Harbaugh Deal could be done by End Of Week Per Sam Webb

Submitted by Hail2UM83 on January 11th, 2023 at 8:36 AM

Just a bit of info from 247 and Sam Webb. If this is not allowed I apologize in advance.and please feel free to remove

I feel it necessary now to turn attention back to Harbaugh Webblog Part Three where I emphasized how that was a piece from the perspective of agents. It’s important to note the perspectives presented here in Part Four come from University and donor circles. They believe the agent views of Harbaugh being at the top of Denver’s list are off. They also believe that Harbaugh’s strong preference is to stay put in Ann Arbor. An obvious litmus test of their views will be if an in-person interview with Denver is scheduled. As of this evening, sources in University circles indicated no such request has been made yet. That has only added to the confidence that Harbaugh is nearing a deal with Michigan. How near, you ask? Those same sources expressed their belief that an agreement could be reached by the end of the week. If the process drags out longer than that and an in-person interview is scheduled, then the confidence that they expressed this evening will be diminished. Especially with the dead period set to end Thursday, and Harbaugh expected to be in Colorado sometime after that for a home visit with Aurora (Colo.) Regis Jesuit LB Hayden Moore.

That's wild if true - $15 Million/year is going to reset the coaching market considerably and I think puts him at 120% of Saban's salary. I think its more difficult to win at Michigan than Alabama, but still surprises me given Michigan's general reluctance to set the market in coach compensation. Hopefully this doesn't impact the assistant pool $.

I am grown up and sometimes I use codes. For example if I say to my wife "looks like the kids are going to be out of the house for a few hours," that's code for "we won't be interrupted if we get our freak on right now." If she responds, "Yeah I know. I'm going to run to Costco before they get back because I'm going to return blah blah blah blah" that's code for "I'm not interested."

1138 is obviously a reference to THX 1138, the experimental sci-fi film created by George Lucas before he made Star Wars.  Of course, Star Wars itself ALSO references THX 1138 by using that as a serial number for a particular stromtrooper during a scene set on the Death Star.

That all adds up to STONE COLD PROOF that the Death Star is officially operational.  It can mean nothing else.

Im kinda starting to understand the whole thing about why he never stays in one place for too long cuz he pisses everyone off. I just dont really care about him anymore. Go, stay, whatever dude. Hes killing the image of the place he says he loves. Actions speak louder than words

Life is comprised of tradeoffs. You get two wins against Ohio State and two Big Ten titles and a return to national relevancy. And you get the flirtations with the NFL and the general weirdness.

We previously had Brady Hoke and the less winning and some concerning issues. And RichRod, who definitely seemed to bring out things that killed the image of Michigan with the reported lack of support from within the Michigan "family" almost immediately.

Ohio State had Tressel and those problems, and Urban, a great coach with no character. Penn State had JoePa and we found out what was really going on there and now they have Frames and he's a psycho/weirdo who asks for coaches' wives' IG pages before hiring them.

Adults are complicated, and throwing in the towel on a relationship because it isn't perfect and elements of it piss you off is childish, in my opinion.

What recruit, player or coach have left the program because of what Harbaugh is doing right now.  If he signs a long term contract by the end of the week is he all of a sudden back in your good graces?  The whole idea that Harbaugh has held the program hostage and is "killing the image" is ridiculous at this point.  If he waits another month like he did last year then I think some damage could be done but if he signs a long-term deal then he has as much protection as any other college coach in America.  I believe the University of Michigan is just as much to blame as Harbaugh throughout the past two years.  Why do we always hear that Harbaugh is interviewing with X and Y team and a potential package is being put together instead of University of Michigan is working with Harbaugh and agent and they are confident a deal will be done soon.  This info from Sam is the first I have heard of Michigan actually doing anything.

To your point, the only thing he's "doing" to players (that leave) is starting someone ahead of them.  He's doing this because he thinks the starter gives us a better change to win.  Similarly, coaches are leaving for promotions.  I also agree with your sentiment about how the University is treating him, likely because up until recently he didn't win the B1G.  But when he did, his bonus money went to other coaches - who also took pay-cuts during the C19 season.  I think Michigan leadership took notice of this, and the Championships, and are actively working to keep him.  The NFL may influence what they have to pay to keep him.

I agree with this - I don't know the complexities of Ward's role and I am sure there are many so it is a little cheap to criticize without that info.  But - if it makes sense to get a new deal then get the new deal and be done with it.  If there IS an agent creating all this noise they're doing their job as messy as it makes life.  The only way to avoid it is to preempt it.  Which seems to be what happens with places like UGA and Kirby Smart or generally with Alabama and Nick Saban over the years - never seems to be in NFL discussions because the university doesn't let it get to that.

I’m no Warde apologist.  I don’t think he’s all that great and would dread him conducting a coaching search.  However, there is no solid evidence that this is Warde’s fault.  JH signed a new contract 1 year ago.  All of the things said and not said about this situation seem to indicate JH actively pursuing NFL openings.  It’s hard to get a new deal done if your coach is delaying the process to make sure exhausts his NFL options first.  If this was simply about more money, JH would’ve approached Warde when the Denver interest was first mentioned.  The longer this process takes, the less leverage JH has as it becomes clear he is not a top candidate for any NFL job.

To be fair, not all information is made public. Most of what we've been talking about here is speculation. Even Sam Webb is speculating to some extent. He may have sources but until something is made official, all we know is that Harbaugh has talked to a couple of NFL teams. We don't even know in what context that was.

100%...   all the "Warde is doing nothing"......  "JH is holding the program hostage"......

is speculative bullshit.   There's no way to know whether or not they are in close communication or whether or not JH and Warde have discussed exactly what each is looking for and what it takes to get that done.

In fact.... the only first hand information that's been released was JH's statement that confirmed, in plain language that JH has been in conversations with Santa and Warde, they are supportive of him and the program, he expects to be coaching Michigan in 2023, closed with Those who stay....

As is common place, the fan base is pretty quick to fly off the handle and run rampant with speculation fueled by years of bpone and the general overture 'we can't have anything nice around here'.

Everyone needs options, even if they love what they do.  Being employed is a two-way street, one year you're the GOAT and the next year you could be fired.  Life is fickle like that.  I don't blame Harbaugh for testing the waters of his other interest.

Hell, I have a job I love and have told countless people that, including my employer.  But I still interviewed and was offered a job at a different employer just a few months ago.  I didn't take it but ended up getting a raise and a nice retention bonus from my current employer to stay.  My numbers are in a different universe than Harbaugh's but the spirit of what happened was very similar.

I understand what Harbaugh is doing and respect his freedom of choice and to live his life the way he sees fit.

I have one indirect source that used to be connected to legal that still is indirectly connected. So, I'd be third person.  But, this is exactly what was told to me was the reality.  The details were years and amounts.  Now, this same person was not aware of the NCAA stuff until it came out in the press.  Not an area the person would engage in but still.

I do believe there is a very viable contract on the table, details are being worked through and it is very likely soon (I was initially told by end of last week so take that for what it is).

Harbaugh is a wild hair.  Maybe the NCAA response by the AD won't meet his expectations and he walks.  Maybe they are getting it stuck to him even with the AD's best efforts and he walks. Maybe an NFL team really does offer 18-20 million (a number I do think will be needed) and major control over player selection and he walks.  All possible.  Those who say you are saying nothing are potentially right.

The vibe in legal isn't that of worry, it all, from the communication I've received, is its still more likely he remains a Wolverine.  It would not be a shock to anyone if this drags on for two or three weeks though so this won't be the last post on the topic.

Edit:  Don’t bother   I didn’t see the reply below before I wrote this   Continue to next comment

This exactly.  My understanding from people close to the situation is that warde said after the osu game harbaugh would get an offer that would make him highest paid coach in big ten.  Then he came in w one that had him 4th.  Harbaugh was unhappy and hired an agent to show his value.  Additionally, warde did nothing on the ncaa report and was laying down.  Harbaugh went to Ono directly to get support in fighting it.  He got that and ono is now involved.  They were hoping to close it Monday but that didn’t happen.  But I’ve been told they feel it’s better than 90% that harbaugh stays.

that’s what I’ve heard.  Seems to match up w everything else reported.

Heres whats being said - some could be BS, some could be true, all of this is pulled from multiple "insider" posts on different forums.

After the Ohio Game an offer making Jim the highest paid coach, with the highest paid assistant salary was offered. In addition huge NIL support, basically a win win situation for all.

Then the allegation talk came and Warde balked on Jim. The offer was less then Big 10 peers, and it did not increase the assistant pool. Big Buyout...basically a weak ass move by Warde. This pissed Jim off and now we start hearing about his NFL interest. Mind you Warde is the guy who cut Jims salary already, Warde is the guy who has been holding back NIL, Warde and Jim seem to have a tough relationship.

Now

Santa comes to the rescue, gives Jim his personal support against the NCAA (word is they are consulting with Tom Mars). The contract offers come back making Jim the highest paid HC in the Big 10, assistant coaches are going to be the highest paid, top NIL support, larger buyout. I believe Santa is saying Jim has the Universities FULL support. What happens from here? Nobody knows....Warde is still the AD. I suspect Jim working directly with Santa would be an issue?

Again, I am not an insider. Some of this might be BS - but all of this is gathered from different forums. Most of the posters are trusted.

I'm no expert, but have discerned the same from the various outlets and seemingly trustworthy posters. I think the only negative thing in all this is possibly Warde's perspective toward his job security. If all this is true, kudos to Santa for not being afraid to step on toes and do what must be done to stay relevant.

It sounds plausible, except for the part about the notice of allegations just arriving out of the blue.  That doesn't happen - the NCAA was in Ann Arbor doing an investigation for some reason, so there's no way any of this came out of thin air.  They all knew some of it was coming.  What I can believe, though, is that Harbaugh wanted more support from Warde regarding them and didn't get it.  I can believe that Santa came to the rescue, but I doubt the contract offer (if actually made) was pulled.

Personally, I believe that Warde did not offer the full-hearted support against the NCAA that Jim wanted.  With JH's personality, I can fully believe that would turn him off.  Warde hasn't supported much of anything Harbaugh has done, especially where public perception isn't always favorable.

Youre correct. UM knew about the allegations, knew the NCAA was investigating, and knew the findings were coming. Although all of these items werent "new" its being said Warde used them to lowball Jim. Jim lost his faith in Warde, and believed the University didnt support him as the HC.
