Guys who can come back for a 5th year in 2020

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on December 10th, 2019 at 5:07 PM

With the roster being listed by academic year instead of eligibility--a change Harbaugh made in 2016--there is some confusion on who is actually what. I remember when Michigan used to list redshirts. Made things a lot easier.

Anyways, I combed through the entire roster and looked through statistics. Here are all the scholarship guys who can return in 2020 for a 5th year. All of them are actually redshirt JRs besides Shea who can apply for a redshirt since he only played 3 games in 2016 at Ole Miss.

  • Carlo Kemp- Only played in 2 games in 2016

  • Shea Patterson- Only played in 3 games in 2016 at Ole Miss

  • Quinn Nordin- Did not play in a game in 2016

  • Devin Gil- DNP in 2016

  • Tru Wilson- Only played in 1 game in 2016

  • Michael Dwumfour- Only played in 1 game in 2016

  • Stephen Spanellis- DNP in 2016

  • Nick Eubanks- Only played in 1 game in 2016

  • Sean McKeon- Only played in 4 games in 2016

Josh Uche was on this list until he declared for the Draft recently. Can and will return are two different things.

I'm under the assumption that Kemp, Dwumfor, Eubanks, and Spanellis are back, and Nordin and Gill are a possibility to may want to go elsewhere as they may find more opportunities elsewhere.  Wilson is assumed gone.  We'll have Haskins & Charbonnet as co-starters back.  Evans may return.  And, Corum is coming in as a freshman.  McKeon and Uche are as well as they have announced for the draft.  There is buzz on Patterson, but nothing concrete from any real source so I'd be cautious on that one.  I'd assume he's gone until proven otherwise.

Obviously the big keys for the team are the DTs.  Kemp & Dwumfor were solid but not great, but will be needed for depth.

The four game ruling for red shirting is not retroactive so technically Shea can not come back as his eligibility is up. He would need to petition the NCAA. He’s had one big decision go his way not sure he would get a second. McKeon has declared for the senior bowl so he is gone. I remember seeing Kemp interviewed before the OSU game and he stated it would be his last game at the big house. Now that could change but he did make that comment. I would expect the others to be back

Didn’t Kemp make some comment before the season that this was his last year?

According to Seth in the recent front page article "Stats, Redshirt, and Attrition Report 2019" he notes:

Attrition/Graduation: Michigan will try to get a retroactive redshirt on Carlo Kemp

So, it appears that it remains to be seen, but UM intends to attempt to get him back.

This is not really accurate. The 4 game thing didn’t exist in 2016. The only way you can get a redshirt if you played, is for a medical. Some of these guys probably can because they had an “injury”. Shea can’t since he played at the end of the season. Unless they start making up new rules.

Shea is gone.  If he actually came back then one of Milton and Dylan would immediately go to the portal.

Everyone else Is expect to come back.  Really excited for Eubanks, think he and McKeon will Kill it in this offense now that it’s fully installed and everyone is on the same page.

There’s no way Shea is back. He played as a freshman because of an injury to the starter at Ole Miss. It’s not going to happen. The four game rule didn’t exist his freshman year.

I don't know if anyone knows. There was a story this week that the NCAA is already thinking about  reevaluating the 4-game redshirt rule due to abuse by schools and upperclassmen which was not the intended use of the rule. I personally think they should keep it the way it is, but this is the NCAA we are talking about. It's a West Virginia paper so not the best source, but the WVU AD is the chair of the  NCAA oversight committee.

Shea's lawyer from when he transferred to Michigan is now part of the NCAA on the "complicated case unit," so he's got that going for him. I wouldn't underestimate the likelihood of the retroactive part of the rule getting changed.

Patterson does not qualify for the new Redshirt rule.  It is not retroactive. That was stupid speculation that has now turned into complete internet stupidity.

Patterson's only chance at Redshirt is medical and seeing that he played in every game, his chance at that is ZERO.
