CC Idea: Promote Jay Harbaugh to OC

Submitted by Shakespeare on January 29th, 2024 at 11:14 AM

It sucks to lose great coaches like Herbert and Minter, and it really feels like for the guys who are on the fence about leaving the best way of keeping em is to offer a promotion. Jay Harbaugh would be a huge win if we’re able to hold onto him. He’s consistently been one of our best recruiters year in year out and has six years experience at Michigan as a position coach on the offensive side of the ball. He also worked as an offensive quality control coach for the Ravens. With Sherrone on the sideline he’ll have the support to develop on the job and I have no doubt he’d become one of the best young OC’s in college football. We need some retention wins and this would be a great one in my opinion. Curious what everyone’s thoughts are on the idea cause I haven’t seen this floated yet.

Promoting guys within to fill every major open position ( OC, DC , O line coach , S & C etc ) scares me. Not saying guys aren't capable just scares the hell out me.

There’s a balance. Guys have to come from somewhere. That’s how we got Moore where he is, the last two DCs rapidly bumped from Ravens staff positions, etc.

But promoting guys just to promote them isn’t the way. You have to ID the guys that have the strengths. Harbaugh did that with Moore - Moore moved up the org chart because he was good. Look at which guys that have been on the staff in the Harbaugh era that have and have not moved up.

We simply have to trust in coach Moore's work ethic and process to produce a quality staff and continued success for the program. Let's hope we never get the 'until proven otherwise' part.

Since Shakespeare (the OP) is sure to receive many negs, I offer a joke from Rodney Dangerfield instead:

When I went into show business I saw an ad in the paper. It said: "Improve Your Personalilty." So, I went to see the man.

He told me my personality was okay but my name was my problem.

I said to him, "My name? How could a name be a problem? Even William Shakespeare said, 'What's in a name?"

He said, "Who?"

I said, "William Shakespeare."

He said, "Look, do you want to listen to me or do you want to listen to your friends?"

I continue to find it odd that Jay hasn't spread his wings at all. By all accounts, the guy is a good coach, but you just don't truly know what he is because he's just never left his dad's shadow

Maybe he just likes working on his dad's staff and that's fine. It's just gonna limit where he can go as a coach if he never sets off on his own

I didn't downvote you because this idea isn't as bad as some others. As you said, with Moore still on the sidelines it probably does make an internal OC hire a better bet than an internal DC hire. That said, there are probably better internal OC candidates than Jay like Kirk Campbell.

His versatility with position groups. With every assignment he’s succeeded. His recruiting success has been better than both Campbell and Hart as well, he also has experience coordinating an entire phase of the game as our ST coordinator. I don’t really see any reason why anyone would say he’s less qualified than Hart or Campbell.

/resisting urge to make thread -- CC Idea:  Promote Jay Harbaugh to Athletic Director and FIRE WARDE

If I could find a way to work the Lions in there I'd have all my mgobases covered.

I'm just thankful that Jay has the Blog here to help. I doubt there was any conversation about this before Jim looked up from his breakfast and decided to go to the Chargers. Jay is fortunate to have us since there is no one in his inner circle who knows anything about football or coaching.

Nah,

I get the sentiment to keep the door open for Jim, but in my mind the door is always open for Jim and the entire Harbaugh family.

Should be Hart or Campbell, or have them as co-oc’s

I think we should be able to get established coordinators for both sides of the ball. We already have a first time HC, throw in coordinators who have never coordinated before and it could be disastrous.

I think we need some new blood in one of those coordinator positions.  I am not beholden to the "we need some veteran and outside presence" in those slots (look how that is working out on the MMB program),  but I do like the idea of repeating the trend of rising NFL experienced super star (ala McDonald and Minter) on both sides of the ball, or grabbing some SEC type folks for recruiting purposes.
