Happy 15 year anniversary Mgoblog users and blog.
Around this time 15 years ago Mgoblog switched from the .org site to the .com. Happy anniversary to all you lurkers and posters of such an awesome site. Thank you to Brian, Seth and the others for all the years of hard work.
Agreed--thank you for remaining the best college sports blog out there even after 15 years. I have a hard time staying focused on one thing for 15 minutes, so kudos all around to the people who work on the site.
I have been here for about 15 years. But I knew Brian as an undergrad so I read this site when it was a simple blogspot website and was just a hobby for Brian. Ah, the Haloscan days!
Those were the days. When we thought The Year of Infinite Pain was going 7-5.
Haloscan...only the OGs would get an Al Groh Mafia reference.
Ha! Al Groh was signed, sealed and delivered as our next coach accordingly to the Haloscan peeps. No moderators, no police, just a wild Wild West of speculation and rumors. It had a certain charm that I sometimes miss.
Thanks for the hard work and creating a fun community to connect with. It's a great accomplishment.
Maiz you are my MgBlog Idol that I can never live up to. Like Jesus but you are a terrible person.
Like Jesus... but nastier. - Fred Jackson
Congrats mgoblog! Love the site.
Although it's funny that we're 15 years in and 99% of us still have no idea how to post a picture here.
Been here almost every day since, but I'm pretty sure today was the first day I ever posted a pic. It's actually pretty easy!
... posting pictures not that hard ; )
Super easy to do it on a computer, but not so much on the mobile app. I'm here at Disney with my kid trying to create this post on my phone.
Is MGoBlog 15 years old:
http://mgoblog.blogspot.com/?m=1
or is it actually 18 years 7 months old:
https://mgoblog.com/content/about-mgoblog
AT 12:30 AM on December 4th, 2004, MGoBlog was born thusly:
Blog.Init()
GoBlog()
{
Hello World
}
A computer dork from the very first. A few weeks later, Michigan lost the a heartbreaking Rose Bowl, baptizing the blog in disappointment.Â
So what is this place? It's a somewhat comprehensive Michigan sports blog that promises to cover football, hockey, basketball, baseball, and all other Michigan sports in various levels of detail. These levels are:
- football: exhaustive, extreme, and debilitating
- hockey: considerable
- basketball: considerable
- baseball: minimal, edging towards moderate when they're good
- all others: mentions whenever they threaten to win a national title
Your host is a 30-ish Michigan true believer whose grandfather ushered at Ferry Field and bought season tickets in the 1950s, when not even the player's parents bothered to show up except for Ohio State. Those tickets have stayed in the family since and, yes, they are frickin' sweet...
THE BARWIS EFFECT!
My word we have been through quite a few crazy subjects.
I used to follow it when it was on an Angelfire.org site. 15 years ago this week is when you could create an account with the .com
Maybe somebody should organize an MGoCamping trip to celebrate this?
I’m not going unless you promise not to throw chimp poop around.
Bringing a big bag of baboon poop.
Pfff, like that’s an upgrade? At least you didn’t say you were bringing a bag of koala guts.
Now. This topic brings back memories. Ha!
Brian founded this site just days after we won the 2004 Big Ten title. And then…
For awhile it seemed like there was a legit MGoCurse. Did anyone do any exorcism in the 2021 offseason?
(We still have the issue of football and basketball not being good at the same time.)
BUY HAIL TO THE VICTORS YOU CHEAPSKATES
Here's how (15 years ago, anyway) to order:
http://mgoblog.blogspot.com/2008/06/hail-to-victors-2008.html
15 years since the first release and richrod season? It doesn't seem that long ago, yet the gray hairs caused from all he pain of the intervening years tells a different story.
The single best site on the internet! Many thanks to everyone that has contributed to building this site.
You're welcome.
Fact: The internet was invented for MGoBlog.
Best site ever. Thanks Brian, Seth, et al.
Mgoblog just got a shout out from Tom Freakin Brady too
A banner day, to be sure.
HALOSCAN FOREVA
Is this (on blogspot.com) what's referred to as "Haloscan" or was it a previous version of MGoBlog?
Haloscan was the completely unmoderated comments section that served as the equivalent of the board.
There was no board; there were no diaries. There were people just indiscriminately having one long, scrolling, non-threaded conversation on every post.
New post? Now we move the discussion over to the comments section of that one. It was the wild west and glorious. And you could change your name at any time which introduced some very interesting problems at times.
Haloscan, where you could see the Wolverine Liberation Army in their natural habitat.
...and that would be up their own buttholes.
you know that Dex is still lurking in the shadows ready to pounce with a new crew of troops...
for those of you that have no idea who the WLA and or Dex is...
I was waiting for a WLA reference!
either Dex became a Canadian mortgage broker or a Canadian mortgage broker bought the URL and left it but is giving mortgage advice under Wolverine Liberation Army...
Well done! I started reading around Feb of 2008. Took another 8 mths to create an account as I didn't even realize there was a message board for several months. Crazy that it's still going and remains just as good now as an independent site among all the other leviathans out there in the sports blog world. I'm sure Brian received many offers from larger entities over the years and apparently turned them all down - which is great because I know for certain a large corporation would've run it into the ground. Thanks for all your hard work, passion, and dedication in covering our beloved UM sports.
I started lurking about the time you became a member, then created an account in 2009 when I realized Brian wasn't using the site to transmit malware, drain my bank accounts, or access my webcams.
Amazing this place survived through the worst phase of Michigan football in the modern era. The content produced by the MGoBlog team, the diarists, and the rest of us was the reason to keep coming back -- even through the shitty years. I have learned about medical breakthroughs, physics, music, astronomy, history, other cultures, and other troves of useful and useless information from this blog. My understanding of football has improved because of Brian, Seth, Space Coyote, Magnus, Read Your Guard, and a bunch of others. Who would've thunk it?
I started lurking since high school during 2014 during the Harbaugh “ITS HAPPENING” and have been hooked since. Only recently actually started logging on and I have to say the community and effort by MGBLPV members is amazing. Thanks Brian, Seth, and others who’ve contributed to keep this place running and awesome!
To this day I vividly remember being 22 and dancing to Peanut Butter Jelly Time in my parents' living room.
13 1/2 years for me!
My first thought was ‘really, just 15 years?’ My second thought was ‘is this OT?’
so much BPONE, so many Muppets! Here is to more of the latter 🍻
Fun fact: Meta is objectively the most difficult concept for the human mind to comprehend.
Yes this blog actually got started in 2004 and switched to .com in 08 but I think I speak for everyone here when I say it was 12 years and nine months ago that this place REALLY took off as a site.
Yes, 12 years and nine months ago everything changed and changed for the better in such a massively positive and universally well recieved way it’s almost like it was reborn.
