Cade… what have you gotten yourself into? Epic PSU-Iowa stats

Submitted by superstringer on September 24th, 2023 at 1:28 PM

Look at some of these nutso stats from the Iowa “game” (using that word euphemistically) last night:

**Iowa had the same number of turnovers as first downs (four)

**Penn State scored just two more points than Iowa had offensive plays (31 to 33)

**Penn State had more rushing attempts (57) than Iowa had passing yards (56)

**Iowa’s total rushing yards (20) were nearly matched on one rush by Penn State running back Nicholas Singleton (19 yard long)

**Iowa had six total fumbles (four lost)

**Penn State QB Drew Allar nearly had as many passing attempts (37) as Iowa QB Cade McNamara had passing yards

**Iowa posted a total of 20 rushing yards on 17 attempts (0.8 yards per attempt)

Brian Frerentz has turned a functional QB like Cade into hawkpoop.  Yeah I knkw they were down their beat TE and both RBs… but srsly. And now Brian is waaay behind his 25 pt/game threshold… if Daddy Kirk even lets him finish the year. Oh who are we kidding, he probably will get a job promotion this week for effort.

Btw… if this is not a new level of a “Rutger” then it should be.

Sheesh. Can't wait for "Iowatch" this week.

Cade could be getting solid reps clipboarding. All would be a solid part of our offense.

Choose your own adventure. Not the path I would have picked...

I get that these guys all think they're the next Brady, but it seems to me that if Cade had stuck around Ann Arbor as a long term backup, he'd be setting himself up for an awesome coaching career as an understudy to Campbell and Moore. No one is going to want a former Brian Ferentz QB as an analyst or coach though.

Edit to add: and with the Harbaugh connection he could have been an analyst for the Ravens immediately after graduation. He seems like he has the brain of a great QB, just missing the physical tools of a guy like JJ. That should be a recipe for a long and successful coaching career. Instead he's sinking on the SS Brian.

Even as a backup, NFL scouts have no problem finding good talent hidden on the bench behind a great player.  No reason he couldn't have been a later round pick after backing up JJ for a couple years.  Instead, he's going to take a lot of concussions behind that joke of an o-line and he'll be a worse quarterback on his way out than when he transferred there.

Cade won us a conference title. He deserves to start somewhere. He just happened to pick the absolute worst school to start for. In theory, it looked like a good decision at the time. I imagine his thinking was all Iowa needed was a serviceable QB and their offense would look a lot different.

This proves even further that this is almost entirely a schematic issue and Brian has no business in division 1 football. I'm not even sure he could scheme a serviceable offense on a high school team.

Did he think Iowa was going to grow a functional OL from a cornstalk? That's the real problem. They can't run because they have no OL, and they can't keep Cade vertical long enough for him to pass to his potential. I just don't understand what kind of magical thinking you'd need to convince yourself that trash OL was just going to work itself out.

Cade in 2021 was the living definition of a game manager.  He had one 300-yard game (a loss), and just four 200-yard games out of 14.  Every week we pulled him at least one series to get JJ's talents on the field.   In hindsight it's clear that he was keeping the seat warm and I think other programs recognized this.  I never thought going to play for Brian Ferentz made a lot of sense, but it may have been the best he could do.

You say that like being a game manager is a bad thing.  There's quite a few game managers starting in the NFL, and sometimes they win super bowls with a great team around them.

Fact is, he was a very good quarterback who got benched by a great quarterback - no shame in that, even if he made a big mistake transferring to Iowa.

Thank you! Cade had the o-line, the WR corps, pass-catching tight ends, and a back who flexes out and makes catches at Michigan...and he produced weak numbers. Why would anyone think he could go to a program lacking those things and thrive? He just doesn't have the talent to carry an offense. Successful game-manager in a stacked offense that doesn't require anything more from its quarterback is Cade's ceiling.

McNamara doesn't have the arm strength to hit deep balls, nor does he have the accuracy to hit tight windows on short routes. One of the joys of watching McCarthy is his ability to hit receivers in stride allowing them to pile up yards after catch. McNamara's inability to do that drove me insane. How many times did a UFR note a missed open receiver because of his propensity for checking down? Mobility would negate some of those flaws, but, nope, he's a statue back there.

Then there's the shit attitude, the belief that he should be handed the job, that he shouldn't have to compete for it, then acting like an entitled brat when he lost that competition. He checked out mentally when he lost the starting job then physically after his injury. I have no sympathy, and I have no well-wishes to offer the kid. McNamara chose Iowa because the competition was weak and they probably told him he wouldn't have to compete for the starting job where other programs wouldn't make that guarantee. He made that bed.

I disagree with your first sentence. Case was part of the team that won a conference title. He p*ssed away any good will I had for him when he disappeared from the team after being replaced as starter. If he’d been active in helping the team from the sidelines as Ronnie Bell was I’d have respected him. His inflated sense of his skill set and his sense of entitlement was appalling.

What has Cade McNamara done to show you that he's "a damned good quarterback"? Is it the one 300 yard game he had? The high school championship? Iowa's offense isn't terrible in spite of McNamara. It's bad because McNamara is no better than Petras. If Petras quarterbacked the 2021 Michigan team they could've won the B1G despite him too. Because Hassan Haskins, Blake Corum and that defense would still have existed.
