
GameDay for football is worth watching. And, if there's a good college football / hoops game - I'll tune in. Beside that - I can't recall.
Wishing Jalen well - I saw him in Indy for the B1G CCG in 2021.
Hoping he lands on his feet. Maybe he'll join CWebb on TNT.
Totally agree. Other than the actual games, College GameDay is the only thing I find worth watching on ESPN for more than 5 minutes.
They overpaid for TV deals while millions of people were cutting the cord. Or as Clay Travis puts it, they went woke and now are broke.
Overpaying for TV deals = “going woke”? Ok sure. -1 for quoting Clay Travis.
