It's a wrap on the "Shea maybe coming back" talk; he's playing in the Senior Bowl
Per the Twitters.

Good news for Shea. Senior Bowl is like a very well attended tryout camp. Wish him luck finding a team that drafts him.
December 17th, 2019 at 4:15 PM ^
Please forgive my ignorance, but what rule would make a player automatically ineligible to return to college football after playing in the Senior Bowl? There is no requirement that he hire an agent. I know it's something that simply isn't done (returning to school after with an exemption), but does that mean it cannot be done?
December 17th, 2019 at 4:53 PM ^
I believe they get paid to participate.
December 17th, 2019 at 5:48 PM ^
He could turn down the money.
Happens with NCAA golfers and tennis players often.
December 17th, 2019 at 9:31 PM ^
Or he could just accept the $ we could just wait and self report next year just prior to the Ball St. and Arkansas St. stretch of the schedule.
December 17th, 2019 at 3:01 PM ^
Looking forward to the people who wanted Shea benched for McCaffrey/Milton call for Milton/McCaffrey the first time he makes a mistake next season as first time starters usually do.
December 17th, 2019 at 3:14 PM ^
Dude...
December 17th, 2019 at 5:20 PM ^
Sweet.
December 17th, 2019 at 5:41 PM ^
DUDE.
December 17th, 2019 at 6:38 PM ^
BUT WHAT DOES MINE SAY!?!
December 17th, 2019 at 9:04 PM ^
SWWWWEEEEEEEEEEEEETTT!
December 17th, 2019 at 3:16 PM ^
I mean.....imagine what happens if they were to fumble on the first play of the season!!
these guys have experience, it’s not going to be a problem. Wish Shea all the luck in the world but it’s time we give Dylan a shot.
December 17th, 2019 at 4:30 PM ^
What has Dylan done to merit such confidence? I’m hoping (and expecting) for there to be a legit competition for the starting QB position. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised by McCaffrey or Milton winning.
December 18th, 2019 at 12:36 AM ^
Respect to Shea for two solid seasons, but his mistakes/lack of accuracy were maddening at times. When McCaffrey was in there, he seemed to see the field better, make good decisions and put the ball where it needed to be. We probably would have seen a lot more of him if not for the concussion.
What will next season bring? We'll see, but I think the reasons to feel good about McCaffrey were very legit.
December 17th, 2019 at 4:32 PM ^
This isn't pee wee...you don't "give (players) a shot."
They EARN the playing time and the best players play.
This isn't a fucking experiment. People need to quit with the "it's Dylan's turn" bullshit.
It was the fucking HEISMAN TROPHY WINNER'S "shot." OSU went and got another Heisman level QB and Burrow bolted after waiting his "turn."
I get the allure of a fresh face...but the "it's his turn" mantra drives me batshit crazy.
...continue.
Wait one more thing...90% of you all ready for McCaffrey or Milton are the people who SWORE John O'Korn deserved his "shot" behind Wilton Speight.
Remind me, how did that turn out for you? Was Harbaugh hiding a better QB on the bench because it wasn't his turn to play? Fuck outta here...this is D1 FBS Power 5 Football. Take that club sports bullshit elsewhere.
...okay, NOW continue...
December 17th, 2019 at 5:06 PM ^
Anytime someone uses any iteration of the phrase "give Player X a shot" I immediately tune them out and blindly assume they haven't played a competitive sport past the high school level.
December 17th, 2019 at 5:38 PM ^
Not fully disagreeing with you, but those have played competitive sports past high school also know that many people, coaches included, can be a sucker for the "Workout/Practice Warrior".
If you played competitive sports, you know who I am talking about, that guy who is Mr. All World during practice, coaches fall in love with him, play him on game days, but never really equates their Practice success to actual on the field success.
December 17th, 2019 at 6:16 PM ^
Yup. The Joe Boldens of the world.
December 17th, 2019 at 8:34 PM ^
You know you’re being trolled because burrow and fields never overlapped, as this guy is trying to imply
December 29th, 2019 at 6:22 PM ^
Yeah, tell that to Joe Burrow.....or do you think he wasn't deserving of a shot at being the starter at OSU?
Or what about Kurt Warner....Steve Young....I could go on and on about back ups that had the chops but had to wait. I think DCaff will surprise a lot of people next year.
December 17th, 2019 at 5:40 PM ^
When you say “how did that turn out for you”, you meant “how did it turn out for us?” Correct??
December 17th, 2019 at 7:48 PM ^
OMG you mean sometimes people are wrong? None of us had any fucking clue that was even possible.
Oh wait, the reason you say take the shot is because we don't know what the outcome will be. That said the way Speight was playing that year Okorn did not make things any worse, if anything he saved us from a loss in the Purdue game.
December 18th, 2019 at 5:17 PM ^
Yes, O'Korn played well in that Purdue game. However, he was much, much, much worse in the other games.
December 18th, 2019 at 1:07 PM ^
While I agree with you that players EARN a spot and aren't promised or owed anything, I've never interpreted the phrase "give (insert athlete) a shot" as a call for "everybody gets a shot." I've always interpreted it as "the starting QB is underperforming... if the backup QB is really as close to him as we've been told, it's time he was given an opportunity." That being said, I'm more inclined to think that the coaches know who deserves playing time and anything said to the general public is said to motivate players and might not be indicative of the actual results of the competition for playing time.
December 17th, 2019 at 5:25 PM ^
Let's start one of two guys that have 0 career starts and have shown nothing that would lead someone to believe that they're better than the fifth year starter and team MVP. What the fuck is wrong with people?
The Brandon Peters, John Okorn, bench Stafford crowd is alive and well. To some fans, the backup qb will always be the most loved player on the team.
December 17th, 2019 at 3:44 PM ^
Any first year QB makes mistakes, it's fact shea made the same ones over and over again. Good luck to him with the NFL.
December 17th, 2019 at 4:46 PM ^
Shea in the NFL . Do you think he will play meaningful snaps ?
December 17th, 2019 at 4:16 PM ^
Agree, except that the guy not starting will probably not be on the roster. Which means that a large contingent of fans will be positive that he was always the better player.
Shea wasn’t perfect by any stretch. But I find the proposition that Harbaugh has secretly developed a killer QB and simply refuses to play him in deference to an inferior player to be... highly improbable.
December 17th, 2019 at 4:35 PM ^
Eh. Reports out of camp had Patterson and McCaffrey evenly matched, though, yeah, reports out of camp... Still, McCaffrey and (especially) Milton have arm talent Patterson simply does not possess. Neither has shown the accuracy Patterson displayed after getting over that injury, or the same ability to make plays outside of the pocket. But both have higher ceilings that could be reached with a pretty reasonable amount of development.
December 17th, 2019 at 4:41 PM ^
Milton is the #3 and it wasn't even close this year. Big arm. But everything I've seen, heard and read says he's still 2 years away. Will he wait it out? Probably not.
McCaffrey gets the job and Milton goes to play for Harbaugh's buddy in Milton's home state of Florida and in 2 years he's the best Group of 5 QB in the country and people are comparing him to Josh Allen.
...hey, it could happen...
P.S. Taggart/FAU
December 17th, 2019 at 5:10 PM ^
Milton is an enigma. And here is the thing in overly complicated and structured offenses. Practice doesn't often equate to game performance. I do wonder if Milton isn't the best option, because he seems a cut above physically...look at Lamar Jackson here. Was ok in college. If in our offense? Maybe average and would look like Milton so far. You never know. I want Milton to play next year along with Mccaffrey and will be very bummed if he transfers.
December 17th, 2019 at 5:17 PM ^
lol--Lamar Jackson was ok in college? He won the Heisman, the Maxwell and the Walter Camp awards, was A.P. player of the year. We're running a spread. It's not rocket science. He would've murdered defenses in our offense too. And Milton is still a redshirt freshman, I believe. He's got some development ahead of him still. I do believe that the loser of the Milton/McCaffrey battle will probably be a grad transfer.
December 17th, 2019 at 8:26 PM ^
I totally agree with Alumnus above, yea, I mean he won a bunch of OK awards, but like nothing special. In many ways he reminds me of Bo Jackson or Barry Sanders (to use a couple of RB analogies). I mean, there's only so much those guys can do with such limited athletic ability.
December 17th, 2019 at 5:48 PM ^
I would love to see Milton emerge as our dual-threat savior but. . . I think we get that being able to chuck a ball a country mile is different from "arm talent," which Shea in fact had a lot of.
December 17th, 2019 at 8:34 PM ^
There is nothing to suggest that McCaffrey's arm talent is above Shea's. It's actually the other way around.
December 17th, 2019 at 4:47 PM ^
I, for one, love your Freddie Mercury-esque "gingering" with the Village People avatar, WD....
December 17th, 2019 at 7:40 PM ^
I don’t even know what this means and yet I have to laugh.
December 17th, 2019 at 4:53 PM ^
WD you will be one of the 1st.
December 17th, 2019 at 5:54 PM ^
God almighty. Can already hear it!
Good call, WD...
December 17th, 2019 at 6:54 PM ^
Joe Burrow is a first time starter too. Can't wait!
December 17th, 2019 at 8:52 PM ^
Joe Burrow just finished his 2nd full season starting for LSU.
As an aside:
The sheer amount of flat out wrong takes in this thread are staggering.
December 17th, 2019 at 8:32 PM ^
Looking forward to you pretending to have supported McCaffrey all along when he lights it up next year.
December 17th, 2019 at 10:31 PM ^
I was calling for a switch, and as I said at the time, not because I thought either was better than Shea, but rather that the season was lost and I thought it was time to give meaningful snaps and develop our QB for next year. My opinion later changed after seeing Shea fight through cheap shots and eye pokes. He deserved to finish the year, but I reserve the right to complain if we lose at Washington next year due to inexperienced QB play. Just kidding, I will complain they started the wrong guy at QB.
December 17th, 2019 at 3:02 PM ^
The only reason why i would want him back is for depth. Because i really want to see D-Caff at QB next year. But id rather see Patterson at #2 than Milton.
December 17th, 2019 at 3:02 PM ^
and he's going to lobby for a 6th year to come back and be a backup? seems rather unlikely
December 17th, 2019 at 3:15 PM ^
Shit like that only happens at Iowa and Purdue...
December 17th, 2019 at 5:06 PM ^
Not a 6th yr. He did not redshirt at Mississippi
December 17th, 2019 at 3:08 PM ^
D-Caff needs to learn to protect his body. Diving head first into a B1G defender has not been a good strategy to date.
December 17th, 2019 at 3:12 PM ^
Shea would've been the starter next year if he returned. The only reason to be happy is McCaffrey probably transfers if he does. So we'd be trading 1 year of Shea for 2 of McCaffrey.
