Cade… what have you gotten yourself into? Epic PSU-Iowa stats

Submitted by superstringer on September 24th, 2023 at 1:28 PM

Look at some of these nutso stats from the Iowa “game” (using that word euphemistically) last night:

**Iowa had the same number of turnovers as first downs (four)

**Penn State scored just two more points than Iowa had offensive plays (31 to 33)

**Penn State had more rushing attempts (57) than Iowa had passing yards (56)

**Iowa’s total rushing yards (20) were nearly matched on one rush by Penn State running back Nicholas Singleton (19 yard long)

**Iowa had six total fumbles (four lost)

**Penn State QB Drew Allar nearly had as many passing attempts (37) as Iowa QB Cade McNamara had passing yards

**Iowa posted a total of 20 rushing yards on 17 attempts (0.8 yards per attempt)

Brian Frerentz has turned a functional QB like Cade into hawkpoop.  Yeah I knkw they were down their beat TE and both RBs… but srsly. And now Brian is waaay behind his 25 pt/game threshold… if Daddy Kirk even lets him finish the year. Oh who are we kidding, he probably will get a job promotion this week for effort.

Btw… if this is not a new level of a “Rutger” then it should be.

One observation from watching last night.  In the 2nd half, especially once PSU scored to start the half, it appeared to me that the Iowa defense quit.

Iowa's lost some games by big scores before.  It happens.  But I've never, not even once, seen their defense sort of fold up shop.

Ferentz really has a mess to deal with.  The offense, everyone knows about that.  But if the defense starts to develop a "eh, what's even the point anymore?" attitude, things could spiral downhill fairly quickly.

One other observation: MSU @ Iowa is NBC's Prime Time Game next week!!!  Good God.

Like many posters, I don't have an issue with All and McNamara leaving to find playing time: its a short window and kids need to maximize that time.

How they left is what rubs many of us the wrong way, moreso with McNamara than All. Based on some of the stories, McNamara wasn't a particularly good team mate based on some of his alledged actions...

I appreciate his contributions to helping bring the program back, but at the same time, believe the program is much healthier without him in the building.

This. THIS IS THE WHOLE PROBLEM. Hey, dudes transfer out of the program. I wish those players well. They get the salute-blown kiss-choke back the tears gif. Unless they were bad teammates who shit on the program on the way out the door for issues that were really their own. They don't get the salute-blown kiss-choke back the tears gif. Sorry, Cade...

I can only wonder how frustrating it must be to play for Iowa’s defense. Because you actually have a good system and philosophy on that side of the ball, you’ve created good results, and all of your efforts are wasted by an offense that is completely inept and unwilling to evolve.

I feel like PSU is actually pretty good this year (still don’t trust a big game coached by Franklin) and Iowa is decent with no WRs.

Going to be a tough game later this year.

This is what cade looks like without all-world talent around him. I've been crucified for saying this since 2021.

His numbers since the UGA game: 57-110 (52%) 682 yards, 5 tds, 4 ints.

against non p5 teams: 40 - 74 (54%) 517 yards, 5 tds, 3 ints

The simple reality is that this is who Cade is...and why he is at Iowa. This was his decision-his choice-pretty much end of story. Cade was successful at Michigan because of the talent that surrounded him...and he was, mostly, able to stay out of the way of said talent.

I hope everyone got to see that throw Mahomes just made at about the 8 minute mark of the second quarter-holy cow!

I don't want to say a bunch of bad stuff about Cade, he was the QB for the 2021 Game. But stuff's come out that makes you uncomfortable and he made some comments that I hope he now regrets. He made a really bad decision on where to transfer and he's going to have to live with that bad choice.

Anyone who looked out on the sea of college football and thought entrusting your career to that senile old man and his worthless son was a good idea is a fool.

Iowa got a taste of their own turnover medicine. Had All not fumbled at the PSU 18 it would have been at least 3-0 Iowa early. Then another turnover on a punt return as well as a horrid missed call on a PSU 4th & 1 and that was ballgame. I thought Iowa would be able to only lose by something like 24-9, which would have won me a ton of money. Instead those things happened above and the game got out of hand, and I lost a lot of money.

I'm probably alone in this, but I still think Iowa will have a decent season/ probably win the West. No team that fumbles the ball 6 times is going to look good.

It was a bad day at the office for Iowa, but I'm not completely writing them off, and that game may be more of a testament to how good PSU is than an indictment of Iowa.

Iowa was playing decently through the first half or so, 2 key turnovers and the defense never getting off the field as a result were sort of where the dam broke.

That is the paradox. For the past several years, Kirk Ferentz has been able to use the "if isn't broken don't fix it defense". They got to the Big Ten championship ironically against Cade McNamara, and otherwise has posted solid positive records. Yes, they pad it with cupcakes like everyone else, but in a division with Northwestern, Minnesota and Purdue (all on the decline) and hard to know Illinois and Nebraska, they could with some lucky bounces win all or all but one of those games. Wisconsin looks like seriously bettter but that still keeps them in contention to the final weeks.

It is interesting that Charlie Jones aka Charlie Sizzle, decision to leave and go onto sucess at Purdue (and now the NFL) didn't lead to tidal wave of skill players leaving - especially receivers.

The portal should be interesting next year.

Harsh, from 247sports:

A broken clock is right twice a day, which would be an upgrade in comparison to the Iowa offense. Saturday's opportunity to quiet the rightful narrative surrounding Iowa's offense was destroyed with 11:09 remaining when Erick All fumbled inside the red zone. After that, if it were a boxing match, the bell would have sounded early in the second round. Iowa repeatedly was jabbed in the face with their hands down and refusing to punch back. A pacifist in a boxing ring.

During his opening statement, Ferentz mentioned that Iowa never got put in a position to put 'stress' on Penn State. When asked if he would change anything schematically, he responded with the following:

“We’re not going to create a new playbook, is that what you’re suggesting? I’m not a wholesale believer in changing just because you had a bad game. It was not a good game tonight. I think we made progress in three weeks. Tonight was disappointing. We played a really good football team. We’ll keep it in perspective. We’ll evaluate things over the course of 12 games. We’ve got eight to play. We’re not just going to start over again in any phase.”

KF is being a bit disingenous here though; its not just "a bad game". Their offensive struggles have existed all of last season too.

There's two issues: The playbook. The playcalling.

The schemes in the playbook might be fine. But there's a finesse to playcalling that isn't simply based off of the plays themselves - its intuitive and fluid with individual games. Its a chess match against the other coordinator. Pesonnel obviously makes a difference; good plalycalling is supposed to level that field.

Funny how quickly people are to characterize Cade as an average (at best) quarterback, who only did well because of the team around him.

I remember the jolt of energy he injected into the team when he replaced Joe Milton in that 2020 Rutgers game, in a season that had already turned disastrous, and the suggestion that Joe Milton (for instance) could have had the same success as Cade in 2021 is ... well, it's not one I agree with.

Nobody claims he's the best quarterback in the world. But just as he benefited from the team around him in 2021, the team also benefited from his particular set of skills. And we're doing him a serious injustice to dismiss him as, somehow, irrelevant to Michigan's success that year.

I'm glad JJ was able to take over last year, and I'm a big fan of our current quarterback. But you can like JJ and be grateful for what Cade was able to achieve.

And as for his conduct last year, yeah, that was unfortunate, but he's a young man who was disappointed and felt misused. He didn't handle it as well as he should have. No doubt. But it's good to know everyone here is so forgiving, and would never allow a young man's poor impulse management and PR skills to cloud the incredible significance of what we were able to achieve in 2021.

No idea why this was downvoted. Milton was unplayable and dug us a huge hole, and it was Cade that saved us from the embarrassment of losing to Rutgers after losing to the 2nd shittiest sparty team I've ever seen (we all know what team #1 is) and getting clowned on by Indiana (wow).

Yes, his attitude towards JJ was disgusting now that we know the truth. No, he doesn't hold a candle to JJ. I'm still grateful for what he accomplished here.
