Charges filed on 7 MSU Players for Tunnel Assault
November 24th, 2022 at 11:50 AM ^
New post on rcmb. So much for toning it down. They have doubled down . THIS IS WAR!! They have lost all sense of reality if they ever had any.
November 23rd, 2022 at 1:59 PM ^
Glad they took the time and got the facts straight. Now punish them to the full extent of the law.
November 23rd, 2022 at 3:13 PM ^
Admission of wrong doing, an apology to those transgressed and community service is more than adequate in my opinion. They are young men influenced by an institution they were wrong no need to bury them behind that woodshed of theirs.
November 23rd, 2022 at 4:41 PM ^
Agree. I would assume that is what will happen. No reason to destroy their lives over this. I would expect the felony will be plead down as well. (assuming that Crump does not have a long list of priors)
November 23rd, 2022 at 5:34 PM ^
On the other hand, with this light sentence they will think they can get away with ganging up on a dude and beating the shit out of him.
November 23rd, 2022 at 7:31 PM ^
At some point Aaron Hernandez stood at a crossroad - he got the better end of a deal, walked away and the rest is history. Their days will be spent surrounded by people telling them they got a bad deal because Valenti said so. Not hitting the other little boys is something we learn early - not as a college student. I'm not suggesting their lives be ruined, but a light sentence may not be the best sentence.
November 23rd, 2022 at 4:49 PM ^
Agreed. Except for the helmet dude. I do think he should get something more. Not a “throw the book at him” more, but community service seems light for such an intentional act of violence.
November 23rd, 2022 at 5:04 PM ^
I would expect him to get a little more, some days in Jail as an example, but still don't think he should get a felony as that can really screw his life up long term. Again, assuming this is his first real screw up, I tend to think second chances are best.
November 23rd, 2022 at 5:15 PM ^
Repeatedly battering a human being over the head with a potentially deadly weapon can really screw someones life up long term. Crump should have his life screwed up for that. Throw the book at him and hope it helps deter this from happening again.
November 23rd, 2022 at 5:35 PM ^
Agree!
November 23rd, 2022 at 6:06 PM ^
Yeah he needs counseling and probation to ensure that he’s attending therapy.
November 23rd, 2022 at 11:59 PM ^
Enough of this BS. If it was someone you know that got ambushed you’d be singing a different song. There are rules. There are consequences.
November 24th, 2022 at 2:21 AM ^
An insincere apology, that will teach them.......what? Community service is worthless as the primary form of punishment; Secondary maybe. Need to throw the bums in jail, even for a short period, maybe a weekend, to put the fear of God in them!
Maybe that would have helped raper Appling see the errors of his ways! Didn't work for Winston though.
I'm tired of the coddling of athletes.
November 23rd, 2022 at 4:03 PM ^
The absurd thing is how MSU (the university, not the team) has done nothing beyond instructing Mel Tucker to suspend the players. I'm pretty confident that had Michigan players been the assaulters, the university would have expelled them outright.
November 23rd, 2022 at 4:28 PM ^
If there are convictions this might give Sparty an out. Tuck comin doesn't get paid if he is fired for cause. Correct?

750.82 Felonious assault; violation of subsection (1) in weapon free school zone; definitions.
Sec. 82.
(1) Except as provided in subsection (2), a person who assaults another person with a gun, revolver, pistol, knife, iron bar, club, brass knuckles, or other dangerous weapon without intending to commit murder or to inflict great bodily harm less than murder is guilty of a felony punishable by imprisonment for not more than 4 years or a fine of not more than $2,000.00, or both.
(2) A person who violates subsection (1) in a weapon free school zone is guilty of a felony punishable by 1 or more of the following:
(a) Imprisonment for not more than 4 years.
(b) Community service for not more than 150 hours.
(c) A fine of not more than $6,000.00.

(c) "Weapon free school zone" means school property and a vehicle used by a school to transport students to or from school property.

The way I'm reading this is that university property isn't a weapon-free school zone, but baseline felonious assault still seems to fit.

Swinging a football helmet with intent to injure seems to fit the dangerous weapons portion of felonious assault.
November 23rd, 2022 at 2:26 PM ^
I agree, and I probably wasn't very clear. Section 1 seems to fit, but don't think Section 2 does, since it looks like the definition of "school" is K-12.

The civil suit that is going to follow is going to cast a much wider net and demand compensation that is 100s of times higher than what is in play in these criminal charges.
November 23rd, 2022 at 2:04 PM ^
Now it remains to be seen what Kevin Warren and the B1G say/do.
November 23rd, 2022 at 2:35 PM ^
You are looking at it.

BREAKING: B1G committee meeting on the issue
November 23rd, 2022 at 2:56 PM ^
Likely the same thing they did with the racial slurs hurled at the MSU hockey player by the OSU player: nothing.
November 23rd, 2022 at 3:14 PM ^
I’m hearing about this for the first time was it on video?
November 23rd, 2022 at 3:21 PM ^
Not caught on audio as far as I know, which I believe B1G used as its out. But the MSU player went public w/ his disappointment and it set off a sh*tstorm. OSU issued a late night apology and said the player "wasn't currently with the team."
November 23rd, 2022 at 6:38 PM ^
Swinging helmets and kicking feet may break my bones but words will hurt even more?
November 23rd, 2022 at 3:14 PM ^
They will do nothing and we’re never going to do anything. If charges were pressed they will say they are going to let the justice system handle it.
If no charges were pressed then that would have been there excuse for no punishment.
it is just another toothless organization that exists only to make money.
November 23rd, 2022 at 4:10 PM ^
At least the comishes kid is getting a free education..
November 23rd, 2022 at 4:16 PM ^
Well, if it's anything like the way they dealt with the racial slur hurled at an MSU hockey player by an OSU hockey player during a game, then.....nothing, unless their backs are absolutely against the wall and public outcry is so loud that they just can't ignore it.
November 23rd, 2022 at 2:04 PM ^
Good to see law enforcement moving so swiftly.
November 23rd, 2022 at 2:22 PM ^
NY - it's probably semantics, but I don't know if I'd use the word "swiftly". A better phrase, respectfully, IMO - would be "with deliberate speed". It doesn't seem like this process was rushed, nor were the actions delayed for any reason.
I'm glad they reached the conclusion they did, and certainly hope all of their evidence gathering was thorough and "by the book".
Let justice be served - with fairness to all involved.
November 23rd, 2022 at 4:05 PM ^
It felt like a long time waiting for a disposition that I initially though "swiftly" was sarcasm. But to be fair, a decision was reached—as you put it—with deliberate speed.
November 23rd, 2022 at 6:12 PM ^
Law enforcement have gone 180 degrees away from probable cause arrests and instead do what was done here and refer the netter to the prosecutor who can charge or not.
November 23rd, 2022 at 2:06 PM ^
Sigh. I just don't see how this helps anybody. Kick a few of these guys off the team, suspend the rest, and issue another formal apology. Putting a felony on these guys records just so some Michigan fans can be happy about retribution is such overkill. I hope they get dropped or get to misdemeanors that eventually expunge. No sense putting this matter into the terribly broken criminal "justice" system.
November 23rd, 2022 at 2:09 PM ^
Cool, how about I concuss your kid with a blunt object and see how you feel after that.
November 23rd, 2022 at 2:10 PM ^
Crump should have absolutely been charged. Beyond that, all those other kids have already served a three game suspension. That seems like more than enough consequences to me.
November 23rd, 2022 at 2:32 PM ^
Best take I read so far. Rational. My best guess is the misdemeanors get dropped and the felony is dropped to a misdemeanor
November 23rd, 2022 at 2:58 PM ^
Certainly the latter will be true. But the misdemeanors likely stick, in some form, even when pleaded down.
November 23rd, 2022 at 3:44 PM ^
Grown ass adult hyper physically capable athletes group assaulted another human being.
This is illegal, which is why they are being charged, if found guilty then they are literally a group of adults guilty of assaulting another human.
I think maybe you need to take this out of the context of football. This is a serious issue, people die in fist fights quite regularly, and also, every other bit of group assaulting someone isn't even remotely OK (at least in this context).
I'm a little saddened that you and multiple other people think being grounded from sports-ball for a few games is a just punishment for a group of adults assaulting someone over football.
November 23rd, 2022 at 5:22 PM ^
My thoughts exactly. If 7 people were charged for assaulting a person at a bar the punishment would not be this group of people arent allowed back to that bar for a month.
November 24th, 2022 at 4:17 AM ^
I don't think them being grounded from sports ball is enough, but the only reason the county may be looked at weird for pleading down is because a bunch of sports ball fans who have never paid attention that pleading down nearly always happens will be outraged that it happened this time. If you want them to be treated like it happened in a bar with non athletes, you are looking at it.
November 23rd, 2022 at 2:15 PM ^
Yeah. The justice system may have its issues, but just letting people get away with crimes isn't going to solve anything. There is an ingrained culture problem at MSU, plain and simple. That's the only way something like this happens. And culture problems don't get solved by a slap on the wrist...
November 23rd, 2022 at 2:10 PM ^
Could you go say that to the Green and McBurrow families?
November 23rd, 2022 at 2:16 PM ^
Why do people dismiss the severity of crimes because they occur during or near sports? If a group of guys jumped someone in an alley and started beating their head with a PVC pipe, does that just deserve a slap on the wrist?
November 23rd, 2022 at 2:16 PM ^
Bro, hitting an unhelmeted guy with your helmet is dangerous and a felony.
November 23rd, 2022 at 3:22 PM ^
Exactly, heck even Marty McSorley was charged after bashing Donald Brashear in the head with a stick, and that was during the game! While he was suspended for the season (and playoffs), he was also charged with assault with a weapon (Canadian court) , of course he only did 18 months of probation, but still.
After the conviction they extended his suspension for a full year, longest in NHL history for an on-ice incident. He never played in the NHL again.
Again, this incident happened on the ice during a game, using your equipment to inflict harm on another person after the game is different, and IMO much worse. The felony charge reflects it perfectly.
November 23rd, 2022 at 2:17 PM ^
Well this all might be reduced quite a bit, I will be surprised if anyone ends up with a felony. At least that’s how it seems to me. But more importantly, the one guy was beating the crap out of the other with his helmet. That’s a criminal Justice issue, regardless of anyone’s feelings. It would be the same way for players for other teams or people in a street fight. There are actual victims here, so it’s really not relevant how we feel about retribution.
November 23rd, 2022 at 2:17 PM ^
Law does not work to appease fans. What a horrible take. It is about justice. Or so I thought. This should stop this ever happening again.
I seriously those players learn from it and model citizens. Show the world how they can learn and make a difference.
Broken criminal justice system cannot be fixed if we do what you are suggesting.
November 23rd, 2022 at 2:24 PM ^
Sure it's messy and unfortunate but if you don't levy punishment that is significant enough, then there is no deterrence. Lets face it, players often are let off too easy. You can't have this kind of thing happening again, or it could be much worse next time.
