Yeah, so the answer is for him to not know what is going on with his play designs? That makes sense.
September 23rd, 2019 at 4:49 PM ^
No thanks, we don't need another 3 ring circus like we had in 2014.
September 23rd, 2019 at 6:58 PM ^
And that's different compared to now?
September 23rd, 2019 at 4:50 PM ^
Gattis needs to have full control over personnel groupings and play calls. Where he does this from is immaterial.
September 23rd, 2019 at 5:04 PM ^
Simply put and so true.
September 23rd, 2019 at 5:24 PM ^
I'm not so sure that he didn't. And I'm not sure that his having wasn't actually our primary problem on O. It felt like he didn't have a clue what he was doing, and Harbaugh let it happen b/c he was hopping Gattis would figure it out.
September 23rd, 2019 at 5:41 PM ^
You’re telling me Josh Gattis, a dude who laughed at the notion of having a FB on the football team in 2019 when he was hired, trotted out Ben Mason on the first drive of the game? Or he designed a screen pass to Nick Eubanks instead of Mike Sainristil?
Cmon man.
September 23rd, 2019 at 6:46 PM ^
In no way was Mason trotted out as a FB. He was a power RB in a single RB formation.
At both PSU and Alabama he was part of offenses that ran the same arrow RPO with the TE. It’s a common part of the O
So to answer your questions, yes, both are very possibly Gattis’s decisions
September 23rd, 2019 at 7:02 PM ^
Unpopular hot take: The Mason carry wasn't a bad call. Mason was a solid power runner last year and he looked like he gained about 5 on the play. He covered the ball with both hands. It was just really, really bad luck that there were TWO helmets that hit the ball. No back is holding onto that.
September 23rd, 2019 at 10:01 PM ^
Yes...that was likely Gattis. I think Michigan ran the arrow RPO to the TE in the Army game.
September 23rd, 2019 at 5:51 PM ^
So after a bye week, having 2 weeks to go over Wisconsin's defense, you don't have 20 plays that you want to try?
Harbaugh and Gattis didn't come up with a game plan? Actually, apparently not, cuz the 2nd offensive play of the game, they had NO idea who to get on the field and what to run.
1st and goal and you have to call a frickin time out cuz you have no idea what to call? Or was it conflict between Harbaugh and Gattis on what to do?
Either way, its the coaches fault, imo.
September 23rd, 2019 at 6:58 PM ^
In the press conference today Harbaugh was asked about this. He said there was a flag on the play, and they thought it could have been facemasking, which would have meant half the distance to the goal. They were asking about it when they heard over the PA that there was no flag it was inadvertently dropped. The clock had started but they were late getting the play in.
At first it sounded like a lame excuse but it a little sense.
September 23rd, 2019 at 7:21 PM ^
I want to know who decided to give the ball to a defensive tackle on a handoff 1st and goal from the 8 yard line.
September 23rd, 2019 at 8:57 PM ^
Josh Gattis. Have you been reading?
September 23rd, 2019 at 10:16 PM ^
No, most here don't. They just see something they don't like and assume it's Harbaughs fault. Even though so far Harbaughs offense has been decidedly better than what we've seen this year.
September 24th, 2019 at 12:30 PM ^
Well there is 1) Gattis has been outspoken about speed in space a dive with a DT is not that and 2) Harbaugh has shown in his time at Michigan he likes blocky catchy types circumstantial sure but if it looks like a dog and barks like a dog. To be clear if it was last year and mason was still a starting FB and had been practicing at that position all off season I wouldn’t have had an issue and he probably wouldn’t have fumbled.
September 24th, 2019 at 1:48 PM ^
Harbaugh would have lined up under center and handed the ball to a DT in the FB position rather than a shotgun hand off to a HB. I think the fact that it was Mason just says a lot more about our RBs abilities in short yardage situations with Charbonnet "limited."
September 23rd, 2019 at 4:50 PM ^
I'm curious what this guy does all week at practices. Can he coach the basics?
September 23rd, 2019 at 4:51 PM ^
Worked great for Drevno...
September 23rd, 2019 at 4:52 PM ^
Nope. That's not it.
September 23rd, 2019 at 4:57 PM ^
He needs to get the hell out of somewhere
September 23rd, 2019 at 4:57 PM ^
Could he go back to Alabama's sideline ?
September 23rd, 2019 at 4:59 PM ^
Can he play QB?
September 23rd, 2019 at 5:00 PM ^
Yeah but should he wear headphones?
Edit: headset, not headphones. These shit posts for 2 straight days have worn me thin.
September 23rd, 2019 at 5:01 PM ^
Not if he wants to hear football!
September 23rd, 2019 at 5:00 PM ^
Wrong. Another great post.
September 23rd, 2019 at 5:05 PM ^
My kingdom for a sticky thread where all these takes could just live.
September 23rd, 2019 at 5:07 PM ^
Harbaugh should bring in someone like Matt Canada in as an offensive analyst to teach Gattis how to call plays and be a coordinator. He's available and could be a great mentor the rest of the year. It's Gattis's show, and if he's a great football mind and innovator, then bring in someone who has done the job at a high level. Canada had one bad year at LSU but had the rug pulled out from under him.
September 23rd, 2019 at 5:08 PM ^
Trump won't let Canadas across the border.
September 23rd, 2019 at 5:46 PM ^
Wrong border.
September 23rd, 2019 at 5:07 PM ^
To fight Harbaugh over who gets to call plays?
September 23rd, 2019 at 5:07 PM ^
There are no chicken wings on the sidelines.
September 25th, 2019 at 11:56 AM ^
def need more wings
September 23rd, 2019 at 5:09 PM ^
But is he gonna keep those khakis wrinkle free?
September 23rd, 2019 at 5:20 PM ^
The football program equivalent to shuffling the deck chairs.
September 23rd, 2019 at 5:20 PM ^
And this weeks winner for most absurd hawt take goes to Wings of Distinction.
September 23rd, 2019 at 7:32 PM ^
Don't be so quick to judge. The week is still young.
You haven't even read my Cade McNamara thread yet...
;) :P

How does my absurd post look now ?
Asshole.

Toll Booth Willie will not get out of the BOOOOOOTHA!
September 23rd, 2019 at 5:21 PM ^
Headset or no?
September 23rd, 2019 at 5:39 PM ^
What the hell, did I miss where this was free thread starter week? Outside of gameday, we hardly crack 100 comments in any thread and all of the sudden these thread starters are coming out of the woodwork. Even in the offseason I've never seen so many threads.
September 23rd, 2019 at 5:42 PM ^
Your title made think of this old Billy Ocean song and now I can't stop singing it:
Get outta my dreams.....get into my car (beep beep ooh yeah)! Getta outta my dreams (get in the back seat baby).... get into my car (oooh oooh oooh oooh oooh)! I said hey (HEY) you (YOU), get into my car"
Classic 80's.

I believe being in the booth all game is something new for him. WR coaches are typically on the field. It might help him get control over the offense by being able to corral them on the sidelines instead of counting on the other coaches. Not all OCs are up in the booth. I wouldn’t have a problem if he was on the sidelines this Sat. It would prove he’s trying all options to get things moving in a positive direction. If Harbaugh’s constantly in his ear or not, then you might learn something about what’s going on.
September 23rd, 2019 at 6:26 PM ^
Not to mention gathering guys around for, you know, in-game coaching.
With a new offense and terminology, this might be important....
Didn't think I needed to point out these things with all the knowledge on this board.
Alas....
September 23rd, 2019 at 6:10 PM ^
Read Spath's just released article on thoughts / revelations from former players, including a 2017 player.
September 23rd, 2019 at 6:56 PM ^
Went out and found the article. It’s actually quite good and worth a read.

Why is everyone so convinced Gattis is a good OC? He was basically a recruiter and Wide receivers coach at Alabama and an assistant OC for one season. He has never called plays anywhere but Michigan and it is VERY possible that he is flat out shit at it.
September 23rd, 2019 at 6:44 PM ^
When Moorehead left PSU James Franklin had a choice between Gattis and Ricky Rhane, 2 guys who were on his staff for 6 years.
He knew the guy he didn’t promote wouldn’t stick around. He knew if he made an outside hire, both guys would leave
He didn’t choose Gattis.
September 23rd, 2019 at 8:22 PM ^
Well there you have it!
September 23rd, 2019 at 6:31 PM ^
Said this about Al Borges. Didn’t help. It’s a leadership issue within the whole team, including coaches.
