Guys who can come back for a 5th year in 2020
With the roster being listed by academic year instead of eligibility--a change Harbaugh made in 2016--there is some confusion on who is actually what. I remember when Michigan used to list redshirts. Made things a lot easier.
Anyways, I combed through the entire roster and looked through statistics. Here are all the scholarship guys who can return in 2020 for a 5th year. All of them are actually redshirt JRs besides Shea who can apply for a redshirt since he only played 3 games in 2016 at Ole Miss.
- Carlo Kemp- Only played in 2 games in 2016
- Shea Patterson- Only played in 3 games in 2016 at Ole Miss
- Quinn Nordin- Did not play in a game in 2016
- Devin Gil- DNP in 2016
- Tru Wilson- Only played in 1 game in 2016
- Michael Dwumfour- Only played in 1 game in 2016
- Stephen Spanellis- DNP in 2016
- Nick Eubanks- Only played in 1 game in 2016
- Sean McKeon- Only played in 4 games in 2016
Josh Uche was on this list until he declared for the Draft recently. Can and will return are two different things.

Take Patterson off the list.
December 10th, 2019 at 5:15 PM ^
There’s a bunch of buzz for Patterson 5th year. Regardless of what you think, he’s going to go for it.
December 10th, 2019 at 5:46 PM ^
Where is this buzz? I’ve seen two posts on here, and that’s it.
December 10th, 2019 at 5:48 PM ^
He’s not coming back... in my opinion.
December 10th, 2019 at 6:07 PM ^
Well you would know.
December 11th, 2019 at 8:40 AM ^
Tell us more about your opinion.
December 10th, 2019 at 6:17 PM ^
The new redshirt rule doesn't grandfather in, so he would need to apply for a medical. I can't imagine that going through since he wasn't actually injured in 2016.
December 10th, 2019 at 6:28 PM ^
I've seen these rumors, but I don't see how he gets an answer in time. He has already accepted an invite to the Shrine Bowl (1/18/20) per Twitter. Obviously not binding, but it would mean he would need an answer in the next 4 weeks. If anyone was curious, other Michigan players on the Shrine Bowl twitter accepting invites: Michael Onwenu, Khaleke Hudson, Lavert Hill, Michael Danna, Sean McKeon, and Jordan Glasgow. Michigan players listed on the Senior Bowl "Accepted Invites" webpage: Joshua Uche, Josh Metellus, Sean McKeon, Ben Bredeson.
?....YALL KNOW WHAT TIME IT IS ⏰

Congrats QB Shea Patterson (@SheaPatterson_1 ) from @UMichFootball on accepting his invite to the 2020 @Shrine_Bowl ! #ShrineBowl | #GoBlue pic.twitter.com/VsokFbRITZ

Its on Twitter his family said he’s moving on.
December 15th, 2019 at 7:10 AM ^
Buzz? I hope it's a whimper. Please god no. I've seen enough.
December 10th, 2019 at 7:32 PM ^
I believe you can take Tru off of the list also. He wasn't on scholarship his 1st 2 years and I doubt he will get one for a 5th year. I would argue that any player accepting an offer to play in a post season all star game should be taken off the list also, McKeon is done.
December 10th, 2019 at 5:18 PM ^
I'd love to have Dwumfour back with the depth situation at DT. It seems we haven't taken enough advantage of Eubanks skills catching the ball. It would be nice to have at least one of the two TE's back next year though.
Nordin, not so much. Too many missed kicks this year. That missed PAT in the OSU game was like a huge deflating fart-like sound in the stadium.
December 10th, 2019 at 5:23 PM ^
Both Kemp and Dwumfour back would help.
December 10th, 2019 at 5:28 PM ^
I get the system the were running with Moody and Nordin, but holy crap why is he ever kicking PATs?! Moody doesn't miss those. Nordin has missed multiple. Equitable opportunities to kick FGs? Fine. PATs? No reason to do it that way.
December 10th, 2019 at 5:46 PM ^
That's a $10 million question. Ask the coach.
December 10th, 2019 at 6:03 PM ^
This is like quarterbacks. If you have two starters you don't have any. Pick a kicker and roll with him.
December 10th, 2019 at 7:28 PM ^
Weren’t they both injured at different points this season?
December 10th, 2019 at 7:53 PM ^
It's the goddamn communists in Ann Arbor trying to level the playing field.
December 10th, 2019 at 8:12 PM ^
Was on that on Nordin or that stupid lineup stunt, which led them to rushing the snap. I was his biggest critic when he has that wild thing haircut and head larger than life, but he settled down and he hit a key field goal.
December 10th, 2019 at 6:26 PM ^
I don't blame Nordin for that missed kick. I blame whoever thought they should try that stupid formation where only the center, the holder and Nordin are aligned with the ball while the remaining team was fiddling around to the left. They all rushed back to get into normal position and ended up snapping the ball in a rush. They didn't screw around with that the rest of the game.
December 10th, 2019 at 7:53 PM ^
Ironically, Nordin farted when he missed the kick.
December 10th, 2019 at 5:21 PM ^
I thought McKeon already declared for the Senior Bowl with Uche.
December 10th, 2019 at 6:36 PM ^
He's accepted invites to both the Shrine Bowl and the Senior Bowl. I think he is gone.
December 10th, 2019 at 5:21 PM ^
This doesn’t account for if the 4 game any portion of the season rule is retroactive, right? Which we still aren’t clear on if it is or not I thought.
Who would fall off the list if the rule isn’t retro?
December 10th, 2019 at 5:25 PM ^
Technically all of them that played would, using the old rule you would have to get a medical redshirt, for which you could have only played in three games during the first half of the season.
It didn’t ever seem to be that hard to get, at MSU you could usually get two
December 10th, 2019 at 6:07 PM ^
The 4 game rule is not retroactive.
Could that change be made by the NCAA? Possibly, but if they were inclined to, they would have done it at the same time they made the new rule. They didn't make it retroactive for the players who could have played their 5th year this season.
Wilson played in the 2nd half of every season. He can't qualify for a medical. For the others who played, it depends on whether they suffered a season ending injury. That's a term used leniently for a 5th year, somewhat inconsistently for a 6th. Uche is the one that I know was publicized. Edit - Eubanks is another with a known injury.
December 10th, 2019 at 5:23 PM ^
Patterson would be better off going somewhere else ... Harbaugh needs to push him on out
December 10th, 2019 at 5:30 PM ^
Out of curiosity, where do you think that would be?
I guess I don't understand some of the vitriol. I get some of it, and even agree with some of the criticisms, but this level just stymies me.
December 10th, 2019 at 5:48 PM ^
Feed not the trolls.
December 10th, 2019 at 6:08 PM ^
XFL, CFL anywhere but Michigan
December 10th, 2019 at 8:17 PM ^
Admit it, you just want him on LA’s XFL team.
December 10th, 2019 at 7:12 PM ^
What better QB is readily available to us to replace him with, may I ask? The guys who couldn't beat him out or the guys who don't go to school here?
December 10th, 2019 at 10:42 PM ^
We saw Patterson’s ceiling, it’s the best for everyone if he moves on. The QB’s to replace him are on the roster and half the fan base was screaming for them to start in place of Patterson until late late in the season. He had 3.5 good games, have some faith in those who were behind him after another spring and fall of coaching. Justin Fields couldn’t beat out Jake Fromm, the guys behind the starter can be “The Guy”. DMc is going to be the guy and he is going to be fine. Imo
December 10th, 2019 at 7:51 PM ^
Patterson may not have been a Heisman QB, but he has elevated the play and the expectations of the position group in his time here. I'm anxious to see how McCaffrey and Milton do next year, but I'm grateful for what Shea has done for us.
MSU and OSU trolls talk crap about Patterson. I have no designs to be anything like them.
December 10th, 2019 at 8:03 PM ^
Rudock elevated my expectations for the position to 3,000 yards passing each season. We certainly had the WRs to do it this year.
There's room to criticize Patterson for the season but I wish the guys doing so would address the blame that should be attributed to Gattis and Harbaugh. I remember Brian lamenting that Collins had just one more target than Charbonnet - "and that's with DPJ out with injury." That was about 5 games into the season.
December 15th, 2019 at 7:09 AM ^
Exactly. Rudock could actually hit deep balls in stride. In my opinion he's been Harbaugh's best QB and that was one season. That's pretty sad, but I think with the way he's recruited the position we'll finally be in good shape. Patterson was just average, like Wilton Speight but with scrambling ability. Always good for a turnover even in his "best games". For the person that basically said how good can Mccaffrey/Milton be if they couldn't beat out Shea...Harbaugh loved Patterson. He valued his experience over the unknowns but with more upside, even though as a senior Shea had the most brutal stretch of football I've ever seen out of a senior starting QB at Michigan. I think the fact that Harbaugh planned to use Mccaffrey at times this season proved that he's too talented to sit another year on the bench. Obviously the concussion changed that but I also thought it was poorly planned out, as they didn't give Dylan much chance to throw. He needs to learn to slide or get out of bounds when he runs that's for sure.
December 11th, 2019 at 2:32 PM ^
I worry that if Shea returns we might see DMac or Milton (or both!) transfer, which would be a disaster. I think it's Dylan McCaffrey's time. He's got two years and Milton will be pushing him.
December 10th, 2019 at 5:24 PM ^
Shea? More like ShYAY!
December 10th, 2019 at 5:24 PM ^
I thought I saw McKeon accepted a senior bowl invite.
December 10th, 2019 at 5:24 PM ^
If Patterson returns I bet McCaffrey transfers, crazy to think that Harbaugh has yet to use a QB he recruited in his time her.
December 10th, 2019 at 5:47 PM ^
He recruited every QB to play here other than Speight and Morris.
December 10th, 2019 at 10:01 PM ^
All his starters were transfers or Hokes. Peters only started out of necessity.
December 10th, 2019 at 7:58 PM ^
Patterson is not getting a 5th year. He played the last 3 games of his freshman year at Ole Miss. What don't you people understand? Th 4 game rule is not retroactive.
December 10th, 2019 at 5:27 PM ^
The rule explicitly states that you can't retroactively earn an extra redshirt IIRC. Patterson is probably out. Carlo still may be okay if he got an "injury" early on. Also, I think McKeon already accepted an invite to one of those senior bowls.
December 10th, 2019 at 5:35 PM ^
I’ve read the 4-game rule isn’t retroactive too, but wasn’t Patterson injured that year? Couldn’t he could apply for a 5th year for medical reasons? I’m pretty sure players have done that before, retroactively medically redshirted.
December 10th, 2019 at 5:52 PM ^
Definitely they have. See: MSU football
December 10th, 2019 at 6:08 PM ^
I mean, Michigan retroactively did that for Devin Gardner. So it's smart. Don't hate the player, hate the game.
December 10th, 2019 at 6:24 PM ^
The issue with Shea is that he played at the end of that season rather than the start. Didn't the old rule only work through week ___?
December 10th, 2019 at 6:34 PM ^
Yup, first half of the season only.
December 10th, 2019 at 8:57 PM ^
Not if he played in the second half of the season.
