Broncos interviewing Harbaugh (and Payton) this week

Looks like the Payton thing could be a trade scenario

A recipe for a tidal wave of portal exits. You do understand losing the coach is a no-win outcome. It's all negativity from pr, recruiting and team departure standpoint. This program we have now will not be the same for years if this happens. Just keep that in mind.
I think the coach is pretty disillusioned at this point, suffering while he's at the top of his coaching game at Michigan. I don't think he really wants to leave in spite of all the NFL waffling. If that were true, he would already be gone.
The Panthers job is the best of the current NFL openings depending who gets fired or quits later today or tomorrow. Carolina has a decent young roster, two league-hardened qbs and a forgiving sports market without a probing press. You can put your stamp on this team fairly quickly and get it to the playoffs.
Frustration with a contract situation and reaction to outside regulation, ought not be the driving influences in the outcome of this challenge for Harbaugh's future services. There needs to be a sit-down to iron it out and negotiate a deal everyone can live with at Michigan because that's where he ultimately belongs.
Winning at the college and pro level are two different grinds. And Harbaugh is the only coach in America who has successfully worked both of them which is why he remains in demand by the NFL. This won't change until the school decides keeping Harbaugh is more important to it than having him leave. Michigan deserves to know what his coaching desires and choices are.
But understand, this school doesn't do coaching changes well unless it has a no-brainer choice, which Harbaugh is.

Pete Carroll says hi.

" And Harbaugh is the only coach in America who has successfully worked both of them"
Huh?
Pete Carroll - 3 national championships and a Super Bowl win
Jimmy Johnson - National Championship and two Super Bowl wins

I said it this week when this first came out. Ono needs to grab warde and walk to Harbaugh's office with the biggest contract in college football with a $100,000,000 buyout in one hand and a resignation letter in the other and make him choose, then and there. If he wants the NFL, I wish him nothing but the best of luck. But we can't do this anymore.
January 8th, 2023 at 12:01 PM ^
He doesn’t deserve the biggest contract in college football. A big contract yes, the biggest? No justification for that.
January 8th, 2023 at 10:18 AM ^
Yeah, I mean we can probably go get Matt Campbell. Cheaper now that he won like 2 games this year.

Sure, fire Harbaugh and bring in the next Richrod. Or maybe the next Brady Hoke is available? Remember all the years Alabama floundered with Shula’s kid et al.? Mack Brown didn’t win enough Texas, and they have sucked since they fired him. ND had Gerry Faust. Finding a great coach isn’t like snapping your fingers. If we can keep Harbaugh, we should keep him—although this NFL flirtation cannot become a yearly thing. He needs to accept that if he wants to stay.
January 8th, 2023 at 12:07 PM ^
ND had Gerry Faust.
Correction. ND had Faust, Wise and Willingham. : ) Now granted, they got it right with Kelly and Holtz. But, yeah, about 100 years of data tells us that hiring the right football coach for a major program can be hard.
January 8th, 2023 at 5:56 PM ^
And even Kelly and Holtz, the 1st and 3rd winningest ND coaches, left in a huff and an acrimonious separation. A bit off topic here, but it absolutely throws me that to the average ND fan, Kelly's piled up wins still did not make up for his personality
January 8th, 2023 at 11:17 AM ^
I would offer him some kind of monster contract, 10 years 150M or something, with a $50M release clause. If an NFL team wants him, they have to pay Michigan 50M to take him.
January 8th, 2023 at 12:03 PM ^
You think he deserves $2-3 million more per year than Saban? No.
January 8th, 2023 at 8:42 PM ^
i could make the argument that he’s worth $2-3,000,000 more to us than saban is to alabama…
who’s worse off if both leave?
January 8th, 2023 at 12:11 PM ^
Problem is…Jim wouldn’t sign a deal like that. He loses all his leverage in a scenario like that.
January 8th, 2023 at 8:41 PM ^
on one side of the scale: leverage
on the other side of the scale: $150,000,000
choose wisely
January 8th, 2023 at 11:39 AM ^
It's unpopular because it's a bad idea
January 8th, 2023 at 12:09 PM ^
What would firing him get you?
January 8th, 2023 at 2:11 PM ^
Clarity
January 8th, 2023 at 12:11 PM ^
What a horrible look. Offer the contract that would end this happening yearly going forward and let him sign or not. If you dont trust a 25-3 coach to over come top 15 recruiting classes you shouldnt be in that position.
January 8th, 2023 at 3:32 PM ^
This is the most brain dead take there is to be clear.
Would you rather have a coach the NFL doesn't want. Ryan Day? For instance.
January 8th, 2023 at 10:43 PM ^
I'll take Ryan Day. The guy is a great offensive coach and recruiter. Plus he lives on 3rd base which is where he are currently stranded on. So we get get home together
January 8th, 2023 at 10:03 AM ^
Had JH not promised WM last year that this NFL dalliance was not going to continue, had he not said pretty unequivocally just one month ago that he would be back in 2023, had he not put out a wishy-washy statement that nevertheless ended with "those who stay will be champions", then I might agree with this given what he has accomplished. However, given that all of those things did happen, and literally within 72 hours of posting a message that ended with a giant "those who stay will be champions" it's now come out that he's interviewing with NFL teams again, then maybe it's time for WM to start coming up with contingency plans instead of waiting for this soap opera to play out and then react.
January 8th, 2023 at 9:07 AM ^
"...his love of a challenge..."
You mean like the challenge of actually winning a National Championship?
January 8th, 2023 at 9:21 AM ^
He is not going to win a national championship here, especially with the NFL interviews happening each year.
January 8th, 2023 at 10:12 AM ^
Ditto Super Bowl. I'm not predicting either way, just saying what Harbaugh views as his best fit is anyone's guess.
January 8th, 2023 at 10:58 AM ^
I'm tired
January 8th, 2023 at 9:04 AM ^
Kind of like how he came into shitty team in SF. It took him several years to do anything with that roster.
January 8th, 2023 at 9:13 AM ^
This is revisionist history. That team he took over had a lot of talent. His biggest challenge was QB, but they had Frank Gore, Vernon Davis, a good OL, and talent on the defense. Singletary was an awful coach.
January 8th, 2023 at 9:31 AM ^
Yea, it's revisionist because Harbaugh did the revising. All NFL teams have talent that bad coaches don't use right. Harbaugh is exactly the kind of coach to resurrect a fading veteran QB.
January 8th, 2023 at 10:37 AM ^
He did not inherit a crappy team, and it did not take several years to turn around. The team went 13 -3 his first year as head coach in San Fran.
January 8th, 2023 at 9:16 AM ^
I was speaking only in terms of the professional situations.
January 8th, 2023 at 11:26 AM ^
Doug Pederson thinks maybe you dk what you're talking about.
January 8th, 2023 at 7:25 AM ^
No QB, average OLine, and a meddling owner...I think Jim loves Indy because of their history but I don't think he's really really considering going there.
January 8th, 2023 at 8:26 AM ^
Also the worst uniforms in professional football.
January 8th, 2023 at 3:04 PM ^
Wait, who has the Worst uniforms in the NFL? On mobile I can't tell what this is a reply to, but it better not be the Colts! That blue and white and the horseshoe logo are 🔥🔥
January 8th, 2023 at 6:38 PM ^
colts uni's are solid, somewhat iconic, though i'd stop short of 'fire'.
as to worst, see jax's all teal, they hurt my eyes. and a lot of the alt uni's for other teams aren't so hot, either.
January 8th, 2023 at 9:23 AM ^
Just like he is going to stay at Michigan for as long as Michigan will have him, right? I think he DEFINITELY is considering going there. I think he is considering any NFL team that will have him.
January 8th, 2023 at 7:45 AM ^
Carolina is the closest to winning, good young roster and lots of picks, as well as winnable division right away.
January 8th, 2023 at 8:17 AM ^
The Rams could be his best option if McVay decides to step away.
January 8th, 2023 at 8:56 AM ^
The Rams are in financial hell due to over spending with no draft capital. Just like with Denver only a fool would take either job
January 8th, 2023 at 8:57 AM ^
I can see the Rams just so Jim could stick it to the Niners
January 8th, 2023 at 9:07 AM ^
His problem wasn't with the 49ers per se, it was with Trent Baalke the GM of the 49ers.
January 8th, 2023 at 12:56 PM ^
Trent Baalke is the Jaguars GM. If he takes the Colts job, he could grab one of the good-enough starting QBs and block him from repeating as AFC South champs.
January 8th, 2023 at 3:01 PM ^
The Rams have more draft capital than Denver plus a significantly better roster when healthy.
January 8th, 2023 at 10:47 AM ^
The Rams fucking suck lol.
They have maybe 1 year left of Stafford and like no first round draft picks for next 50 years.
Honestly feel bad for Cooper Kupp.
January 8th, 2023 at 11:34 AM ^
That being said, I'm cheering HARD for the Rams today.
January 8th, 2023 at 1:38 PM ^
Tough call on this. The Lions have the Rams 1st round pick. Is it worth dropping 4 spots for a 7th seed in the playoffs? Sorry, for a chance at a 7th seed (still have to beat Green Bay).
January 8th, 2023 at 12:53 PM ^
Rams are definitely not, they’d be one of the worst!
January 8th, 2023 at 8:30 AM ^
I think Harbaugh would want nothing to do with Jim Irsay, but who knows.
January 8th, 2023 at 2:34 PM ^
Agree. They have the 5th pick, so can draft one of the top available QBs. Stroud is usually projected to go in that spot. It’s not a popular opinion here, but I think he’s going to be good. Excellent accuracy and at the end of the season he started to use his legs effectively.
