Buckle Up

It looks like a commitment is on the horizon. @thee_Matty_D posted on twitter about 10 minutes ago

It is looking like complaining about 2019 recruiting is going the way of 2018; just earlier in the cycle. Most dont think we have a top 100 recruit. We got a couple of good arguements early, and will probaby have another one, but after that there were not too many bright posts. Filling Hello posts with comments in the 500-1000 range doesnt make me optomistic about our chances with having an enjoyable summer eiether. Its disappointing that we make up our minds on guys' entire careers 10 months before signing day. Worse, its is at probably our biggest area of need, and biggest weaness, but we still complain about getting commits from OT . These are the type of posts I have come to expect whenever I come here.

...it is NOT an indicator of future success....(of the team he signs with). As many teams with multiple top 10 recruiting classes have tanked.

It IS an indicator of how much these recruits have the size, speed and athleticism that is going to get themk drafted no matter what college they attend.

On the the other hand, you probably have more than a 5x better chance to win the championship when your blue chip ratio is over 60% as oppossed to under 50%.

a population rather than a recruit. If someone wants to start a thread about the class and it’s lack of probability to win a championship, then let’s do it. Star rankings are essentially irrelevant to to one recruit because there is so much variability. Over a set of recruits, the rankings matter because the “average” is higher and the risk/variance is mostly eliminated.

I actually don't ever expect anyone to go to OSU, not even if they grew up in columbus and their whole family went there, because once you visit anywhere else, life just opens up, and you realize that the sun and sky are maize and blue, and not whatever grey or scarlett color off of the back side of your local columbus strip mall.

The high school football stinks and if the kid isn’t elite then it’s a waste of a scholarship.

You know, over the years, I've noticed that we usually get good commitment news when I am working the longer hours of storms around here, so I will do my best to stay on duty this week.

I do enjoy a good "Hello" post to brighten up the rather drab stretches of the OT season.

Yes.  As in "people who only look at how many recruiting stars a new commit has, tend to shit all over any player who isn't a four star or better after the commit, and question the intelligence of the coach staff who would dare to take anyone outside the top 100". They're...kinda common around here.

99% of the people on the blog agree that ratings for a class are important to the success of a team.  "Star gazers" think that Michigan should only recruit guys that are above a certain ranking.

Which is ridiculous because if the analysts were so good that they rarely missed on players (in both directions) - they would be on a P5 staff making a million dollars a year vs. working for Rivals at a fraction of that.

Everyone misses on players, including our coach, and even the NFL who spends millions of dollars and a significant amount of resources vetting NFL draft picks every year. I tend to look at things in the macro sense. Are recruiting rankings accurate? The answer to that question is unequivocally yes. I don't fault people for putting a lot of stock into them when the programs at the top of the rankings every year are the same ones in the CFP.

Like you mentioned, it's over time. Plenty of people freak out about Michigan's 2018 class. Yes, I wish they could have landed a couple bigger names. As long as 2018 is the outlier, Michigan will be just fine. so many folks act like it was a class completely void of talent. That class has plenty of talent. The previous 2 classes were loaded. The 2019 class if off to a very nice start. When you look at the 4 year period, Michigan has done very well. No single recruit can make or break a program (maybe a truly elite QB).

For me last years class was more about who they didn't get than who they did. Otis Reese, Emil Ekiyor, Nicholas Petit Frere, Eyabi Anoma, Josh Jobe, etc were all guys UM was in prime position for and failed to sign. There have been way too many misses and it looks like that has started to carry over to this class. Lot of time left of course so I'm going to withold judgement until NSD.

I do not think it is a trend. I am not an expert at all. I did watch this kids video and it looks impressive. He seemed to have quick feet and mauled his assignment. Now, I don't think it is the highest level of football. My gut tells me that this kid is going to move up the rankings significantly.
