Corum Running Out of Bounds?

Submitted by WalterWhite_88 on November 20th, 2022 at 4:59 PM

I'm sure some people will say this isn't worth a new thread, but anybody have any ideas why Corum purposely ran out of bounds on the long screen pass in the 1st quarter? I'd say there was a 50/50 shot that Corum avoids that desperate dive tackle that the Illini player makes and then goes for a TD to make the game 14-0. That decision to run out of bounds could have been costly if Michigan ends up losing. Was he gassed for some reason? Trying to avoid the tackle and play it safe to avoid potential injury?

Then don’t click on it or start your own majestic thread.  Jesus Christ.  You know what’s more asinine than dumb threads?   Self-righteous assholes who click, read and then respond to threads just to say they’re dumb.  Pathetic.

I actually think his question is an interesting one and was struggling for an answer to this yesterday.  Now, rather than discuss it on a designated discussion board, I have to read endless pointless replies from jackasses like you.

There were a couple times he did that yesterday. He's obviously not afraid to take a hit. I chalked it up to a guy who knows he's going to take 30-40 hits a game deciding it's not worth it to take one for the sake of an extra yard after an already long gain.

At this time of the year, very single player has some minor injury and some more. When I arrived on UM, there was an issue with my room and they put me in the same dorm as the football teams. I remember that by November, not a single player was not 100%. The backup RB could not lift his arms because of a shoulder injury and he was carrying the ball and making blocks on the following Saturday.

Coaches may have told him not take unnecessary punishments, especially with him being the only viable RB.

my college football playing sons would tell you the same re:  by that time of the year anybody getting any kind of regular snaps is dinged up at least a little, and many are significantly more than a little.

the one whose season just ended has/had: signif thumb issue, ankle, groin (getting much better though) and an elbow dealy-do.

After reading this exhausting thread I went back and reviewed the play I believe is in question.
It happens on third down with 8:50 remaining in the first quarter. We are on the 7 and a little slip screen to Corum and he is off. OLU takes out one guy at the LOS and then the safety at the 20.
In all honesty, when Corum steps out at the 49 a guy is diving at his ankles.  It looks to me like the guy would have tackled Corum if Corum didn’t step to the left, which took him out of bounds.  The tacklers face and arms all end up exactly where Corum would have been if not for stepping OB.
I know, this a reasoned and researched viewpoint which has no place in hate week so carry on.

I think Corum was trying to avoid abuse to his body. The proper thing to do in that kind of a trailing situation as a cut, and his case would’ve been to cut sharply to the right. A zigzag pattern will extend a run, and properly done can result in a touchdown. I don’t think Corum was 100% Saturday at all, even from the get-go.

He was maybe/probably going to get caught, especially since he seemed to lack his usual explosion. But it’s not like Corum to just give up and slide out of bounds. He’s one who normally pushes through contact. It was clearly out of character. Not sure how anyone could interpret it differently.

DB is coming at a slight angle from the inside.  Blake avoids the swipe with the OOB cut.  It looks like if he cut back inside he gets caught.  Prob part instinct to avoid going down by cutting left, prob also some instructions pregame not to be a hero and get hurt.  No way was just a give up by BC.

Is that the play where JJ threw a nice block 40 yards down field that didn't matter because Corum went oob early? I chalk it up to Harbaugh saying don't get injured after you already have the 1st down.

It was curious for sure.

He could have cut in and picked up more on the guy that was on him or kept going and broke the tackle. The pursuit was going to get there but there was definitely more yards available.

Corum is tough as nails but he seemed just a little sluggish yesterday. The guy has been a warrior.

If he cuts it back inside that might be a TD.  It was definitely a curious decision.  Maybe he was gassed?  Running in cold weather can take it out if you.  Woodson barely made that punt return TD back in 97 because he was so winded in the cold weather and he wasn’t trying to go 98 yards.

In my personal opinion, and it is only an opinion, Corum has looked noticeably less explosive in second half of the season in the open field.  That, combined with the relative benign circumstances that lead to yesterday’s injury, leads me to believe that he has likely been nursing a knee/ankle injury for some of the season.  I think it was ice cold, the week before OSU, and he was being extra cautious not take high impact contact.
