Wasn't Warinner a Co-Offensive Coordinator with someone at Ohio before he left for Minny?  That didn't seem to work out very well but maybe this will, who knows?

It seems like having both of the guys from the Ravens as Co-Coordinators would've been more awesome, assuming they got along and had something of a Vulcan mind-meld between them.

Which brings up the following Question:  Which gig is more appealing, assuming about the same salary?  Co-Defensive Coordinator at Michigan, or Sole Defensive Coordinator at Vanderbilt?  Maybe Minter wasn't offered a "Co" job here, hard to say.

Interesting time for Michigan football.  Critical time.

Assuming Brian Jean-Mary stays, he’s been a DC.

Look around the country. The new rage seems to be hiring young up-and-comers, given the way the game has evolved very quickly as of late. Don Brown has a ton of experience. And it held Ohio State to only 118 points in the last two games.

Nobody with coordinator experience who is any good is going to hop aboard the lame duck express. Your only prayer of getting things corrected is to take risks on guys with light resumes but who seem bright and hope you've just found the next up and coming coach.

If you go back and look at when Brian Kelly looked like he was about done at Notre Dame, the way he got off the mat and ended up with a team that could make the playoff is he jettisoned his whole coaching staff and replaced them with young unproven guys that had potential. It worked out and here he still is.

So, I do like that McDonald is going to have a co-DC. And apparently, this guy is a hell of a recruiter!

I think really my only big concern right now is the staff is going to be REALLLLLLLYYYYY young and inexperienced. I'm hopeful that we get a few guys like Martelli on the basketball side. I do like bringing in some younger, higher energy guys but again, the staff being this young and still pretty new to coaching has me a bit concerned.

Either way you look at it, I do appreciate that Harbaugh is trying something different. It's either going to work or it's going to go to be a hot mess. Likely not in between. But either way, nobody can say he didn't at least try.

One of the podcasts I listened to pointed out that so far Harbaugh has had a good record of hiring defensive coaching talent. Sure, he probably kept brown a year too long, but Durkin was good. Brown was good. Zordich was good. Even being able to keep Mattison was great.

Hopefully that holds true here and McDonald/Linguist are a great scheme/recruiting pair. McDonald at least has the rep of a hot up and comer; and I can't believe John would screw Jim.

I'm almost more worried about the offense. If McDonald can scheme, we have some talent. We just need a defense with half a pulse the way college football is running today. For better or worse we are geared more to be Oklahoma than the '85 Bears. So let's embrace it... but I'm worried that a Gattis O is just kind of 'meh' with flashes of excitement.

But man, the talent is tantalizing. We have good linemen, good WR's, and some good QB talent there and coming in. The RB room is stuffed even with the loss of Charbonnet. We just need some development (better routes, please, WR's. Let's get some Ruddock like development on the QBs) and some consistency with the run game (Please Mike, make that better).

Love the attitude and agree with nearly everything you said. I guess I'd just add, I don't think of it as John screwing over Jim with McDonald. I just think it's possible that, for whatever reason, it just doesn't work out. In fact, that would be our luck as of late lol

Going to be an interesting season coming up for sure.

Agreed. I'm hoping Gattis' offensive failures this year had more to do with youth and Covid and less to do with him being completely clueless at how to construct an actual offense. Please lord let that be true.

The defense is going to be addition by subtraction. There is plenty of talent. I loved Brown, but he got figured out and kept trying to paper over the leaks to make it work. Sometimes you just gotta shoot the horse.

All we have complained about is that our coaching staff is old and can't recruit.  Now we are going to be extremely young and filled with highly talented aggressive recruiting coaches.  I am not going to complain about that.  I think these guys are talented enough to get thru the x's and o's that really only matter a few games a year now anyway.

First name I noticed was Jonathan Abram who was only a 3 star at the time but would later be an All-American and First Round Pick. Second name I noticed was former Michigan ATH Brian Cole. I also noticed he’s recruited a lot of JUCO players but I’m not sure how much of that will translate to Michigan. Seems like a great recruiting hire not so sure about the play calling side.
