This will be the thread for hot takes about the offense and offensive playcalling.

Not that the announcers noticed or commented, but when the entire starting OL came back in late in the 3rd quarter presumably out of respect for Cade and the need to keep him in one piece, it gave me some shudders about the backups.

We would have gotten there if JJ and the starting two deep played just two more series.  Being a Michigan bettor is tough.  The line started at -46 I believe.  Then the Michigan bettors drove it up to -51/-52.  Such is life in the Michigan football betting world.  When hope and optimism run high, the spreads on Michigan games inflate beyond reasonable expectations.

The offense looked much more lively with JJ. Right now, he looks like the starter and Cade the backup.

Let’s address the elephant in the room…I have had several years of coaching experience and, in my opinion, would start JJ, with Cade in relief with the first team offense against UConn. Give them both an equal opportunity to run with the 1s. You need an experienced and capable back up, so you don’t want to alienate Cade. There is no way I would put anyone else at #2, but Cade, as the others have potential but really need a bit more seasoning. The last thing you want to do is go into a high-level game and put all of the pressure on an unproven QB.

The RB stable is solid with several of the newcomers providing valuable depth. The WRs need a bit better separation on traditional routes, but that will come with reps with JJ.

The OL is generally solid, but still have instances of mental lapses or technical breakdowns. They need to shore things up over the next several weeks before they get into Big Ten play.

Very happy with the offense from here on out.

Fine, not a ton positive can be learned in games like this. Nothing looked bad except some OL play. I just don't see an OL on par with last year.

QB battle is over. Done. To even debate it any more is actual insanity.

Play calling was fine, liked the subs and timing as well.

We still miss Haskins.  The Hawaii game masks that.  There is no equivalent replacement.  We will have to mitigate that against real competition.

Haskins is the reason that Cade looked fine last year but looks shaky this year. He took a lot of pressure off of Cade to have to carry the offense.  He kept a lot of third and longs from happening.

Agree almost entirely and absolutely the most blatant reason for any and all of the apparent drop-offs. I still don't think most of us realize how much we'll miss Haskins. We say it! We all say it and logically know it's true but we don't fully realise just how much we miss him...but we likely will sooner than later.

This is a team that will struggle to get a tough 2 against teams not named Hawaii, JJ or not. I'd be willing to bet on that as of today (it may improve). That was Haskins time for years and now we need JJ to make up for that deficit with a true read threat. That still doesn't make it ok. It's nice to have a guy that can almost always get 2 when the entire defense is playing the run in 4th & 1.

Wally Pipp was a pretty good first baseman. Sometimes you’ve just got to make way for the Lou Gehrig’s of the world. (Is that too over the top?)

Pretty clear. JJ did what I wanted and seized QB1. No question. The only question left is how he will do when faced with adversity/pressure, but there was no way to see that this week.

Thanks for 2021, Cade -- you will always be a legend in Michigan lore because of that. I hope you stay at Michigan.

  • JJ is qb1 for the forseeable future
  • Will Cade's pride allow him to be a championship-winning backup?
  • Some members of the OLine need to take a hard look in the mirror.

This is a good point. I think Donovan will be a good barometer of how well Mike Hart can coach up his RBs. Right now, Edwards doesn't seem to find / hit the correct gap decisively. Once he can turn on the jets, though, he's a burner. Hopefully, Coach Hart will help him get through the line more effectively.

Even if he ends up a shade below Blake running the ball, he brings so much to the passing game. JJ's long throw to him was a touch off, and he made a fantastic catch.

Cade unfortunately had D linemen in his face all night. Three things I saw from him that beyond anything JJ did warrant sitting Cade:

1. 3rd down throws that are check downs short of the sticks. He had time, decided to go short instead of waiting for other routes to open up downfield. Led to two punts.

2. The INT was on him, and him alone. He chose not to step up because he didn’t trust his OL to block for him. The space was there. No one in his face, and he throws it right to the DB.

3. Most important to me, showing me that he’s losing his edge as a leader: barking at the OL again and again. Yes, they made some mistakes. But a true leader takes responsibility when its on him. Even on the INT, he’s yelling. Not a good look for a captain.

It seemed to me like the team just was not motivated to ball out when Cade was in the game. I doubt they are actively attempting to sabotage him, but they played with more fire with JJ at the helm. The fact that JJ was clean all night, Cade comes in and eats a bunch of hurries, and then 3rd stringers come in and start marching down the field again says a lot to me.

If JJ isn’t the starter from here on out, I’m not sure what they are waiting for. Harbaugh has made this kind of change before in the NFL. He clearly doesn’t hold to old-school football unwritten rules about seniority and captains starting that he would have grown up with. I don’t buy that they’d wait for better competition… Cade looked not good against THIS competition. JJ balled out like he was supposed to, two weeks in a row now. It isn’t even close.

If Harbaugh was going to be so bold to let slip from the sub week 1 and 2 starters, he’s gotta stick to that plan given the result of it. He set up the competition, JJ won beyond any shadow of a doubt, and now it’s his turn to start full-time. Cade has done so much for Michigan, and I am glad that we have a championship level QB to turn to should things go awry with JJ. But the pecking order has to change now. Let the team move on from this and let the JJ era begin.

Harbaugh announced that JJ would be the starter next week in the post game interview.  Cade had D Lineman in his face because he's terrible at feeling pocket pressure and can't read the field.  JJ has pocket awareness and can scramble out of a collapsing line.  That's the difference.

“Cade had D Lineman in his face because he's terrible at feeling pocket pressure and can't read the field”

No he had D linemen in his face because the OLine completely blew their blocks. He didn’t have a chance on either of the 2 sacks (the first sacks Hawaii has had all year). OLine needs to keep up their focus.

Obviously JJ played way better tonight, but this is a terrible take.

"He can't feel pocket pressure" is so false. The guy has many faults but he's got incredible pocket presence and one series does not change that, the same way that any one series wouldn't change the fact that JJ is the better option. Like did you watch last season? Why do you think we had such an elite sack rate despite only above average pass pro?

If you want to see poor pocket presence, watch some Shea Patterson tape.

I was watching the game with my Dad (OSU fan). After JJ completed that throw to Edwards, I jumped up and said “this is awesome!” Both of us agreed JJ was out there making throws that we’ve hardly or never seen a UM QB make. I’ve been a fan since 1996 and this is the most excited I’ve ever been about the potential of the offense and the team in general.

Cade must feel a bit like the older brother in The Parable of the Prodigal Son, underappreciated even though he did everything he was supposed to and asked to do.

Of course JJ's actions don't have anything in common with the prodigal son's.

JJ is a lot of fun to watch, some of those throws would be money against any level of competition.

Not sure I can take a whole lot more from the game. Honestly kinda feel like it's a small victory for Hawaii to even be not at the absolute bottom after getting the details on their roster situation.

JJ is QB1 and it's not close.  I thought Cade had an unfortunate situation with poor OL blocking on a bunch of snaps but that may be the product of the opposing defense not respecting his passing game or ability to run.

The offense hummed under JJ.  Again, strength of competition caveats apply, but you can't ask for much more when JJ was in the game.  He made the most of his limited opportunity.  The offense set a Harbaugh at Michigan record for yards in a half(?).  Pinpoint lasers on a frozen rope.  One incompletion.  Doesn't get much better than that.

And Roman Wilson.  Dude....... If that guy isn't first team All B1G by year's end then this world is messed up beyond repair.  He looks laser focused.  His game is tight.

The idea that Cade was ahead of JJ coming out of camp is absolutely laughable. I’m glad we can finally move on from this stupid biblical decision HARBAUGH is about to make. JJ is light years ahead of Cade.

I truly believe that HARBAUGH refused to state the obvious to ensure Cade doesn’t leave during camp. Cade was given one half with starters to prove himself. How is he able to do that with his limitations. I feel bad for Cade and feel like HARBAUGH used him.

I didn't watch the game.  Was at dmb concert but was thinking about Cade's interview last week.  It almost seemed that he knew it wasn't really a competition anymore but JH didn't want to demote him especially as he was voted team captain.
