Hypothetical: Where would UM go if/when it leaves the B1G?

Submitted by SFBayAreaBlue on November 9th, 2023 at 2:38 PM

Since it's a slow news day, and we're all just waiting around, I thought it might be fun to speculate on consequences if the naive dimwit commish doesn't wise up.

I seriously doubt UM would leave the bigten before the end of the current TV contracts, but what do you guys think might happen then?  Or would some circumstances lead to changes before that?

Personally, I'd like to see a super conference of the best academic schools.

UM, Stanford, Cal, USC, UCLA, UNC, Florida, Notre Dame, Georgia Tech, maybe a Purdue and Northwestern so that everyone else can get some free wins.  Maybe let OSU and Penn State come along if they beg first.  You get the idea.

ACC or Independent, there is no legitimate other option.  I do agree that even these are far fetched, because we should be able to eject the current conference leadership and rebuild enough bridges outside of Ohio to keep Michigan both happy and safe in the Big Ten.

Sam Webb talked about this on his show yesterday with Steve Clarke. Easiest steps are:

  1. Do a Notre Dame-style deal with the ACC (because you need an easy scheduling partner) with an independent TV contract with either FOX or NBC or CBS
  2. Once you've got that set up, work with ND, best schools in ACC, PAC-12 refugees, et al to create new 10-team conference.

I think this is the right approach, though I would try to not do the ACC deal. Michigan could pretty easily build a schedule of 4 buy games and 8 home and homes with decent teams which would always give them 8 home games a year. Michigan is already in pretty deep with Fox and doing something that keeps games on Fox would make it more likely they could pull this kind of thing off. Which is why I would propose the following.

  • Independent in football with a standalone deal with Fox.
  • Join the Big East for all sports they sponsor (BE has a basketball deal with Fox)
  • Wait until the landscape changes again to find the right football landing spot. OSU would probably go to the SEC in 2030 when the current TV deals are up and that would open the floodgates to finding / building a 10 team conference without any dead weight.

actually don't hate this.  schedule would be tricky but I think doable.  try to get back to a home and home with ND, schedule Oregon State and Washington State for home and home games.  but then your going to need to find atleast 3-4 more Power 5 schools to play yearly, then fill the schedule out with fluff MAC/Sunbelt teams

Agreed, with any move the $$$ has to make sense.

If we were in cahoots with ND we could likely make that work if ND went full ACC in football...which did happen in 2020. Like you said, it all comes down to TV networks and financial distribution.

Personally (take out the money) I would jump at the chance to get out this effing conference. It's not the same when I grew up and was proud to be the class of the B1G. These last two weeks confirmed I know longer care about it.

We’re not going anywhere! We’re going to dominate this conference for years to come and the other teams will whine & bitch to no avail. Spartan & Buckeye tears taste like sugar.

I think Michigan leaving is pretty unlikely.   But if considering, would call Notre Dame and look to fully join the ACC together in order to work a better TV deal.    The ACC would certainly jump at the lifeline and likely give revenue premiums to both.   Academically with Cal and Stanford joining would have no peer except the Ivy League and probably best overall athletically.

Hockey would need some thinking though.

There are 36 AAU schools who are also in P5 conferences.  I say we create a new conference of four nine-team divisions...

...then kick out OSU/MSU and promote Tulane and Rice in their place

Thirded for joining Pac 2.

Not serious, of course, but honestly, everything's on the table.  It's not like there's any tradition to be preserved here, and USC and UCLA haven't yet played their first games as B1G football programs.

I think Brian touched on the most likely senario on the podcast.  A Super League.  I imagine UM nor any of the big profitable teams would leave in the near future.  But, espcially when revanue sharing becomes a thing, UM, OSU, Texas, Bama, USC, et al are all going to look at the Northwesterns and IUs and MSUs and Vandy's and say 'why are you getting as much money as me'.  Thus will be the talk for the super league off all the big time football programs.

Normally I would think UM would say no thanks we want the tradition of the Big Ten.  But if the Big Ten wants to fuck UM, I could see UM leading the formation of such a league down the road.

We are not leaving the big ten. It would wreck so much of what makes this sport fun for us (rivalries, traditional matchups, road games we can travel to) and also give in to the SEC we've been trying to keep from dominating the sport for years. No reason to throw out everything over one bout of idiocy. We fight this hard and move on

I agree overall that staying is preferable, but a couple of thoughts.  First, the traditional rivalries and local road games are going to be significantly eroded by the addition of the West Coast teams.  Second, "one bout of idiocy" may be symptomatic of a larger rot where the bulk of the other schools are willing to be OSU's puppet.  Both of those should give us some pause in the value of trying to fix what may already be an irrepairably broken relationship.

I'm not going to shout from the rooftops that we have to leave immediately.  But I don't think it would be the worst thing for the Regents and Santa Ono to give it some serious consideration.

You are thinking of this like a fan and while that is admirable, none of the decision makers A) care about rivalries, traditional matchup, and lol about road games, or B) fans. I'm not sure the decision makers give two shits if fans are even in the stadium at this point. They care about one thing, TV dollars. Is it short sighted? Probably, but the last 10 years or so have been proof that the above A and B are 100% correct.

I don't think UM is leaving the B10 either, but those things you cited are not the reasons. I do think they should at least be considering an escape plan if the current behavior continues. You just can't have all other teams in the conference against you at all times. It just won't work as 11 against 1 or whatever.

Eh, CFB is inevitably headed toward superconferences anyway. Had the Stalions thing never happened, this would still be the case. This season, while enjoyable due to dominance, has also featured a slog of mediocre opponents. I'd be fine never playing Minnesota, Purdue, Illinois, and Indiana. Those games are pointless and dull. Forward into the future!

Been a cfb and Michigan fan for a long time. Back ten years ago I’d have agreed with the tradition and rivalry angles. Maybe even just two or three years ago. Not anymore. I’ve kind of had enough of the B1G. There is no tradition anymore. Especially not with OSU. Sure they play a game against UM every year, but there is nothing traditional about it. OSU became the northernmost football factory masquerading as a college team, like a few SEC schools you could mention. To them it’s not about the competition, it’s not about respect, it’s not about anything but winning, and winning in whatever manner is possible. They don’t care about sportsmanship, integrity, and honor, unless it’s to call someone else out for not having any. To h*** with OSU. Let them go to the SEC where they’ve Belonged the past decade or more.

You want tradition? You want rivalries? Forge new ones then.

ACC

For selfish reasons I would love to have a Michigan/Red Sox or Dolphins playing the Patriots weekend or a Michigan/ Red Wings playing the Bruins weekend

Would also love a Michigan/ Dolphins weekend down in Miami (YTM)

I think the best/most likely case is that Michigan will stay in the big10, but command a much bigger share of the conference revenue.  We've been nice and cool for years sharing revenue with the likes of Rutgers, NW etc.  No more Mr. Nice Guy!

Florida? They're on the list of best academic schools? I put them on the list to send my SAT scores and I got an acceptance letter. I didn't even apply. I don't feel like the best academic schools ever used that approach.

I actually had to apply to Michigan, Purdue, Georgia Tech, Auburn, etc. to get accepted.

ACC is tied to ESPN. Screw that. Michigan should do its own conference. Michigan, OSU, Louisville, Florida State, Texas, Oklahoma, Washington, and USC.

Call it the Super 8 and a do a 20 year deal with Fox and NBC.

Maybe not even belong to the NCAA. Who's to say you'd have to?
