Wait, so our defensive coordinators are two NFL guys who don't have any coordinator experience?
January 19th, 2021 at 4:07 PM ^
Just like Jeff Hafley at OSU - Idk if this is the right way to go or not, but it's not the worst idea
January 19th, 2021 at 4:09 PM ^
I prefer this approach to The Lance Anderson Restoration
January 19th, 2021 at 4:12 PM ^
Yeah but OSU had the great idea to pair their young guy with no experience with a very experienced guy.
January 19th, 2021 at 4:24 PM ^
Michigan had the same idea with Juwan Howard and Phil Martelli. It makes sense in its simplicity. Linguist may end up doing well (especially as a recruiter) but two first time DCs is scary.
January 19th, 2021 at 4:28 PM ^
Yeah learning from an experienced coach seems more ideal than learning on the job with another inexperienced guy
January 20th, 2021 at 4:27 AM ^
Wasn't Warinner a Co-Offensive Coordinator with someone at Ohio before he left for Minny? That didn't seem to work out very well but maybe this will, who knows?
It seems like having both of the guys from the Ravens as Co-Coordinators would've been more awesome, assuming they got along and had something of a Vulcan mind-meld between them.
Which brings up the following Question: Which gig is more appealing, assuming about the same salary? Co-Defensive Coordinator at Michigan, or Sole Defensive Coordinator at Vanderbilt? Maybe Minter wasn't offered a "Co" job here, hard to say.
Interesting time for Michigan football. Critical time.
January 19th, 2021 at 4:10 PM ^
At least he has some recruiting experience.
January 19th, 2021 at 8:55 PM ^
He’s actually considered a very good recruiter
January 19th, 2021 at 4:49 PM ^
Yeah, but at least there's two...
January 19th, 2021 at 8:41 PM ^
Yeah, but at least there's two...
Good thing this is defense then... you know that old saying if you have 2 starting QBs you have 0 QBs.
January 19th, 2021 at 4:53 PM ^
Assuming Brian Jean-Mary stays, he’s been a DC.
Look around the country. The new rage seems to be hiring young up-and-comers, given the way the game has evolved very quickly as of late. Don Brown has a ton of experience. And it held Ohio State to only 118 points in the last two games.
January 19th, 2021 at 5:04 PM ^
not bad for a basketball coach!
January 19th, 2021 at 5:46 PM ^
Nobody with coordinator experience who is any good is going to hop aboard the lame duck express. Your only prayer of getting things corrected is to take risks on guys with light resumes but who seem bright and hope you've just found the next up and coming coach.
If you go back and look at when Brian Kelly looked like he was about done at Notre Dame, the way he got off the mat and ended up with a team that could make the playoff is he jettisoned his whole coaching staff and replaced them with young unproven guys that had potential. It worked out and here he still is.
January 20th, 2021 at 12:34 AM ^
Great point!
January 19th, 2021 at 5:50 PM ^
Linguist was the defensive passing game coordinator at Iowa State and U of Buffalo
January 20th, 2021 at 3:54 AM ^
Is there any place he hasn't been yet? I mean, for such a young guy, he sure gets around.
January 20th, 2021 at 12:42 AM ^
This link talks up his recruiting prowess
January 19th, 2021 at 3:54 PM ^
What a cunning move on our part.
January 19th, 2021 at 4:33 PM ^
He’s worked his way up the ranks. Has been as high as a Colonel Linquist.
January 19th, 2021 at 6:37 PM ^
Word is -- he's a cunning Linguist!
January 19th, 2021 at 3:54 PM ^
Well at the very least I assume he's good with words
January 19th, 2021 at 5:30 PM ^
Anyone named Maurice has to have a silver tongue....
January 19th, 2021 at 3:55 PM ^
Feels like a Hail Mary. Let's hope its a Rodgers vs. Lions type of Hail Mary, For Jim's sake.
January 19th, 2021 at 11:02 PM ^
At this point, I’ll take a Hail Mary over a Jean-Mary.
January 19th, 2021 at 3:56 PM ^
So, I do like that McDonald is going to have a co-DC. And apparently, this guy is a hell of a recruiter!
I think really my only big concern right now is the staff is going to be REALLLLLLLYYYYY young and inexperienced. I'm hopeful that we get a few guys like Martelli on the basketball side. I do like bringing in some younger, higher energy guys but again, the staff being this young and still pretty new to coaching has me a bit concerned.
Either way you look at it, I do appreciate that Harbaugh is trying something different. It's either going to work or it's going to go to be a hot mess. Likely not in between. But either way, nobody can say he didn't at least try.
January 19th, 2021 at 4:03 PM ^
Yeah, exactly. One of those things where he’s a genius if it works and an idiot if it doesn’t. I like your glass-half-full take — it’s mine, too — just wish there was more prior evidence on the “genius” end of that spectrum.
January 19th, 2021 at 4:29 PM ^
One of the podcasts I listened to pointed out that so far Harbaugh has had a good record of hiring defensive coaching talent. Sure, he probably kept brown a year too long, but Durkin was good. Brown was good. Zordich was good. Even being able to keep Mattison was great.
Hopefully that holds true here and McDonald/Linguist are a great scheme/recruiting pair. McDonald at least has the rep of a hot up and comer; and I can't believe John would screw Jim.
I'm almost more worried about the offense. If McDonald can scheme, we have some talent. We just need a defense with half a pulse the way college football is running today. For better or worse we are geared more to be Oklahoma than the '85 Bears. So let's embrace it... but I'm worried that a Gattis O is just kind of 'meh' with flashes of excitement.
But man, the talent is tantalizing. We have good linemen, good WR's, and some good QB talent there and coming in. The RB room is stuffed even with the loss of Charbonnet. We just need some development (better routes, please, WR's. Let's get some Ruddock like development on the QBs) and some consistency with the run game (Please Mike, make that better).
January 19th, 2021 at 4:33 PM ^
Love the attitude and agree with nearly everything you said. I guess I'd just add, I don't think of it as John screwing over Jim with McDonald. I just think it's possible that, for whatever reason, it just doesn't work out. In fact, that would be our luck as of late lol
Going to be an interesting season coming up for sure.
January 19th, 2021 at 5:28 PM ^
Anyone who thinks Jim just rolled over and did what his brother said to do really has no clue.
January 19th, 2021 at 5:01 PM ^
i agree on the O. gattis better get it done this year. there is talent everywhere and the young OL got a lot of playing time this past year.
January 19th, 2021 at 5:31 PM ^
Agreed. I'm hoping Gattis' offensive failures this year had more to do with youth and Covid and less to do with him being completely clueless at how to construct an actual offense. Please lord let that be true.
The defense is going to be addition by subtraction. There is plenty of talent. I loved Brown, but he got figured out and kept trying to paper over the leaks to make it work. Sometimes you just gotta shoot the horse.
January 19th, 2021 at 4:48 PM ^
I'm wondering if they will be co-DCs or if MacDonald is the DC and Linguist is the co-DC, in practice an assistant DC?
January 19th, 2021 at 5:00 PM ^
Maybe they’ll have different purviews, given one has more recruiting experience. Like one handles on-field while the other is primarily in talent acquisition.
January 19th, 2021 at 6:21 PM ^
Yes, that's what I think is most likely.
January 19th, 2021 at 5:51 PM ^
All we have complained about is that our coaching staff is old and can't recruit. Now we are going to be extremely young and filled with highly talented aggressive recruiting coaches. I am not going to complain about that. I think these guys are talented enough to get thru the x's and o's that really only matter a few games a year now anyway.
January 19th, 2021 at 3:57 PM ^
This is good news. I really love to co-coordinators thing.
January 19th, 2021 at 3:58 PM ^
Apparently the off-season rule was to hire all coaches that are under 40 years old.
January 19th, 2021 at 6:44 PM ^
As it should IMO, well around 40 Ill say... young mans game now, just look around at NFL head coaches. Kyle Shannon, Sean McVay, Kliff K. Kevin S., Matt L.
Young smart football minds
January 19th, 2021 at 4:00 PM ^
Both of the new guys on defense have great career trajectories. I'm going to have some faith in the hires.
January 19th, 2021 at 4:45 PM ^
To be fair, the Cowboys secondary(much love for Jourdan Lewis) was trash this year. They already fired DC Mike Nolan...so they may have told this guy thanks but no thanks.
January 19th, 2021 at 4:59 PM ^
Because they didn’t have a
pass rush with all the injuries
January 19th, 2021 at 10:23 PM ^
They also signed Zeke over Byron Jones, then proceeded to spend picks on offensive players ??♂️
January 19th, 2021 at 4:01 PM ^
Linguist is a very good recruiter (as recently as 2019, when he was at TAMU) with an NFL pedigree, so sure, let's do it?
January 19th, 2021 at 4:08 PM ^
His recruiting history: https://247sports.com/Coach/Maurice-Linguist-1713/AllTimeRecruits/
January 19th, 2021 at 4:16 PM ^
First name I noticed was Jonathan Abram who was only a 3 star at the time but would later be an All-American and First Round Pick. Second name I noticed was former Michigan ATH Brian Cole. I also noticed he’s recruited a lot of JUCO players but I’m not sure how much of that will translate to Michigan. Seems like a great recruiting hire not so sure about the play calling side.
January 19th, 2021 at 4:16 PM ^
He recruited Brian Cole to Miss St!
January 19th, 2021 at 4:50 PM ^
Rashod Bateman is an impressive pull while he was at Minnesota.
January 19th, 2021 at 4:01 PM ^
Ummm, didn't the Cowboys pass defense suck this year?
January 19th, 2021 at 4:05 PM ^
Yup. That was my initial thought, too. Then again I'm sure it's hard to say how much he directly had to do with that.
Anybody know how good the defensive backs, specifically, were?
