At some point Aaron Hernandez stood at a crossroad - he got the better end of a deal, walked away and the rest is history. Their days will be spent surrounded by people telling them they got a bad deal because Valenti said so. Not hitting the other little boys is something we learn early - not as a college student. I'm not suggesting their lives be ruined, but a light sentence may not be the best sentence.

An insincere apology, that will teach them.......what? Community service is worthless as the primary form of punishment; Secondary maybe. Need to throw the bums in jail, even for a short period, maybe a weekend, to put the fear of God in them!

Maybe that would have helped raper Appling see the errors of his ways! Didn't work for Winston though.

I'm tired of the coddling of athletes.

The way I'm reading this is that university property isn't a weapon-free school zone, but baseline felonious assault still seems to fit.

They will do nothing and we’re never going to do anything.   If charges were pressed they will say they are going to let the justice system handle it.

If no charges were pressed then that would have been there excuse for no punishment.

it is just another toothless organization that exists only to make money.

Well, if it's anything like the way they dealt with the racial slur hurled at an MSU hockey player by an OSU hockey player during a game, then.....nothing, unless their backs are absolutely against the wall and public outcry is so loud that they just can't ignore it.

NY - it's probably semantics, but I don't know if I'd use the word "swiftly".   A better phrase, respectfully, IMO - would be "with deliberate speed".   It doesn't seem like this process was rushed, nor were the actions delayed for any reason.

I'm glad they reached the conclusion they did, and certainly hope all of their evidence gathering was thorough and "by the book".

Let justice be served - with fairness to all involved.

Sigh. I just don't see how this helps anybody. Kick a few of these guys off the team, suspend the rest, and issue another formal apology. Putting a felony on these guys records just so some Michigan fans can be happy about retribution is such overkill. I hope they get dropped or get to misdemeanors that eventually expunge. No sense putting this matter into the terribly broken criminal "justice" system.

Grown ass adult hyper physically capable athletes group assaulted another human being.

This is illegal, which is why they are being charged, if found guilty then they are literally a group of adults guilty of assaulting another human.

I think maybe you need to take this out of the context of football. This is a serious issue, people die in fist fights quite regularly, and also, every other bit of group assaulting someone isn't even remotely OK (at least in this context).

I'm a little saddened that you and multiple other people think being grounded from sports-ball for a few games is a just punishment for a group of adults assaulting someone over football.

I don't think them being grounded from sports ball is enough,  but the only reason the county may be looked at weird for pleading down is because a bunch of sports ball fans who have never paid attention that pleading down nearly always happens will be  outraged that it happened this time.    If you want them to be treated like it happened in a bar with non athletes,  you are looking at it.

Exactly, heck even Marty McSorley was charged after bashing Donald Brashear in the head with a stick, and that was during the game!  While he was suspended for the season (and playoffs), he was also charged with assault with a weapon (Canadian court) , of course he only did 18 months of probation, but still.

After the conviction they extended his suspension for a full year, longest in NHL history for an on-ice incident.  He never played in the NHL again.

Again, this incident happened on the ice during a game, using your equipment to inflict harm on another person after the game is different, and IMO much worse.  The felony charge reflects it perfectly.

Well this all might be reduced quite a bit, I will be surprised if anyone ends up with a felony. At least that’s how it seems to me.  But more importantly, the one guy was beating the crap out of the other with his helmet.  That’s a criminal Justice issue, regardless of anyone’s feelings. It would be the same way for players for other teams or people in a street fight.  There are actual victims here, so it’s really not relevant how we feel about retribution.

Law does not work to appease fans. What a horrible take. It is about justice. Or so I thought. This should stop this ever happening again.

I seriously those players learn from it and model citizens. Show the world how they can learn and make a difference.

Broken criminal justice system cannot be fixed if we do what you are suggesting.
