Dante Moore Commits to Oregon
Happy Trails to our only QB target. Back to the drawing board for Weiss and Harbaugh.

The Cade that led us to an 11-1 season with a victory over OSU, and a BIG Championship?
I'm of the opinion that his path to starting at Michigan was as big of a factor, if not more, than money. I know both are important here....
Possibly
What path to starting? JJ will be a Junior by the time he steps on campus. Sit for a year, JJ goes to the NFL and he’s competing with Denegal and Orji for the job.
How is that path any different than what he’ll experience at Oregon?
Doesn't matter. He has plenty of reasons to sign for Oregon. Harbaugh isn't playing that game.
Rumored $3.6M in NIL and jobs at Nike for 6 family members.
If that's true, he would've been insane to turn it down.
So by Portland cost-of-living standards, that'll get you 2,500 square feet and a nice white picket fence.
LOL. Not too much of an exaggeration. A bit less expensive in the Cully neighborhood where I live though. One meth house and a different heroin-centric one are all within two blocks, but at least they keep the property taxes down.
Eh... you can get a nice ranch near Mt. Tabor for a bit over 300K.
Portland isn't cheap - but you don't need to be a millionaire to buy a reasonable home.
So the same old story but this time out in the open? Wasn't this something like what Reggie Bush and family got? Up front money, a new house and jobs? And he had to give up his Heisman for it. Now it's celebrated.
That's wild if six family members are getting Nike jobs. So many questions come to my mind, are these people going to quit whatever they are doing now? Are they going to move to Beaverton and work at Nike HQ? Doing what exactly? Do they have to interview? What happens if Dante transfers? Blows my mind, although who knows if it's even true.
Totally legal and legit, no doubt. Pocket change for Phil Knight. He finds more money than that between the cushions of his $10,000,000 couch. Have a great life Dante
And still a senior-to-be in High School. Good for Dante. And up to 6 of his family members. If you were Cade or JJ, how would you feel about this? Harbaugh considers this. Team chemistry...
Good luck to him. Hope he avoids dysentery.
You mean "happy trails," right?
Me, too
There just aren't many compelling reasons for an elite 5 star QB to want to come to Michigan right now. No upfront NIL money, average to maybe slightly above average QB development, offensive system that favors the run more than the pass, and having to potentially sit behind JJ/Cade for 2 or more years.
Dante will still be in HS in '22, so "potentially" he could have done in '23 what JJ did in '21 - take significant snaps but not start.
Then "potentially" JJ could enter the draft in '24, clearing the path for Dante to start 2 more seasons before he too entered the draft.
Cannot picture any scenario where he would just "sit behind Cade/JJ for 2 or more years" - unless he's just not as good as billed.
And that's the scenario I'm pulling for now! I don't root for Oregon!
So you're lamenting having Cade and JJ for maybe 2 more years? Got it!
If Oregon is going to offer Moore a big pile of money and Michigan isn't, then what can you do? I completely get Harbaugh's supposed stance on not wanting to offer money to some kid who in his eyes hasn't earned it yet. Completely get that.
All I can say though is that he'd better be ready to lose these big time recruiting battles a hell of lot more than he expects to win them now.
You can't expect 17-18 year old kids to just say no to a crap-ton of money. I know I wouldn't have. Especially if they or their family don't already have good financial resources. Some kids aren't willing to wait for NIL opportunities down the road and effectively bet on themselves. Most of them will take the money upfront and still be ready to cash in for more opportunities down the road when/if they prove themselves on the field.
The reality is we lost Moore when Gattis left Michigan. Also a reality that this NIL was probably going to get him in the end regardless of point 1.
Most here wanted Gattis gone all along. And we don't know how effective Weiss is as a recruiter. Cut the knee-jerk nonsense.
There is nothing that prevents Michigan and it’s boosters from getting Cade and JJ millions to show them value right now. People keep mocking Harbaugh’s approach, but I get it. If you love football and want to be at Michigan, we can get you millions of dollars. But if all you care about is millions of dollars, and Michigan is nothing more than a funnel for that money, you are probably not going to like playing for Harbaugh anyway. It’s a subtle difference, but an important one.
The key is getting our top players paid a lot ASAP, so that a going rate is established. Instead of “I will pay you $3M to come to Michigan,” it is simply “Michigan QBs earn $3M.” Not some imaginary number, but one being received by a real player in real time. And make sure top recruits room with the highly compensated kids. They can answer all of the questions that the coaches cannot (or will not).
Exactly this. We should be making those QBs richest players in college. That is something they should get behind. But, they will say what about that kid who is sitting on the bench and helps with every practice. If we take that route, the only players you are going to get are players who can't get a deal or ones who are ultimate team players. I don't know many teenagers who are that selfless. I wasn't one.
Typical 5 star starts in season 1 but isn't good. Is good in seasons 2 and 3 but not great and may skip bowl game, then leaves.
Best players are those who stick around and become team leaders in addition to being great athletes. Also more fun to watch and root for, and that's the point for me.
You're probably correct. And, yet, two nice additions to our class recently. Who knows?
Good. Get your money.
Welp, at least we got Fredrick Moore...
So we just going to the portal again?
That would be a smart move!
Michigan has the unbearable distinction of not participating in PFP (pay for play) when signing Freshman, but ALSO having too stringent an Admissions department to bring in those 5 star sophomores as transfers. OY!
NIL aside (probably biggest factor), I feel people are underestimating the impact of having to most likely sit behind/beat out JJ for first 2 years on campus. In today's world if your a big time qb recruit, you are most likely looking to start from day 1 or year 2 at the absolute latest.
You're implying that JJ will stick around all 4 years...sure hope you're right but I think that is doubtful. Dante's freshman year will be JJ's junior year.
Odds are much more likely that JJ is there 4 years rather than able to leave as an early entrant. I'd prefer he is unreal, wins a Heisman, Natty, and leaves after 3 years. Unfortunately the odds are not in the favor of that scenario.
This sucks, but on to the next one. Hopefully we can get Jadyn Davis next cycle. Should have some good recruiting news on the defensive side later today
And Amir Herring commits to Michigan! Thoughts?
Well from the sounds of it they almost messed up that slam dunk…so…yeah…
Fair point. We love him for that. Hope UM does good by him with NIL.
And Amir Herring commits to Michigan! Thoughts?
So nice got to say it twice.
Got antsy about it posting. Possibly more...
It looks like this decision is more of a playing time decision than a money decision, maybe both. Dante was going to sit on the bench a likely 2 years at Michigan behind M & M. He will be competing against inexperienced players plus senior transfer Bo Nix at Oregon. He can always transfer back to Michigan if the scenario changes at either school. it looks like a wise decision for his career, although the uncertainty of conference alignments may impact him somewhat.
Pretty pretty pretty bad
the "I'm sure it wasn't NIL that made the difference" people sure do live in a magical place that I hope to visit one day.
We don’t know what is in the minds of these kids and all we do know is that there is a ton of money floating around out in the world of recruiting.100,000 is hard to turn down much less a million. The NCAA was a joke prior to NIL now they are a toothless tiger. You can either live with it or quit watching college football.I hate it but I know what will be on my tv come fall.
The frustrating thing aside from losing out on both of those QB commitments is that They didn’t offer/pursue any other QB’s for 2023. That’s mismanagement plain and simple.
Seems like Weiss can call plays but his recruiting doesn’t seem to be doing so hot.
people complained about the recruiting being disorganized and messy but that was supposed to be fixed but the recruiting board looks like what we used to make fun of state for.
the only thing I can think of is they are in a numbers crunch with scholarships given the Covid year and are only going to take a QB if the guy is a 5 star number 8 overall player, but then again only scholarship players at the position on the team and half those are incoming freshman.
Its getting worse!
Harbaugh is not about paying HS seniors-to-be big NIL contracts. This isn't news. Get your head outta your butt. What the fuck is wrong with people?
