Cade… what have you gotten yourself into? Epic PSU-Iowa stats
Look at some of these nutso stats from the Iowa “game” (using that word euphemistically) last night:
**Iowa had the same number of turnovers as first downs (four)
**Penn State scored just two more points than Iowa had offensive plays (31 to 33)
**Penn State had more rushing attempts (57) than Iowa had passing yards (56)
**Iowa’s total rushing yards (20) were nearly matched on one rush by Penn State running back Nicholas Singleton (19 yard long)
**Iowa had six total fumbles (four lost)
**Penn State QB Drew Allar nearly had as many passing attempts (37) as Iowa QB Cade McNamara had passing yards
**Iowa posted a total of 20 rushing yards on 17 attempts (0.8 yards per attempt)
Brian Frerentz has turned a functional QB like Cade into hawkpoop. Yeah I knkw they were down their beat TE and both RBs… but srsly. And now Brian is waaay behind his 25 pt/game threshold… if Daddy Kirk even lets him finish the year. Oh who are we kidding, he probably will get a job promotion this week for effort.
Btw… if this is not a new level of a “Rutger” then it should be.

I also believe Cade is not healthy at all. If you notice he can’t get the ball downfield and moves like an old man in the pocket. He was never quick or fast but he has never been the same after he got hurt early last season.
September 24th, 2023 at 1:31 PM ^
I know time of possession doesn't always tell the whole story, but PSU had the edge yesterday by 45:27-14:33, which is just insane.
September 24th, 2023 at 2:03 PM ^
In this case, it is a symptom of the story.
September 24th, 2023 at 2:35 PM ^
Also, the Iowa punter had 366 yards punting. A decisive win in some circles of Iowa fans.
September 24th, 2023 at 3:15 PM ^
Now THAT is a stat representing utter futility.
September 24th, 2023 at 4:41 PM ^
Iowa fans: "We won the field position battle! That's more important than merely winning the game!"
September 24th, 2023 at 4:51 PM ^
In case you're wondering (as I was), the all-time record for punting yards in a single game is 1,318 by a player for Texas Tech in 1939.
Here's a story about that game:
September 24th, 2023 at 8:59 PM ^
I have a feeling Kirk Ferentz watches videos of that game when he's alone at night.
September 24th, 2023 at 3:15 PM ^
It’s almost impossible to believe this, but it was actually WORSE than the final time of possession indicates. Halfway through the 4th quarter it was 41:31-11:47. I took a picture of the TV screen at that point because of just how outlandish the stats were and I’m so glad I did.
September 24th, 2023 at 3:50 PM ^
Wait a Got damn minute… 31 total offensive plays!? Considering they scored 0 points and if they went 4 & out (with punts counting as plays as well) on each possession, that would equate to a little under 8 possessions (7.75 to be exact).
Astonishing.
September 24th, 2023 at 9:17 PM ^
4 turnovers will do that to you.
September 24th, 2023 at 1:32 PM ^
That division is trash.
September 24th, 2023 at 1:37 PM ^
Iowa vs staee will be must watch TV...
/S🤣🤣🤣
September 24th, 2023 at 1:45 PM ^
I may tune in just to see which inept team is worse!
September 24th, 2023 at 4:51 PM ^
State will relish win #3.
September 24th, 2023 at 8:03 PM ^
Hard to say when that will happen....
September 24th, 2023 at 1:48 PM ^
Oh my god that's next week! Sickos game of the week?
September 24th, 2023 at 2:49 PM ^
Correction, neighbor:
Must-nap TV
September 24th, 2023 at 2:47 PM ^
Meanwhile, the other side is as strong or stronger than any division...maybe ever.
September 24th, 2023 at 1:33 PM ^
Sheesh. Can't wait for "Iowatch" this week.
Cade could be getting solid reps clipboarding. All would be a solid part of our offense.
Choose your own adventure. Not the path I would have picked...
September 24th, 2023 at 1:38 PM ^
I get that these guys all think they're the next Brady, but it seems to me that if Cade had stuck around Ann Arbor as a long term backup, he'd be setting himself up for an awesome coaching career as an understudy to Campbell and Moore. No one is going to want a former Brian Ferentz QB as an analyst or coach though.
Edit to add: and with the Harbaugh connection he could have been an analyst for the Ravens immediately after graduation. He seems like he has the brain of a great QB, just missing the physical tools of a guy like JJ. That should be a recipe for a long and successful coaching career. Instead he's sinking on the SS Brian.
September 24th, 2023 at 2:06 PM ^
He could grow into a good leader but he’ll need to mature. His behavior at um during the qb competition and sense of entitlement wouldn’t work well as a coach, grad assistant or any other position on a staff.
he’s young though and I’m sure he will learn from it.
September 24th, 2023 at 3:20 PM ^
This is spot on. The video of him cracking up like a 15 year old boy at his misspeak in that press conference is one of the most cringey things I’ve seen in a while and speaks to this point.
September 24th, 2023 at 10:12 PM ^
I missed this. What press conference?
September 25th, 2023 at 7:12 AM ^
I’m going to pass on describing it, but I think the best way would be to just find it. Just Google McNamara + press conference + sex joke.
September 25th, 2023 at 6:34 PM ^
Good lord. No one would've gotten a sexual dimension to that remark if he hadn't start giggling.
September 24th, 2023 at 2:18 PM ^
He wouldve been better off trying to light it up at the G5 or FCS level to try to trick an NFL team into drafting him late. Now he's just stuck in Iowa City and he'll be selling insurance in 2 years
September 24th, 2023 at 2:54 PM ^
I've suggested here before that a return home to Reno and the University of Nevada (which, it seems, could probably use him this year) would've made some sense.
Aside, I can see a more grown-up version of Cade succeeding in the coaching world. He seems intelligent and charismatic.
September 24th, 2023 at 5:57 PM ^
Would you buy insurance from Cade?
September 25th, 2023 at 12:45 AM ^
I’d buy insurance FOR Cade.
September 24th, 2023 at 2:57 PM ^
Even as a backup, NFL scouts have no problem finding good talent hidden on the bench behind a great player. No reason he couldn't have been a later round pick after backing up JJ for a couple years. Instead, he's going to take a lot of concussions behind that joke of an o-line and he'll be a worse quarterback on his way out than when he transferred there.
September 24th, 2023 at 6:27 PM ^
I’m not a McNamara fan, but why would anyone fault him for not wanting to sit out the rest of his college eligibility at Michigan when he could play somewhere else?
September 24th, 2023 at 1:50 PM ^
Cade won us a conference title. He deserves to start somewhere. He just happened to pick the absolute worst school to start for. In theory, it looked like a good decision at the time. I imagine his thinking was all Iowa needed was a serviceable QB and their offense would look a lot different.
This proves even further that this is almost entirely a schematic issue and Brian has no business in division 1 football. I'm not even sure he could scheme a serviceable offense on a high school team.
September 24th, 2023 at 1:55 PM ^
Did he think Iowa was going to grow a functional OL from a cornstalk? That's the real problem. They can't run because they have no OL, and they can't keep Cade vertical long enough for him to pass to his potential. I just don't understand what kind of magical thinking you'd need to convince yourself that trash OL was just going to work itself out.
September 24th, 2023 at 2:10 PM ^
That's a fair point. I think he saw the opportunity to start for a major program and took it, terrible o-line notwithstanding. Watching a team with that horrid of an offensive line makes me so grateful for what we have. The rich rod and Hoke eras gave me o-line PTSD
September 24th, 2023 at 2:12 PM ^
The skill position players are several notches below what he was used to at umich. That would make it tough to compete and perform at the same level.
September 24th, 2023 at 2:09 PM ^
Cade in 2021 was the living definition of a game manager. He had one 300-yard game (a loss), and just four 200-yard games out of 14. Every week we pulled him at least one series to get JJ's talents on the field. In hindsight it's clear that he was keeping the seat warm and I think other programs recognized this. I never thought going to play for Brian Ferentz made a lot of sense, but it may have been the best he could do.
September 24th, 2023 at 2:59 PM ^
You say that like being a game manager is a bad thing. There's quite a few game managers starting in the NFL, and sometimes they win super bowls with a great team around them.
Fact is, he was a very good quarterback who got benched by a great quarterback - no shame in that, even if he made a big mistake transferring to Iowa.
September 24th, 2023 at 3:14 PM ^
Fact is, he was a very good quarterback
That's not a fact. It's your opinion.
When your starter is pulled every week so the freshman backup can see the field (on a team in national title contention, no less), that tells you something.
September 24th, 2023 at 6:29 PM ^
Fact is, he’s proving he isn’t a “very good quarterback.” He was a serviceable QB on a very good team.
September 24th, 2023 at 3:17 PM ^
Thank you! Cade had the o-line, the WR corps, pass-catching tight ends, and a back who flexes out and makes catches at Michigan...and he produced weak numbers. Why would anyone think he could go to a program lacking those things and thrive? He just doesn't have the talent to carry an offense. Successful game-manager in a stacked offense that doesn't require anything more from its quarterback is Cade's ceiling.
McNamara doesn't have the arm strength to hit deep balls, nor does he have the accuracy to hit tight windows on short routes. One of the joys of watching McCarthy is his ability to hit receivers in stride allowing them to pile up yards after catch. McNamara's inability to do that drove me insane. How many times did a UFR note a missed open receiver because of his propensity for checking down? Mobility would negate some of those flaws, but, nope, he's a statue back there.
Then there's the shit attitude, the belief that he should be handed the job, that he shouldn't have to compete for it, then acting like an entitled brat when he lost that competition. He checked out mentally when he lost the starting job then physically after his injury. I have no sympathy, and I have no well-wishes to offer the kid. McNamara chose Iowa because the competition was weak and they probably told him he wouldn't have to compete for the starting job where other programs wouldn't make that guarantee. He made that bed.
September 24th, 2023 at 2:14 PM ^
I disagree with your first sentence. Case was part of the team that won a conference title. He p*ssed away any good will I had for him when he disappeared from the team after being replaced as starter. If he’d been active in helping the team from the sidelines as Ronnie Bell was I’d have respected him. His inflated sense of his skill set and his sense of entitlement was appalling.
September 24th, 2023 at 2:19 PM ^
Cade won us a conference title. He deserves to start somewhere.
Thats not how this works. Thats not how any of this works
September 24th, 2023 at 2:28 PM ^
It does in the NIL era.
September 24th, 2023 at 5:54 PM ^
NIL and performance generally go hand-in-hand.
September 24th, 2023 at 2:36 PM ^
Cade won us a conference title. He deserves to start somewhere.
He's not owed anything by other schools just because he was QB for M's first title run. If he'd stayed at M, he could've cashed that in for an entry point into coaching, as another poster pointed out. No one else owes him anything.
September 24th, 2023 at 3:06 PM ^
Nobody's saying "owed." But the question is, is he unreasonable in believing he's demonstrated an ability to lead a team to a winning season? No.
I like Cade, and I think he's a damned good quarterback. Let's not start shitting on the guy, just because he wants to play football, not carry a clipboard.
September 24th, 2023 at 3:34 PM ^
What has Cade McNamara done to show you that he's "a damned good quarterback"? Is it the one 300 yard game he had? The high school championship? Iowa's offense isn't terrible in spite of McNamara. It's bad because McNamara is no better than Petras. If Petras quarterbacked the 2021 Michigan team they could've won the B1G despite him too. Because Hassan Haskins, Blake Corum and that defense would still have existed.
September 24th, 2023 at 5:56 PM ^
Ha ha ha. Did you watch Petras for the whole season?
