Georgia 247 thread discussing their covid protocols

Submitted by MrWoodson on December 22nd, 2021 at 11:16 AM

Per a Georgia 247 staff member:

"Players and staffers who test positive are required to quarantine 10 days from when symptoms began.

I've done some digging on the testing out of the COVID protocol and I believe the rule is the individual must test negative twice and 24 hours apart in order to exit quarantine early. As of right now, there's no surveillance testing at all, to my knowledge, unless the individual is unvaccinated. Players who show COVID symptoms are tested."

That's how I read it, too. Also, I have scoured everywhere and can find little to nothing on official CFP covid protocols. Maybe the CFP Committee is leaving vague for max flexibility, but it seems as of right now the teams are in charge of their own protocols. I even checked the Orange Bowl and Hard Rock Stadium websites. As far as I can tell, their is no vax mandate for anyone. And no mask mandate except for unvaxed Hard Rock Stadium employees. They recommend mask usage for guests, but do dot mandate it. I am not sure this even falls under SEC or B1G control, because it is not a conference game and the game is at a neutral site.

People should only be tested if they have symptoms. At this point, everyone is either vaxxed or has chosen not to be, and this strain is much more mild. The testing of perfectly healthy and 3x vaxxed people is just silly, and finds too many false positives. Also, asymptomatic people cannot spread this, this has been know for a long time now. We have to adjust with all this new info.

On this thread we have one poster saying that asymptomatic carriers can spread COVID and another saying that they can't. Yay, internet!

As for the severity of Omicron--what I've read is that data suggests it may be milder, but some caveats apply. I can't remember the details, but other factors in South Africa (the younger population, the level of immunity in the population) may explain why Omicron cases were milder.

Compare the plots of cases vs. deaths for the previous waves in South Africa vs. the current wave (you can do this easily on Google). Same thing in the UK. The much lower death rate in the Omicron wave is pretty remarkable (and a good thing!). This is comparing waves in the same population, not something unique to SA. It’s also the expected progression of a viral pandemic (more contagious, less deadly is what evolution would tend to select for).

From the very beginning with SARS-CoV-2 or "Covid Classic," asymptomatic individuals are not just contagious, but may be at peak contagiousness. Recall that symptoms are the result of the immune response, not viral load. The immune response lags a few days behind, thus so do the symptoms (this wasn't true with SARS or MERS because they didn't enter cells as efficiently upon infection).

There’s actual multiple studies out as of today to suggest omicron is more mild.  80% less likely to result in hospitalization (South Africa) & 66% less likely to result in hospitalization (Scotland).

Seems way too early to be confident in this data, but encouraging nonetheless.  Give it another 2-4 weeks before we have a better understanding of the severity.

The CFP is an opportunity of a lifetime for these kids (and coaches).

They should all be brought back together, isolated in the submarine, and tested every day.

I know it's Christmas, but college sports teams often have activities scheduled over the Christmas holiday.  And for nothing as big as the CFP.

If you let players go back to their home towns now and mingle with whomever, you are just asking for them to get Omicron.

I posted about C19 being a wild card with teams, sports scheduling, and bowl games in general and idiots like M(oron) forLife jumped down my throat for even mentioning it. That was followed by an idiot copying9 and pasting year old data on the alpha and delta variants as if he/she/they were some kind of authority.

So I don't see this thread ending well.

The negative test twice 24 hrs apart is an NFL rule. Don't know that I've heard about it being used in NCAA. Aside from one random comment on a message board, does anyone know if it's true?

I sure would like to see the playoffs take place with all four schools sporting virtually full rosters.  Not interested in seeing asterisks next to the winner’s name, especially if it reads “Michigan.”

There's a huge asterisk on our loss this year that virtually all of the CFB world recognizes as an asterisk.

Our win against OSU in 2011 will always feel like an asterisk win to me.

If Michigan barely beats a half strength Georgia then loses to a full strength Bama, or barely beats both of them while they are both at half strength then all you're going to hear about is how it took covid for the B1G to beat the SEC.

Any recruit seriously considering ANY of these schools is ALSO going to be looking at all of these factors.

So, gotta say I disagree.

The CFB world recognizes the asterisk on the MSU loss in the context of this year, but it’s not going to stop people from including it in the “Harbaugh can’t beat Mel Tucker / Harbaugh can’t consistently beat his rivals” narrative next year. Hell, the 2015 loss featured even worse officiating and is still only remembered as “trouble with the punt” (itself a pretty fluky way to lose) and one more rivalry loss.
