Has Big Ten Regular Season Champion Methodology been determined?

Submitted by HireWayne on February 21st, 2021 at 6:22 PM

Michigan is 11-1 with 5 games remaining.

Illini is 12-3 with 5 games remaining.

Will best winning percentage, most wins, or least losses determine who gets the crown?

They haven't officially announced it, but the CBS announcers did say it's probably how it would be decided.

I don't think they go out on a limb and say that unless the B10 told them and it's a way to break it to the rest of the conference (Illinois) who is going to be mad we got an "advantage" by playing less games.

Hold on. Winning percentage makes the most sense AND the Big Ten is using that method?

What about the Big Ten's mission statement, to seek the words possible outcome by causing the most confusion in the most places for the most people?

Popularity ain't my concern. I act on the assumption that people have reasons for posting what they do. Most of the time, down or up voted, I can figure out why.

For instance, I see that you seem to be concerned about popularity, so it makes sense that you'd down vote when you think I am too.

But when I don't know, I do that weird thing that some people do when they don't know: I ask. Especially when someone defends Big Ten decision making.

Here's an interesting scenario: what if Illinois wins out, and Michigan wins all their games except against Illinois. Michigan would barely have the better winning percentage (0.88 vs 0.85), but Michigan would have lost its only game to the 2nd place team and played 3 less games. I could see a lot of whining from Illinois fans if that happened.

I mean the thing is, if Michigan went 3-0 against NW, PSU and Indiana (at home), we'd win the Big Ten even if we lost to Illinois. It's more likely than not Michigan would've went 3-0 during that stretch, two of those teams are bottom 3 in the conference and IU is a mid-level team that would've been coming to Ann Arbor with us on a hot streak.

Also, will not be surprised if Illinois loses again even if they beat us. They have to visit the Buckeyes in Columbus (who they already lost to once), as well as the Badgers in Madison.

It's the B1G.  They're going to wait until the last weekend and announce whatever it takes to give the season title to 0$u.  Probably while M is up 30 on STAEE.

OSU can catch Illinois (especially because they have the potential to sweep the Illini for a H2H tiebreaker), but they very likely can't catch us.

Michigan would have to go 1-4 or 0-5 down the stretch for OSU to surpass us even if they win out. If we go 2-3, we'd be 13-4, which is a winning percentage of 0.76, higher than OSU's best case of 0.75 (15-5).

Same goes for Iowa, who also has 5 losses. Even if we lose to both Iowa and Illinois, we just need to win 2/3 against IU and MSU (x2) in order to clinch a 2 seed in the BTT.

All in all, unless we totally collapse, the worst Michigan can place in the Big Ten is #2; only Illinois can catch us.

If it's best winning % then Michigan's magic number is 4 (Mich. wins & Illinois loses).Example :Mich.wins 4 out of 5 Mich is Champ.because 15-2 win % is higher than 17-3.If Mich wins 3 out of 5 they need 1 Illinois loss because 14-3 is higher win % than 16-4.

Winning percentage.

Also, as this is the Big Ten and nothing is that easy, relative humidity on the final Thursday before the conference tournament as measured at O'Hare multiplied by the number of times the Red Sox blew a lead at a critical moment.

All I know is if Michigan takes care of business (not a given, but if they do), there’d better not be a single OSU player, coach or fan bitching about how unfair it is that Michigan wins the Big Ten when OSU will have played more games. It’s the same argument Indiana used against OSU and exact same situation, because IU lost the head to head but played more games and took care of business against everyone not named OSU. And lo and behold, OSU still won the division, the conference, and not a single person in OSU fandom complained.

If that’s OSU’s argument, in that situation, then I hope they’re ready to completely forfeit their football conference title and give it to Indiana.

Exactly, Illinois is the only team besides us with a chance in hell of finishing in 1st place.

I believe we go at least 4-1 or 5-0 to finish 15-2(20-2 overall )   or 16-1(21-1 overall ).before the B1G Tournament.

If this had been a normal season, our record could have been somewhere between 32-2 and 30-4 if we made the conference final before the NCAA tournament.

Winning percentage and least number of losses are effectively the same criteria. The only way it isn’t is if Michigan goes 11-6 and Illinois goes 13-7 then Illinois has more losses BUT a better percentage. And that would be an epic collapse for both teams at which point OSU, Purdue and Iowa are back in the conversation.

Least number of losses wins.

In case of an equal number of losses, Michigan loses all tie breakers (worse winning pct).

Honestly, if Michigan beats Illinois, it's all but over anyway.

Lots of outs if they lose to Illinois.
